Bolt should, and I think will. theres simply nothing more impressive than being the fastest human in the world and it feeling like no one has a shot of catching your record for a long time.
This article covers it pretty well here but the reason why Gretzky does not belong in the same sentence with the other people on this list (after Phelps and Simone are gone) is how completely inaccessible hockey is to anyone outside of very rich and/or very cold countries. Matt Duchene (who played for the Avalanche for a while, and I believe the Stars now) had his dad tally up the costs to get him to the point of being drafted, and it was over $300,000.

I was making the accessibility point in earlier rounds with gymnastics and swimming as well. Just way more specialized in regards to equipment, facility access and coaching.

Has anyone pointed out during this whole thing that if Wayne Gretzky never scored a single goal in his career he would still be the all time points leader?

Once you get to the level of being in this conversation this point is irrelevant

How are you measuring the greatness of the athlete if you're not considering the pool of competition? More barriers to entry means less competitive pools. Or in some instances, it means a whole lot of Canadian guys.

You're asking me to consider factors that the athlete can't control, which to me seems a little unfair.
And with Gretzky in particular, he laps his competition so much that I think it can be inferred that he'd still be the GOAT.
And frankly that's a little unfair to the people these athletes were or are competing against. You're acting like these athletes were competing against bad athletes, which is blatantly untrue

Gretzky can't control who he played against, but it's absolutely a consideration for greatest athlete of all time.
If Messi was only playing against guys from Canada and Minnesota (probably like North Dakota too idk) then I'm guessing his #s would look different.

Memories are hazy but I think he bought the team a new traveling bus. He had the penthouse in the back but that’s okay. People could hate on Jordan in this poll, and unfortunately but frankly it’s Inforoo, so he could wrongfully be voted off before the top 3. But everyone knows that there is one sports corporate symbol that stands for excellence. I don’t know if Jordan is the greatest athlete ever or not. But if I picked the alias off the top of my head when I saw what the survivor was, it’s validated. [tm]

Kinda think Jerry Rice already being gone was a mistake. I get that Brady has the most Super Bowls and all but Jerry Rice was more athletic in every way. QB is a weird position. Athleticism (running/speed) gets held against QBs much of the time. Brady was obviously great but not what you'd call "athletic". A lot of QBs can dunk. Can Brady dunk? He says he can. He's 6'4". But there's no video.

Then there was Marvin Harrison.
I had a friend whose DB coach played in the league and that coach's opinion was that Rice and Harrison were the only two WRs in the conversation.
