Although now that I'm thinking aloud, I'm wondering if the shrinkflation is not to avoid increasing booking fees, but rather to try to get one shift of security for most stages vs two.
I mean, they're theoretically losing out on revenue from food and drink sales by shutting most of the fest down at 11pm. I don't think skipping a couple shifts of security is enough to offset that, but skipping 2-3 bookings probably is.
What if we end up checking Lana out and have life changing experiences and it’s the best set of the week…
But anyways why wouldn’t they use the new stage or Sahara given how far away those stages are from main
The Gobi, Mojave, and Sonora are also plenty far away. Besides which, they had King Gizz going during Harry Styles on the Outdoor a couple years ago, so I don't know how much they care about sound bleed. (and before y'all get in with "yeah, and it was a ghost town" -- A) the Outdoor was always way too big for them in that scenario and that's exactly a spot where they should've been in the Gobi, B) Harry Styles was the closest thing to a major rock act that year and sticking King Gizz against him was a stupid move regardless, and C) for whatever reason they decided to have FIVE STAGES running against their most exclusive headliner, so of course some acts were a ghost town. That's a perfect example of GV doing the counter-programming poorly, then evidently deciding "well, guess we should never counter-program again").
We've already mentioned Jamiroquai vs The Weeknd and New Order vs Kendrick, but to add some other past counter-programming that worked: Grimes/Zhu/RL Grime vs GNR in 2016; multiple acts vs Jack White 2015 (or if you want to think of The Weeknd as the headliner, Ratatat packed the Sahara against him that year, and it seemed like Kaytanada and Kygo did well against Drake, though I was long gone); Nas and Skrillex vs Muse in 2014 (I'm sure Duck Sauce did well against Arcade Fire that year too).
And again, if there's any headliner who should have counter-programming, it's Lana, both because of the style of music and the fact that it's Friday. She is absolutely not the sort of act they should be shutting down the rest of the festival for, and if she demanded that, they shouldn't have booked her, or they should have booked her for Sunday at least.
They need like 10 guards at Sonora barely. 3 for the entrance, 1 for the 2 emergency exits, one for bar entry and one for bar exit and then the ones by the stage. It aint much at all.

This is the first that I have started to even worry about LDR and when she is playing, but not because I want to see here. I don't want that to be my only option. TBH I haven't gave a single shit about any of the headliners this year. Paying this much damn money to come all the way from Indiana just to have nothing to watch after 11 is some BS. So at this point I will be in the Yuma no matter who is playing from the sound of it.
Okay I'll say it: it's time for a Coachella cum leak, even if its just a dribble. GV can only give us blue balls so many times before someone blows a load so messy that it scrambles the lineup placements.
Maybe cause this is my 20th year and I am extra pissed off at whats been going down and just want it to be really fucking good.
Like Glastonbury purposefully puts stage headliners all against each other ( with some slight stagger ) so you essentially have to make a choice due to proximity of stages. They never shy away from having great acts go against each other. Like Sunday in 2022. You had Kendrick vs Charli, Pet Shop Boys, Suzanne Vega, Bicep and Courtney Barnett. Everyone had crowds because hello, PEOPLE LIKE OPTIONS.
I've said it before and others have as well, but Sunday '17 with Kendrick vs Justice vs New Order, and everybody had a great crowd. That's how you end a weekend.
You also had Tale Of Us in Yuma which was fantastic and had a solid crowd.

these people need to listen to NFR and get some culture
to be the Gen Z gay in Lana's corner rn. Having caught her last SoCal show all the way back in 2019, she was in very fine form even then. I was a much more casual fan then and she was pulling me in even from all the way in the back. That has been the one and only performance of "hope is a dangerous thing-" and how lucky we were. I am banking on Lana bringing all her friends and it being a lovefest. When Lana gets comfy she really soars. "Kintsugi" prayer circle begins now.

I think all of that is fine and I don't THINK anyone is hating on her abilities to put on a good performance- I certainly am not... It is just that she isn't worthy of shutting down the rest of the festival. Give us options.

