So i've never been able to stay in constant sun exposure for very long at all...... Kind of makes me apprehensive about going to 'roo. I can burn just by riding in the car on the side the sun is on. SPF 40 doesn't do much good. Any tips for staying cool and protected from the sun without missing shows?
I have been told baby sun screen is really good for pale, sensitive skin....
Yeas, use spf 50 Kid's sunscreen. Bring a hat. Stake out some shade under a tree in Centeroo.
I don't know if you tan at all but if you do spend a little time in the sunover the next month to get a tan. Worst thing to do is have Roo be your first time in the sun this year.
SPF 50 - Bullfrog makes a good waterproof sunscreen. I am a redhead - I burn - then tan - luckily I have a base tan at the moment - but I will still be useing and SPF 40 or 50 at 'roo - I do not want a sunburn to ruin my weekend
Get a large floppy hat, something with a wide brim to keep the sun off, makes a huge difference. If you really can't take the sun even with high SPF (I've seen it up to 50+), you're going to need to wear clothes to cover up. Something light obviously (linen might be good), that will keep the rays off without killing you from heatstroke. The 2 largest stages are open air, but the smaller ones have roofs to provide shade. Also, as with sunscreen, apply it often, even if it says it lasts all day. Additionally, sunscreen breaks down after about 2 yrs or so, make sure the stuff you use is fresh.

I'm fair skinned and I sometimes tan, but I ALWAYS burn. I plan on using some baby sunscreen that is the highest SPF I can find.
I have several hats I plan on wearing, and I'm bringing an umbrella to use when I'm in open spaces. I emailed Bonnaroo and they said a small umbrella would be fine. That will also help with the heat somewhat! ( I can't control my body temp very well...stupid thyroid...so I have to have some sort of shade from the sun.)

I'm a pale redhead too. I also have freckles that really come out in the summer even when I'm in the shade with sun screen. My hat advice... don't just use a ball cap or visor. Get something that has a wide brim all the way around. I also pick hats that are dark or that have a dark lining that cast a nice shade on my face. Light hats reflect the sun away from the surface at the top but also the sun shines through the light material and does not cast a good dark shade on the face.
The ideal hat would be one that is... 1. a light airy material that has some mesh so it allows breathability 2. light colored on the top 3. has a dark lining under the brim 4. has at least a 3" brim that goes all the way around the hat
Tilly hats are the best but pricey. I don't have one of them yet.
Another thing I do is wear an oversized long sleeve shirt over a tank top. I have trouble finding just the right kind for the summer, but I look for very gauzy, voile like material so the air can blow though it and help keep me cool. For Centeroo, I'm bringing a personal mister and personal fan that you wear around your neck. You know, the kind that break after about two hours. ( I bought several for back-ups - 99 cents at Wamart)
Needless to say... I'm not very attractive during the summer but at least I'm not increasing my risk of melanoma. At dusk, I'll go back to camp, and remove my silly shirt and hat and wash my hair and look like a normal person for the night shows.

Sorry to post twice in a row but I wanted to add a little more.
I have a problem with most sun screens in that the chemical ingredients tend to break me out and cause a burning, itching on my skin. yes, even the sentitive skin kind, so what I do is wear mineral make-up. Usually the SPF is 15 or so but it works for me. The ingredients is zinc oxide (some have titanium oxide as well) which is a sun block rather than a sun screen. The screens work by being absorbed into the skin and then counter acting the damaging rays that are encountered. Blocks on the other hand physically block and reflect the the rays before they penetrate the skin. My husband always laughs at me because he sees me putting on make-up (foundation) before doing yard work. This is in addition to the hat and long sleeved shirt. After a couple of hours I do end up sweating much of it off but then I'm ready to head indoors anyway.
Like Oleander, I'm also gonna bring in a tiny umbrella and I plan on limiting my direct sun exposue during the day to only the shows I really want to see. The rest of the time in Centeroo, I plan on visiting the tented stages and hanging out under the trees and enjoying listening to the music from afar and doing some people watching. My major enjoyment from Bonnoroo will be after the sun goes down.
I hope this helps. I hope you will still choose to go and not let the sun make you miss out.
I'm like you, Ole. I can't keep cool. Need shade. That's why sleep is my Roo problem.
Cold doesn't bother me. I'll go out to the barn and feed the animals in shorts and a tank top at 25 degrees but it's 80 today and I'm roasting. I'm trying to spend a few hours a day in the heat to acclimate as much as possible but...
But heat and sunburn are a small price to pay fro BONNAROOOOO!

my skin is pretty pale/sensitive to sun too and i had no problems last year with burning. the biggest advice i can give you is go high SPF and reapply OFTEN...i put on sunblock around 4 times a day, plus after each time i run through the fountain.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

I'm not a redhead, but I do have very pale skin that burns very easily. My reeomendations would be...
1. Baby sunscreen, SPF 30-15 and reapply at least once an hour while the sun is at it's strongest (from about 10-2)
2. Zinc Oxide (the pasty white stuff) all over your face and lips. If you rub it in enough, it won't be too white.
3. A big floppy hat and big sunglasses.
4. Wear a light (cotton) light colored long sleeved shirt. This may look like it would make you hotter, but the sun won't be getting to your skin as much.
5. Stay hydtated, and soak a bandanna or other cloth with cold water and wear it around your neck.
6. Try to stay out of the sun, and if you feel like you're getting burnt, or you just can't stand the heat, go find some shade, sit down, and drink a lot.
PS. DO NOT FORGET to apply sunscreen to these often looked over parts: -Tops of feet and toes -Under any clothing straps/sleeves (I always get burnt on that one sliver where my sleeve or tank top strap barely covers my skin) -Lips -the part of your hair (if not wearing a hat) -Ears -Back of your neck
I'm really excited for Roo, but I know a bad sunburn will ruin my time. Us pale people have to be prepared!

I'm miss pale ghost so I understand your guy's pain. I've already suffered one major burning this summer, and now have the oddest tan lines ever. Oh well
I live in the southwest where temps can easily reach the 110's but I HATE humidity. I think that's what's going to kill me the most when I'm at bonnaroo. I can deal with heat and a blazing sun, but the moisture *whew*
"My greatest hope is to laugh as much as cry; to get my work done and try to love somebody and have the courage to accept the love in return" Maya Angelou
"We can't do much about the length of our lives, but we can do plenty about it's width and depth" Evan Esar
"Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen, and thinking what nobody has thought." Albert Szent-Gyorgi
I was just wondering that as well, I would say It probably does... Leo mentioned above that its not a good idea to keep it longer than two years, which means the stuff I use on my face, I need to buy more. I would say its a good idea to get new stuff every couple years, it gets really gross, oily, and just nasty after a while.
i don't burn that bad but I am the poster child for skin cancer risk factors so sunscreen is a must. I get the kind that sprays on but since I don't want to lug around a full size bottle of sunscreen I fill up one of those little travel size spray bottles and resquirt myself constantly.
i camped with a friend who had some medical issues last year and he tended to rest during the really hot sunny part of the day and stay out all night long. he would sleep from about 10-5 then get up. he would stay out til about 5am then come and and eat and shower and go to bed. im not sure how he stayed asleep during the heat of the day but he did - maybe from exhaution and it kept him from being out in the broiling sun. it was also good because it gave us a break from each other - i was there more at night and him more during the day - we had some privacy.

Just smear yourself with the mud near the Porta-potties and you won't burn a bit. It may help you get to the front of the crowd too.
Hehe, its funny you mention that actually. My friend MATT has been coming up with all these off the wall ways to get to the front of the crowd and that was actually one of them
