Has anyone tried it before? Cell phone reception is crap and I'm oragnizing a group of 20 people this year to go. I plan on just using basic 16-channel walkie talkies but I can't imagine that working. Any thoughts?
Hmmm - there are a few other threads around here that mention walkie talkies - I think Wooz sounds very knowledgeable on the issue - maybe he will check this and comment

We used walkie talkies for the drive down and worked excellent for organizing gas/bathroom breaks and to help keep us drivers entertained. We didn't use them once we were there, we just set up meet times at landmarks.
Walkie talkies are really fun at roo as so many people have them.
If you get the ones with privacy codes, they can be useful for communicating in the campgrounds..
Don't count on them working in centeroo! You won't be able to hear a darn thing someones saying to you 95 percent of the time.
They're awesome for the ride down, make sure you scan around for other rooers using other channels!
Also, don't spend too much money on them, and try to get the kind that use AA batteries instead of the ones you recharge. It is much easier to stick a new set of batteries in every other day than to try to charge them in a car..
Edit to add: Oh, and they call them privacy codes.. but your conversation isn't private at all. Setting a privacy code on your walkie of say.. 42, will enable your walkie to squelch everyone who isn't communicating on privacy code 42. So you only hear your friend.. however, anyone on the same channel as you who doesnt have a privacy code set can hear everyone using the channel.

walkie talkies are fun but for practical purposes, you can't beat texts on the cell phone
That is, assuming the person you're sending it to has a cell phone service that actually notifies you when you get texts. Or they don't have a phone that takes 5+ hours to get your text messages....

Walkie talkies are fun, I had a few random conversations with total strangers that were quite entertaining. We brought them as our primary means of communication last year but rapidly learned that texting was much easier. There was just too much ambient noise to hear the radios especially in Centeroo.
It was fun to mess with drunk people on the walkie talkies though... some guy kept looking for his friends all night, sounded pretty pitiful.
one of my friend's neighbors, this gal Kristen, loved screwing with people latenight when they were looking for people..
Some dude: James? James are you out there? Kristen: *starts making sex noises* We're busy!! Some dude: Whoah... whats goin on there? Kristen: James is busy! Go away!! Some dude: ....Go James!! I'll see you tomorrow dude
^^ Bigger screen+ the ability to have like 10 people you could send to would make that worth it.. if you're just going with one other person though it could work
I also found something called "Fuse Box" which is for kids, and uses WiFi to send text messages so it doesnt require a plan. Thats 70 bucks though

Werd. Texting is the only effective way to communicate across centeroo. We found our friends in the middle of the crowd (literally) at the Police like nothing with texting.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
At late night Bisco 06 this guy had a phone that had lights all around it that blinked and changed color when he got a text. It was bitchin! My friend Lori just walked up to him and asked if she could have it... he let her play with it for about 20 minutes ;D
