UM in an RV as close to centeroo as possible .....which means I will figure out a way to bring more seafood! I'm a seafood freak! Anyone else have experience with bringing fishies of any kind?
someone above mentioned foil pouches -- those work great with salmon portions. I've never tried cooking them on a propane stove but they're fantastic on the grill.
I'm going to make a pot of my prize-winning vegetable soup and freeze small portions in zip-lock bags. It's delicious cold and very healthy and easy.
Some things I read here and really worked out for me:
freeze a couple cases of water bottles and use that for your ice. (tip from these boards) We had two coolers with our car, one for beer/frozen bottled water, and one for just food and frozen waterbottles.
Powdered drinks and a jar with a lid to make them in.
Chilled fruit: Keep a few cans of chunk pineapple, oranges, frozen grapes etc in the cooler. They are refreshing when it's hot.. have lots of energy.
easy snacks - arrow root animal cookies, nutella, peanut butter in the squeeze tube, crackers, apples, salsa in plastic container, chips, nuts.
Since I like to cook, I brought an assortment of overlapping ingredients to make simple things with my propane stove: Tortillas: 3 bags, used with most everything, the right size for my small non-stick frying pan. Saffron rice (cooked at home)- used in burritos, and in tuna wraps tuna fish packets (cold in the cooler) used in tuna fish salad (gather fast food mayo packets) with chips and in wraps Some shredded precooked carnita meat (this year I will do chicken) for burritos- little goes a long way here shredded cheese - for wraps and burritos and in quesidillas Good salsa in plastic screw cap tupperware. eggs - for breakfast burritos shallots - each is a good single serving onion. quesidillas - savory: with jalapeno/shallots cheese and sourcream, or sweet: with nutella and banana slices.
I also made baked some homemade treats to share with the neighbors (pecan bars)
I think we ate most everything perishable, and always had extra to offer with people around us.. sharing food is a primal kindness.
Oh and another thing: I had all this great food packed up really well in the car but couldn't get to it. This year I am packing a small bag of snacks, drinks and diversions for the line going in!
i posted this in the fashion thread because we are all trying to eat smart to look our most fabuous but its a food hint so here goes: if you live in nashville, believe it or not, you can get these filets at the dollar general market on mufreesboro road. they have several types of fish including salmon and they are wrapped individually in plastic. i am even thinking of trying to take some to roo for the first full day if i can assure that i can keep them frozen enough.
they are GREAT. you can just put on in the frig in the morning and when you get home it is defrosted. cook a couple of minutes on each side. in my opinion they are better than fresh salmon that i get here in nashville (but wouldnt be as good as what you can get seaside i know this) . i think they freeze them faster .
i encourage all nashvillieans to try the dollar general market. they have GREAT fruit veggies and everything else. the store is clean and the people are very nice. its in a saucy neighborhood but work over near there and theres no real problem there - and the manager stands near the store entrance and watches things.
i went there last year before roo and got a ton of cheap stuff including a baked cake, wonderful bread, and fresh fruit.

I like to cook at least one good meal for several people while I'm there. I didn't cook last year on account of being in VIP, but I'm going to this year. I don't do this for the convenience, obviously. I do it so my friends and neighbors can have some really good food without having to pay out the arse. A few years ago I camped next to some folks from Wisconsin, and both of our camps pitched in and shared his cheddarwurst and green beans, and my blackened chicken and crawfish/vodka pineapple kabobs. None of the Winsconsin folks had ever had cajun food before. Good Times.

on the food thing, last yuear was my first roo and i really thought i was going to want to grill out so i bought those crappy little disposable grill things and we never even used them, it was just a pain. It was me and several guys and they went crazy for the strawberries and oranges and the gatorade that i brought. oh, and also crackers. But seriously, I kept wanting to go to the vendors and try all the food and it wasnt expesnive at all. I say do that.

Yeah, that's why I usually just bring the ingredients for one good planned dinner, and the rest of the time it's granola bars, uncrustables, and whatever they have in the vip tent.