I have zero issues with Lana headlining Coachella and I respect her talent. I just have an issue with no real counter programming against headliners to begin with, and especially on Friday night when everybody just wants to let loose and go wild, and especially on Friday night against an artist that to my admittedly limited knowledge has no upbeat songs at all. The last time we had a super mellow Friday headliner was Radiohead, who are even more critically acclaimed than Lana, and GV did an amazing job that night. Curated the entire main stage for Radiohead's vibes with Father John Misty --> The XX --> Radiohead which is a great run, but then also stacked the tents with party acts during Radiohead like Dillon Francis, Empire of the Sun, Denzel Curry, Capital Cities, Sam Gellaitry for those who wanted to end the night on an upbeat note.

Yes. She closed with ‘Hope is a Dangerous Thing’ at All Things go last year and it was amazing
I just have one request: if you’re gonna shut down the fields for a headliner MAKE SURE THEY START ON TIME. I’ll never forget Sunday W1 2022 when they shut everything down (temporarily) for SHM then everyone was forced to stand around like fools waiting for them start a half hour late. What redeemed that crap behavior was the Blessed Madonna b2b Honey Dijon starting up in the Mojave as counter programming 20mins after the scheduled SHM start time. After getting fed up with the wait I never bothered heading back to Main and just ended my night in Mojave. I wasn’t there for Frank in 2023 but I imagine that there was a similar exodus of frustrated people toward Boris Brejcha. Removing those backup options should mean that the headliner respects the fact that the entire fest is waiting on their show.
Can someone ask the old lady from Egypt what she thinks of Lana Del Rey headlining Coachella so we can know whether the festival has redeemed its reputation as a laughingstock worldwide

That was Calvin Harris last year, too. I was never going to watch the whole thing, but I wanted to see some of it on my way out and after 15 minutes I said F it and went to camp.

I was waiting around for Frank and my Gf and her sisters went to get some food, hit the merch tent, rode the ferris wheel and got a spot in Vip to just chill out at and still sat around for half an hour. They were so over it. I shouldve told em to go into Yuma for a bit just cause. The crazy thing was phones were working at the time which is a rarity at Main.
Considering how small El Rey is, I dont know if this means anything for the Gobi, but I just heard on KCRW that BCS sold it out in under a minute for his 4/18 show.
Where did the idea that no doubt is playing for 1:50 mins come from
The setlist you can kind of see in their video clips is maybe at max 20 songs. Why rehearse that many songs on a setlist if you arent being given the time. Their last tour the sets were 18 at festivals and 90 mins. So thats probably closer to what we get.

Its more that La people really wanted to see Barry in such a small venue before he comes back and probably plays Shrine Expo Hall. Fred played the Fonda in between and sold that out quick too.
So in 8 months Lana went from being fine subbing OSL and playing at the same time as Foo Fighters to demanding an unopposed headliner spot at Coachella. If this happens I blame it more on Goldenvoice saying yes than on Lana for asking.

Yes, meant to mention this in various rants but Lana is also known for being late, including at Glastonbury last year, where she wound up getting cut off. It's just an absolutely atrocious decision on GV's part if it comes to fruition. Really hoping it does not.

Essentially every single show of his on this tour was going for $150ish after fees or more (his SF show was approaching $300 after fees). I'm actually surprised it's not higher for the El Rey show, but I imagine Coachella is a big reason for that.

Coachella had a hard enough time booking headliners this year yet y’all still wished they would’ve turned away Lana for a lesser shittier headliner in favor of keeping underattended sets.
Got a message saying the Mojave schedule I posted is outdated, and that Anti Up are actually closing the Mojave. When I asked about a specific time, they said "Times are changing daily right now".

Shutting down the festival for any headliner should be extremely rare and reserved for special circumstances on principle. The entire reason most people go to big festivals is because of the variety of acts and the ability to have multiple choices at any given time, but as a consumer you should absolutely expect choices during the peak night-time slots. If GV's current bargaining position with headliners is so awful that they're forced to give exclusivity to lower-tier HL acts just to get them to sign then they need to reassess how they got to that point and fix it.
And if the alternative is thousands of people streaming for the exits when LDR is on her 5th snoozer in a row at 1145pm on Friday, then it seems pretty obvious that underattended sets are the clear winner.

I would bet a frozen lemonade if there were a way to measure this that by the halfway point of Lana's set there will be like 40,000 people there at most, leaving more than half the festival (2/3 in a sellout!) to go home if there's nothing else, so yeah, I'm fucking complaining about it. Either way, weird thing to defend GV for in general but especially when prices are going up and the lineup is going down.
