Last year was my first b-roo and I was far too inexperienced to get out unscathed. I got sick a few days into it due to many factors.
1. Colder as I'll get out at night! I was so unprepared for the cold, those hot Tennessee days are so deceiving!! All I had to cover up with at night was one of those little f**kin tin foil emergency blanket things and a beach float to sleep on. I didnt think id need any pants for the occassion either....please dont make the same mistake. You dont want icicles for legs at night.
2. Holy Dust Batman! Last year there was a huge dust problem. It was everywhere. I dont know how the dust factor is every year but defiently bring a bandana or something to cover up with cause that stuff dried me up like the Sahara and I was hacking up what apeared to be black chunks of my own windpipe for at least a week afterwards.
3. Bring meds and pace yourself. I was stupid and didnt bring any of my best friend... Nyquil! Who needs health insurance when you have that stuff?? Please bring something to dull symptoms so you can at least enjoy yourself in the short term.
I was also stupid by partying too much in the morning instead of napping and relaxing. I was tired by like 5 or 6 p.m. forcing myself to stay up for the late night acts. But this depends on your stamina. DEFIENTLY gauge yourself before roo by partying continually for one weekend and see how you feel going to work monday morning. That should be a good indicator.
Despite all this It was still one of the coolest experiences and I dont regret a minute of it. I probably left some stuff out, so please feel free to add to the list.
The dust was definitely a huge issue last year. I had my shirt up over my mouth walking through Centeroo, especially Sunday before The White Stripes. The scenesters got MAJOR use from their bandanas. I'll most definitely be donning a bandana around the neck (face when walking) this year.
Drink water. A ton of water. LOTS of water. Dehydration can hit you pretty quickly, under the hot sun. Keep some Gatorade (or other similar drink) available at your campsite, at the very least. Even better if you can bring some of the small bottles with you, into Centeroo. Keeping a wet bandana around your neck also helps keep your body temp normalized. Water spritzers (with or without the personal fan option) are also awesome.
Neutrogena cool spray sunblock is amazingly great. Dirt and conventional sunblock lotion just doesn't mix. Spraying on sunblock will help you from feeling the misery, pain and sometimes nausea of sunburn. That particular spray also contains a cooling mixture. It's wonderful. And no need to rub it into your dusty, dirty skin.
Make good use of hand sanitizer. Particularly when you have to deal with the porta-potties. Germs abound, in there. Clorox wipes are also excellent to have with you to wipe down anything inside the "facilities" you are loathe to touch.
What is a scenester??? Just wondering - maybe I could be accused of being one - I wore a bandana every day at roo - on my head to cover my hair and keep me from getting my scalp sunburned - I don't wear a bandana any other time of the year - does that make me a scenester???

haha...it always makes me laugh when people say that TN is REALLY hot. i was born and raised in a state where anything under a 100* in the summer is a relief!! ACL on sunday in 05 was 107*.
however, water is STILL necessity!!! i brought my camelbak and two nalgene bottles to fill up.
i like the idea of bringing maybe some anti-histamines if you're prone to allergies, or maybe that airborn stuff.
The dust really made my seasonal allergies flare up - if you have any slight allergies to dust, mold, grasses be sure to bring your Claritin/Benadryl, etc.
A random note - I wore my contacts the whole time; if you wear contacts be sure to have plenty of things to properly clean your face and hands before meddling with them. Would really suck to get an eye infection at Bonnaroo! Also bring a spare pair of glasses because if the dust gets bad or you do get infected, you can at least still see

i didn't get sick until we came home...i had a severe sinus infection...they said it was caused by allergies(this was new to me, considering ive never been told i had them) so im getting some clariton clear...
water, water, water and water...last year, i felt like crap on saturday. i thought i was gonna die...i went to centeroo, sat there for a half hour, felt like i was gonna pass out, and went back to the tent with a friend...i ended up downing two bottles of water in like a minute and ended up sleeping for 4 hours...

anyone ever use that 5 hour energy stuff they are always advertising on tv?
Yes! Those are great! But they are 4 bucks a shot so I only use them when I need a burst of energy.
But... that's not gonna prevent sickness.
I did not get sick at all but my sister came down with a respiratory illeness as soon as she got home. I credit my not getting sick with drinking a ton of water. I chugged it every chance I got and I did it when it was not ice cold water but room temperature so I can drink alot of it and quickly rather than just little sips. I probably drank about a gallon a day. I didn't hardly have to pee either. I was so full of water that I wasn't hardly hungry and I had all this wonderful beer and wine that I could hardly consume because I drank so much water.

The dust problem last year was mainly due to the severe drought. It's never been that bad before. If you notice, a lot of night pictures look like its' snowing because the dust was so bad. I'm bringing dust masks this year just in case.
i think i was one of the only people who didnt have major problems with dust last year... yes i noticed the giant cloud during the police, but it didnt make me sick or cough or anything like that. i didnt even know it was a problem until i heard other people complaning about it when i joined inforoo a few months ago. the worst i got was swollen feet

I'd say my kit for healthy living at Bonnaroo is excessive amounts of water (you lose a LOT more water than you think, especially if consuming any diuretic substances [alcohol, caffeine, etc.]), a bandanas, making sure to carry a small snack around just in case, some pain reliever (I'm partial to naproxen myself for body pain, and good ol' ibuprofen for a headache), and also some purple drank comes in handy. Basically, a small first aid kit is really handy to have, with a couple medicines and bandaids etc. Its important to remember that, even though you are camping on a farm for 4 days, that is no reason not to use basic hygiene. Of course, you can always wear a space suit, but I imagine they are expensive... ;D
My husbby used his Neti pot after Bonnaroo and didn't get sick while I had flu-like symptoms for a week. Good call pavoroyale!
Just don't put coffee or single malt scotch in your neti-pot. It says on wikipedia that people in India use neti-pots every day, just like brushing your teeth is over here. I wonder if Indian people think that we have really stinky noses?

Bandanas are crucial. If it's dusty, you have a good health mask. When it's hot during the day, you can keep a few bandanas in your cooler so you can have a nice ice hat whenever you want. If giant spiders attack bonnaroo, you can make a quick makeshift sling out of your bandana and your belt and/or suspenders.
anyways... a good tip for health.... spend some time in the heat before bonnaroo - take a bike ride in the mid day heat for about an hour. that is not even close to how bad bonnaroo could be.
hippienaustin - said you were used to the heat from Texas... well, i've lived in Tennessee and Texas, and 100 degrees in Texas is not even close to being as bad as the 88 degrees, 97 percent humidity Tennessee heatwaves. ROO in 06 was the most mild yet!
