I called Alice in Chains buttrock on this board back in like 2012 and got absolutely torched for it.
Well deserved torching. I was almost pretty pissed when the idiot voters knocked them out last time they were in survivor. Minions not appreciating the greatness that is Dirt - an easy top 3 grunge album even if they were kind of hybrid metal.
Funny you should ask. I just saw They Might Be Giants the other night for the first time, and I actually thought to myself at one point, “This is the anti-buttrock.”

To answer the question in a much more complicated way, if buttrock is short for "nothing but rock", the opposite would be "anything but rock", so you'd have to find some kind of music that lacks any sort of rock and roll influence. Maybe something indigenous?

No wrong answer here, but in my head the opposite would still ostensibly be "rock music", just the type of rock music you wouldn't hear on those types of stations.
TMBG is a good answer because they really see themselves as a rock band but their albums sound like children's music and they write tunes about US presidents and painters and shoehorns with teeth.
Pavement might be an even better answer because they even better embody the tropes of rock and roll but do it all with a knowing smirk on their face, but without the apologetic attitude of 00s indie. Pavement was hot shit and knew they were hot shit and acted like it, but also knew they would never be rock stars.
The bones of say, "Silent Kid", with different lyrics and a different singer and slicker playing and production could easily be a buttrock anthem. God that song is so fucking awesome.