This year my friends want to bring food to cook but I'm with some of you guys, I love the vendor food. And usually when I get up in the morning I don't want to sit around camp too long. I like to get up and go. We brought snack foods last year that were fine for something in the morning until we got to shakedown for some real food.
The worst part about our snack food was that since we had so much we had dumped it all into a garbage bag to fit in a car on the way down there and we ended up leaving it at our campsite when we left. We had two cars and everybody in each car thought the bag was in the other car until we stopped for gas the first time. So don't put your snacks in a garbage bag. lol.

I always love to cook at Roo. My secret though is I only focus on one large meal for the camp daily. I keep it fairly simple like Steak and Eggs on Friday, marinated Chicken breasts on Saturday, Sausage on Sunday. It works well and everybody in camp looks forward to the meal. Its great community, we get to talk about anticpated shows of the day and the craziness we saw the night before. Also the snacks for your camp mates to carry to the shows are critical for a good day of shows. Fill your belly well in the morning and graze all day during the shows. I think everyone makes the mistake thinking they will go back to camp later in the day to eat or cook and it just does not happen once the shows start. After we leave camp everyone is on thier own to feed themselves the rest of the day. This will be my 6th roo and this plan has worked well for me over the years.
But I am a lacto/ovo veg...will I be able to enjoy anything from the buffet?
Or will I have to hop to Centeroo to score some veggie meals?
you are out of luck pretty much. They had salad, and corn, and salad. Did I mention they had corn? Otherwise, meat and potatoes..... and corn...and I mean real corn ;D

Hey guys I'm from out of the country and I'm just wondering if Krogers Grocery sells beer/liquor??? Thanks ;D
Kroger should sell beer, I don't know about liquor though. I'm not 21 so I don't pay that much attention, but I know that the wal-mart in town sells beer. I've seen liquor in gas stations in Louisiana, but I'm not sure if they do that in TN. (I'm from Mississippi)

I'm from Michigan and our Kroger just started selling liquor. But you could always post in the helping hands thread and someone will be able to help you out if need be!
HaHa, I almost posted on a thread I already posted on the other day. I spent like 10 minutes writing my response, then I had problems with sending my reply, and then I had to reboot computer(routine updates related). When I came back to the thread, I went to the last page, and I noticed I already posted two days ago. I was responding to the first page, not the last comment.
But bring fruit. By Sunday last year, I would have killed for an apple
^This
We just bring fruit and fruitcups since they are easily stored in your camelback. Chewy bars and powdered gatorade. Friday and Monday morning we made pancakes for the camps that was up early enough Was way too hot last year to cook any later in the day. Plus The smell of the lamb from the gyro hut was too much

This is the first roo for me and my roommate, we were planning on making burgers before we left and keeping them in a cooler then we would grill them on our camp grill. They would be delicious and also give us something to barter with, for some reason we are both excited to barter. We're also bringing snacks, tons of snacks. We're going to freeze 2 cases of water, the 1liter bottles, to keep our cooler cold. I'm sure it will be an abysmal failure, but that's how you learn right?

My chums and I brought stuff to grill back in Aught Nine. All Roo veterans, though, so it helped that we knew enough to not bring too much. All we really cooked at camp was breakfast. Rest of the time, and this is corroborated by many here, mainly snacking and maybe a slice of Spicy Pie or arepas in Centeroo.
This is going to be my 2nd roo, first in VIP. my first roo was in GA, and we had plenty of room for everything, able to set up 3 tents and a 10x10 canopy (not all are so lucky) and we also brought a ton of food. I was planning on being the 'master chef' while there, pre-seasoned and portioned burgers, chicken, ka-bobs, steaks, breakfest foods. None that we really ate though, when I cooked, it was usually late in the night/early morning (like 2-3am) and because I heard my neighbors, who happened to be 7 people in a suburban with 2 tents, 1st timers also, no money for food and we had tons, so I would feed them. I think I made food for my camp like once. I felt like I could have saved a lot of trouble with 'planning' on what to cook, and just buying food there. Its not that expensive and yes, all these post talking about fruit and juice, listen to them, I wish I would have read this before I went last year.
This year I'm going VIP so I do plan on cooking at least a little, just because I'm so much closer and it will be a lot easier to swing by camp and whip up something. Also I've read a lot of posts on here and hope to run into some other chef's and possibly trade or sample our cookings, can't wait!
