It's probably a midew funk. What I've done in the past and it actually works, it so fill up my bathtub with water and a light bleach solution. Lay the tent in it overnight. Rinse the next day and air dry.

Could you stick the tent in a washer with bleach, water, and a little detergent? This is how I wash my shower curtain liner. It works...just put in a few towels with the tent for some abrasion.
You can pick up some cleaner at any outdoor/backpacking store....it deodorizes and waterproofs the tent......I used it last year and it worked like a charm! Just clean it in the bath tub and let it soak!

A lot of tent manuals specifically say do NOT put this in the washer.. I would go with the bathtub idea

Wow a man that reads manuals.......I thought this was unheard of lol
If I can't put the thing together after 30-40 mins I *might* read the manual
However, with ANY product, if the manufacturers are so bold as to sticky the manual to the front with a "READ THIS FIRST" thing, i will mot certainly avoid reading the manual at all costs. pfft, who do they think I am?
On this same note... or a similar one, does anyone have any advice on how to keep your tent from getting that way in the first place? I just bought a brand new, massive tent, and would like to have it for a while...
if it rains and your tent is in that rain storm whiel your camping, its going to get wet, along with the fly so when you get home, set the tent back up and let it air out in the sun for a couple days and i guess you could use febreeze or something of the sort to make it smell nice if it did start to mildew already or if you jyust want a nice smelling tent...

Meh. I stand by my washing machine suggestion.
I have a relatively small (keyword) REI two-man tent and have washed the fly in the washing machine on cold, with the gentle cycle, with only a minor shake of detergent, a handful of times. After the dust storm down at McDowell Mountain, it was pretty essential. Assuming your tent isn't a fuc*ing garage, I say go for it. Just make sure your gentle cycle is truly GENTLE and check on it often throughout the process.
here you go....light bleach solution....then light washing machine cycle....then long air out in sun......tent should be white and sterile after that haha
edit: wow I'm an idiot....already fixed it ....haha *backs away slowly*
