This is awsome. I was wondering the same thing on how to get a flag up. Karma confused for actually getting the info and unlike me sitting around waiting..haha

yea you can just cut the long pole in smaller pieces and use a pvc straight connector when you get there to connect them, really it's only up termporary, you don't even have to glue them in when you get there, you can just push them in and it will stay together for what you will be using it for. the glue is only for when it's gonna be carrying water and such!
I say duct tape at a minimum. I always use glue because a little wind will really bend a PVC pole. In 04 my glued pole broke during a strong storm. And I guarantee the flag pole in the instructions above would not hold without glue.
Glue only cost $3-$4 and you buy it right beside the PVC. Of course you may need a hack saw also to cut the pole back to a managable size after Roo ends. Still everything for under $20 and you can use it every year (just buy new connectors )

I just figured out my own question by looking at leo's guide again. The one side is glued, and then when you get there, put the other side in and use those cotter pins to hold it while you are using it....then when 'roo is over take the cotter pins out and disassemble.....thanks for the input.
Having used the flagpole in a couple of high winds I've found the weak point to be the large PVC sleeve you hammer into the ground. If you don't sink it deep enough it can lean over if the wind picks up. The PVC pipe and the joints hold up fine, they have enough give to flex w/o breaking.
I use 1-1/2" PVC instead of 1" and only glue one side of the connectors, wrapping the other side with duct-tape. I've never had any issues with high winds or breakage even with two large flags.
Why not just one tall straight vertical mast with no T-Bar on the top. My thought was to use three 6' sections of the larger diameter and two 6' sections of the smaller diameter. Just insert the smaller into the larger (3' into each of two larger ones) then put two cotter pins through each portion for durability.... once sunk in the ground, even if three feet deep, you'll have 15' exposed. If laying down it would look something like this... a | indicates a break between sections.
i think the t is so you can hang the flag from the top. that way even if there is no wind it will be fully displayed. but im sure you could do it without it.
Realizing that a flag pole is a lifesaver in the tent camping areas, but...does anyone know if they are used in the RV areas or would even be useful in those areas? This is my first year so not sure. thx

This is something like what mine will look like, but Im not flying an actual flag, its going to be a ton of ribbon, that will flap in the breeze... going to be beautiful.... hehe.

I've seen flags/markers all over the RV section. Personally, all those white RVs look more alike to me than a sea of different colored tents and tarps.
We are going to have an EZ up type canopy and I was thinking about adhering the flag pole to that. Any thoughts?
If your flag is very big, I'd make sure the pole is a couple of feet in the ground or you stake down your EZ-up very well if that's the only secure point. If the wind kicks up, it would be another thing acting like a sail to lift your EZ-up.
If it's small (2' or less), I would just lash the flagpole to a corner and call it a day.

Thanks pigsnzen. I think we're going make the canopy as secure as possible and the flag isn't so big hopefully it will work...guess we'll see. We'll be under the William and Mary flag.

Whooo it took me like 6 hours to shop and build my first flagpole. 6 hours cause I built my friend's one as well. I'm beet but excited and designing my lights and flag for it now. When I'm done I'll tell you guys what it looks like and you have to come visit me. I'll be hoping to find the Inforoo camp too! Is there going to be a main flag?

whilst we're on the topic, does anyone (HEY LEO) know where to get big/durable/not party- balloons that i could tie to the top of my flagpole?? i remember seeing some people with these thick rubbery looking jams with loonnnnnng strings last year and thought it was a great idea..
plus, as high up as my flag was, i still had some trouble finding it bc of the way the terrain slanted where i was....

This thread might help you out with your balloon question...(go near the bottom of the page).
This is last years flagpole. This is a 26' fiberglass pole.
Do a search on the Internet for "fiberglass flagpoles". They will run you close to $100 for the pole.
If you are staying in VIP I wouldn't bother with a pole...You will find your camper or tent without any problem..I know this year we will not bring ours..
Here is a pic of the base I made. It is a piece of pipe welded to a flange then bolted on the 2X8 piece of wood. It is a very sturdy base.
