I was dissappointed not to see any Hip-Hop announced today and really hope that they follow the pattern of the last two years and have at least one major Hip-Hop act.
I had a blast at the Roots last year and could kick myself for missing J5 and especially Blackalicious in 2002. I hadn't yet discoverd the Blackalicious album BLAZING ARROW in 2002 and it has since become one of my favorite albums and has really increased the respect I have for the potential of good Hip-Hop.
I caught Blackalicious' label-mate Lyrics Born in Chicago last week and the show was A BLAST. LB is an incredibly gifted individual and believe me when I say his show would fit right in at Bonnaroo. I've heard some mixed reviews of Blackalicious live performances but I'll be seeing them for the first time in few weeks on the Quannum World Tour which also features Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow and others. Check out this show if it comes through your town and you'll agree with me that LB needs to be at Bonnaroo (tour dates at Quannum.com). I'm expecting the rest of the Quannam crew to blow me away but I can't vouch for their live show until April 10!
Did anyone catch Blackalicious at Bonnaroo 2002 (or elsewhere)?
What do you all think of Hip-Hop at Bonnaroo (I expect there may be some differences of opinion on this)?
I would love to see some hip-hop at the Bonnaroo this year. Black Eyed Peas, Talib Kweli and Spearhead come to mind as artists that would bring something new to the ears of the Bonnaroo crowd.
Roo definitely needs some hip hop...I wouldn't mind seeing anyone from Rhymesayers (Atmosphere, Eyedea & Abilities, Brother Ali). Aesop Rock would be awesome too. Just saw the Roots and Atmosphere in Minneapolis about a month ago. Awesome show. I've never heard Leroy Smokes, but heard lots of good things. Heading up to Juliapalooza in St. Cloud, MN in May. Sounds like there will be a lot of good hip hop up there.
I have noticed alot of acts on this years roster rolled over from last years non-existing Bonnaroo NE. If you cross your fingers, we might see Talib Kweli and/or Common since they bother were to play it last year.
Getting off topic a bit, Rusted Root and Dirty Dozen Brass Band were one the rosters for NE.They could possibly be one of the bands playing.
Sometimes good acts go mainstream... Don't really llike the addition of Fergie, but they're earlier stuff was good. I can only hope they come to their senses and fall out of the lime light soon.
I think I may have stated this fact somewhere else either on this board or on the listserv... but as far as hip hop it is very likely that it would be added later as most hip hop acts do not make tour plans very far ahead like most jam/funk/anything else bands. Soooo... there is plenty of hope for dj's and hip hop acts yet!!
FEAR NOT HIP HOP FANS! Rest assured that Superfly will work some phat magic for us all!!! ;D ;D ;D
Just caught the Quannum World 2004 tour with Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, Maroon, and DJ Shadow on the ones and twos. They tore up DC. It was a hell of a show would love to see any or all be at the Roo.
What about the LL crew? Living Legends would be a BOMB addition. Grouch, MURS, Aesop (not Bazookatooth), Scarub, etc...Living legends would fit right in at the 'Roo.

I caught this show in Chicago and had a great time. Any of these performers would be great but I think Lyrics Born would fit in most naturally at Bonnaroo. I actually enjoyed his solo show in March more than the Quannum tour show, but that was due to sound/venue/crowd issues, not the performances. I just think his broad, emphatic, varied style and his incorporation of Joyo Velarde makes his show translate better to a live environment and a larger venue than many other varieties of hip-hop.
On record, Gift is my #1 man, but LB's stage presence makes him my favorite live performer in Hip-Hop (not that I have a whole lot of experience with it).
I was also pleasantly surprised by Lifesavas. I really like their album but was surprised by how well they acquited themselves on such a packed bill. I have to admit I had Versatyl and Jumbo backwards in my mind from the pictures on the CD cover. Jumbo is the smaller guy?!
A lot of the crowd in Chicago was there for DJ Shadow and was disappointed he didn't get more of a solo spotlight.
In any case, check out Quannum World if they come to your town and please get some hip-hop (any hip-hop) on the bill at Bonnaroo!
Sorry to kill your hopes, Pat, but DeSol is a real group out of NJ I believe. I am not sure what they play, but I have noticed that they are playing the Great Bamboozle Fest the week before Roo.
agreed Lyrics Born tore it up. Gift's mic was turned too low but I love him too...You are right though LB would be the man at Roo..Woke up in the middle of the night cold sweat.
DJ Shadow did a 20 min solo thang that I thought almost stole the show. It was breathtaking

Wow. The crowd in Chicago was literally begging for that and it didn't happen. I wonder if they worked that in due to crowd response. I could understand the crowd's disappointment because in Chicago it was marketed in some places as a DJ Shadow show (that's how Ticketmaster listed it when I purchased my tix). The strange thing is that DJ D-Sharp and Rev. Shines each got little mini-sets warming the crowd up at the start of the show, but Xcel and Shadow never really got the spotlight (except for a brief break here and there). Definitely nothing close to 20 minutes or even song-length. I actually haven't listened to any solo Shadow stuff but I mean to. Someone on these boards mentioned Endtroducing as a good intro, so I've got that on my shopping list.
I have REALLY enjoyed DJ D-Sharp's warm-up spots at the Quannum show and the LB show and I also love his Quannum mix tape.
