This year'll be my first at bonnaroo (already bouncing out of my skin for it) and I've been trolling around this site for awhile already. Tons of great info here. I'm pretty sure this is a new question.
What are your thoughts on a cot vs. an air mattress?
I guess I should also mention the options of mat, and nothing at all--for all you masochists

as someone that had to fly in, and had a pretty small tent, i preferred a cot.
it's lighter takes up less space in your luggage has a smaller footprint in your tent easier to set up easier to take down and best of all, it doesn't deflate!
I've never been to Roo but my experiences have shown the air matress to be more comfortable, but like crazykitten said you might have to pump it up a little everyday. a little work for a little more comfort :-)
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

Last year I forgot to pack a cot/air matress and ended up buying a cheap blow up pool raft for $4. It worked pretty well and it hardly took up any space to pack...plus it wasn't too awful to blow up.
I slept on a foam pad for 14 years when camping bought a cheap air matress and pump last year and man it felt so good sleeping on that thing, only bad thing was that I forgot to bring a sheet to put on it, so i was having to peel myself of of it.

Last year was our first year sleeping on an air mattress and it was wonderful. I never knew that I could be that comfortable at Bonnaroo. Considering the utterly hard and rocky campsite we were dealt, i can't imagine how I would have slept (at all) last year. We will ALWAYS come equipped with one from now on. Trust me, bring an air matress. If you don't need it, you'll just be super-comfy. If you do need one, you'll be more grateful than you can imagine.
Both years I've been on an air mattress with someone else...I definitely think that this year, I'll use my own. The weight distribution between two people is annoying because when they get up, your side deflates!
I would also think a cot might keep you cooler because air can circulate underneath you...thoughts on that?
The people next to us brought one of those insane Aero pillowtop beds. I was very jealous.

I've used an air mattress, slept on the ground in a sleeping bag, tried a foam mattress, but nothing beats my cot. Keeps me dry, off the ground, & I sleep comfortably so I wake up ready for another day of non-stop partying!! I feel like a cot salesman, but damn if I don't love my cot! I've used it the past 4 roo's and I won't go without it.
i've done the air mattress thing before and it worked well....but reading this thread has convinced me to try a cot this year.....thanks for the advice!!
I may have to look into a cot or so as well. Last year I just rooled out the sleeping bag on top of a sheet and honestly it was real nice. The first night it took a sec to get used to but after that and each night forth I was out....that is untill the sun rose.
I camped with a cot for 20 years or so, and recently switched to an air mattress.
If you don't roll over in your sleep, or you tend to stay on your back or side the whole time, a cot is probably a better solution for you. You have an air barrier underneath you, you can put your shoes and other things below, and it allows for more people to stay in a given tent.
An air mattress is better for couples (or triples - oh that I could be so lucky... ) who want to sleep together. Or if you roll around in your sleep. It might require refilling slightly each day, but I seem to get a better night's sleep with an air mattress. When I'm not car camping, it's back to the cot for weight and convenience.
They both have pros and cons, it really depends on your situation.

Nice post pigsnzen. If I were going to be sleeping solo I would go with a cot. Sleeping with another person (assuming you like that person), I would recommend an air mattress - and the extra tall ones are only a few dollars more than the regular ones and are so much better (good price on Coleman brand at Target).
EDIT - and be sure to buy the D-battery pump. you'll be glad you did and the batteries last a long time.
