Hello all..This might be a idea for you people in tents. I just received two for the tent ends on our camper do deflect some of the sun's rays. I purchased them from Cabela's (www.cabelas.com), Item number XG-510214 "Sportsman's Space Blankets" Not bad quality for 12.99
They're designed to reflect heat from the surface. Some space blankets have a blanket types surface on the inside and the reflective coating on the outside. Most of the space blankets you see for like 3.99, are a big sheet of reflective material. On the top of tent-ends, they'll reflect the sunlight away. Lost in the woods and it's 30* out, it'll reflect your heat back at your body
Those Cabela's look pretty nice. If you want some cheap thin ones though, check out CountyComm countycomm.com/blanket.htm they sell 'em for $1.80/pc, I keep a couple in the truck just in case. They'd reflect the sun pretty well, might blow around a little though. I've bought a couple of things from the guys at CountyComm before and never had a problem.
I wonder how I could attach them to the top of my canopy. I might pick them up and borrow some double sided tape from work. That might help actually. That would keep the sun from heating up the canopy too bad and might give more shade as well.

The ones for 1.80 are quite different. They are a thin piece of material. The ones I purchased are like a tarp.
I am going to attach them to the tent ends on the camper with binder clips. If I had a tent I would put them on top of the rain fly.
I will have pics in two weeks as I am going to a NASCAR race and will be using them.
We considered RV - but it would mean borrowing a friends truck and pull behind and paying for the gas for a dually - not sure if we want the expense - we did fine last year with the tent
Last year our round trip from New Jersey costs us $490. I think gas was around the $3 mark.
yeah - that's what I mean - we can take the SUV and only spend about $100.00 there and back - leave more money to spend on stupid things once we get there - LOL
The price of gas is not bad considering that is for two people towing a small weekend home with them. We also didn't spend a dime on food or beer last year, we brought everything with us. So $490 is not bad for two people.
I just picked up a tarp from Lowe's yesterday for $20. Its 10' x 12' and one side has reflective material that purports to deflect sunlight...it sounds good, so we shall see

Ugh, the idea of tarps and how to use them confuses me. I wonder if its because I'm stupid or something. Do you put the tarp directly onto your tent or do you kind of suspend them above your tent somehow? We are going to bring an EZ-Up and I read a coupla people in this thread were going to attach them to their shade tent...with binder clips?? How in the H is that supposed to work?
These things are a lifesaver in more than one way. I can recall sweating under the hot sun in biloxi after hurricane katrina. no air conditioning-power was out. no shade-leaves were blown off of trees. we would spread a space blanket over the windshield and front windows held by the windshield wipers and cracked open window. My teammates www.dmatny2.org and I would sit in the car turning it on for brief bursts of air conditioning.
Actually sounds like skills that would come in handy at bonnaroo. the space blankets are very thin anc can be held on almost anyway. double sided tape, binder clips would work, actually you could use duct tape too. theres also always the old boy scout trick of grabbing a pebble with the blanket and tying a small rope around the bottom of the pebble. try to visualize it, it works!

I am not going to attach the space blanket to the shade tent (EZUP) Don't really see the need since it is white.
They (space blankets) are going on the tent ends or our camper. You need to know how the camper looks. I am going to attach them with binder clips to the ends of the stitched material on the camper.
If I were to have a tent I would fasten in some way shape or fashion the space blanket over top of the tent.

I've just faced that fact that even though little things help...my tent will always be hott as F-U-C-K when I wake up at Roo
preach it! I used space blankets in 04 and though it helped with the intensity it was still hot as a basturd, up until it rained. I would still recommend using them to all who are thinking about it though.
P.S. Yo booyakasha .....karma for having an awLsome name.......it was my grandmothers......
I recommend hanging the tarp above the tent rather than directly on top of rainfly. Placing directly on your tent will trap the heat inside. If possible use tarp poles, vehicle, etc and get it a foot above your tent without the rainfly this will allow for air flow taking the hot air away. However depending on weather you may want to leave your rainfly on if you're going to be gone from the campsite for a while.
Those $20 sun tarps that are dark on one side and silvery on the other do indeed work! They have saved me for the last two years.
The air space in between the tarp and your tent is important. It's all about air flow. Get a tent fan too.
I camped next to some guys last year who built this huge canopy that was attatched to a rented enterprise van and suspended by two poles on the opposite corners. The whole thing was held up in the middle with a big pole. They had TWO sun tarps with space in between them. The dark sides were turned in toward each other, to trap the heat. It was a paradise.
