also feel like covers shouldn't be allowed? what do i know
idk. Some covers, particularly Cities or Loving Cup or Crosseyed and Painless, kinda feel like Phish have partial ownership now. Even Also Sprach Zarathustra isn't theirs originally.
i went through the same thought process. i wouldn't put like "back in the USSR" on my list, but a cover that is a regular part of the phish repertoire to me just feels like a phish song.
1. Tweezer Reprise 2. Harpua 2. Col. Forbin's Ascent 4. Carini 5. The Lizards 6. The Curtain With 7. Slave to the Traffic Light 8. Crosseyed and Painless 9. Tweezer 10. Divided Sky
HM: Also Sprach Zarathustra, Chalkdust Torture, Maze, Sneakin Sally Through the Alley, Scents and Subtle Sounds, Silent in the Morning, Brian and Robert, Fluffhead, You Enjoy Myself
I think Harpua misses my list largely because I’ve never seen it live, so I don’t have the connection with it that I do with other songs.
makes sense.
it's an amazing feeling hearing the "oom pa pa" start coming from the stage. then that ridiculous rhythm drops in, the incredibly stupid lyrics. i love the 7/4/2010 because trey audibly laughs after the "we'll help you party down line". i think it's the most desired song for a phish fan to hear live.
live the narrative portion and cover are lots of fun, but when i listen to it, i typically listen to the first few minutes up until the narrative, then skip until the last few minutes. that guitar riff the last couple of minutes is so stupefyingly beautiful, i can barely handle it.
for anyone curious, the 7/4/2010 alpharetta harpua > killing in the name > harpua is on spotify and is very listenable.
strong disagree. novelty song with limited utility.
edit: only one i care about is where they used it to play the entire Dark Side of the Moon album in 98 at a show that was half-empty, which absolutely ruled

i think it's just a great song. when i think of a phish novelty song i think of something like BBFCM (which i also love to hear live but wouldn't call it a great song). harpua has a great silly groove, incredibly addictive bassline, great flow to the lyrics, and the "a dog" portion at the end, with that riff, is truly beautiful. it's a song that starts super dumb and ends in transcendence, similar to slave, although harpua is dumber at the beginning then slave.
also im having trouble between including songs that i like just as songs vs. those that I'd most want to hear jammed out live.
i tried to choose songs i love hearing the composed parts of, not just the ones that are jam vehicles. like i'm always excited to hear Mike's Song, but only because i'm looking forward to what they do with it, not the actual song part which is fine but not great, so it didn't make my list.

This was also my approach and thus why I left off Tweezer.

objectively i understand Tweezer is barely a song, it's pretty much just a riff and a funky beat. but i really love that riff and funky beat. and i really love the Uncle Ebenezer section.
also the existence of Tweezer Reprise, the #1 song on my list, makes me like Tweezer more. because if i'm at a show and a Tweezer starts, in addition to probably getting a good jam, I'm almost assured to get a Tweezer Reprise
on the other hand you have a song like DWD, which most people adore, and also almost always results in a big jam. By any measure it's a better song than Tweezer. it's catchy, it has a chorus, and a chorus that is recognizable and catchy and provides a dependable high school senior year quote. but personally i just don't enjoy the composed section of DWD. maybe i'm just tired of it, but if so i've been tired of it for like 20 years.
if i hear those opening notes of DWD to start set 2, and the bathrooms were too crowded during setbreak, i have no qualms with using those first few minutes as a bathroom break.

That's a bold bathroom break song. My bathroom break songs are Sand and Moma Dance.

That's a bold bathroom break song. personally i can't risk missing the crowd shouting "i'd have myself to blame".

It is the song I have seen live more than any other song by any artist, and I gotta pee sometime. It is a sacrifice I have grown to accept. It really makes me appreciate Drums/Space, though.
1. Two Dope Boyz in a Cadillac 2. Chokyfire 3. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik 4. ATLiens 5. Elevators (Remix version) 6. Mrs. Jackson 7. Da Art of Storytellin Pt 1 8. Hootie Hoo 9. Slump 10. Players Ball
HM: Jazzy Belle Hey Ya Da Art of Storytellin Pt 2 Return of the G Skew It on the Bar-B Funky Ride
This is a ridiculous exercise, as I'm sure I'd produce a different list a month from now. But as of today, this is what I've got for Phish: Chalkdust Torture Golgi Apparatus My Friend, My Friend Blaze On The Lizards Bathtub Gin Crowd Control Character Zero Sigma Oasis Kill Devil Falls
For this list especially, a lot of it has to do with live experiences that went just right. And my love for My Friend, My Friend is apparently not widely shared, but Rift was my entry into Phish and that was the first song on the album that stuck with me. Somehow they've played that four or five times for me, and I'm the only one around going nuts.
