I made a quick 2006 mix for some folks recently. I doubled up some of the artists just to emphasize ones I thought the specific recipients might enjoy. It's definitely not supposed to be all encompassing or incredibly diverse, but it's fun enough...

So, for the last few weeks, I've just read and have not posted or even registere. This post got me to register and well post myself. Everyyear I make Bonnaroo Music Preview disc for those coming down to Roo. Usually have a new group every year anyhow, plus I can listen and do research on all the bands there. I always try to use all the bands and well make a four-five cd set. I also try to group them in somewhat of genres or theme, last year being food (Funky Stew Preview, More then Leftovers, and how long has that been in there...a cd containing the older acts from Roo...
This Year...Its the Seasons.
The Sound of Spring 2006 Donovan Frankenrieter, Magic Numbers, Mike Doughty, MMJ, Radiohead, Death Cab, Stephen MalKmus, Devendra BanHart Band, Marah, Dios (malos) Gomez, BluesTravelers, Bright Eyes, Jackie Green, Beck, Robert Randolph, Oysterhead, and Ben Folds.....
No Bummer Summer Rebirth Brass Band, Tom Petty, Grace Potter, GLove, MMW, Soulive, Rusted Root, Steel Pulse, Damian Marley, Atmosphere, Cat Empire, Amadou & Mariam, Umphrey's Mcgee, Tobab Krewe, and Disco Biscuits.
The Fall of Funk and Bluegrass in Winter Steve Earl, Shooter Jennings, Son Volt, Elvis Costello, Steel Train, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, Betty Levette, Neville Bros. Bonnie Raitt, Robinella I-Nine, Nickle Creek, Ricky Skaggs KT, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and Bill Frissell.
And finally, the fourth will be made of the artist leftover, and those that get added, plus some comedy....
No Reason for the Seasons Andrew Bird, Seu Jorge, Les Claypool, Devotchka, Moe. Dungen, CYHSY, Phil lesh, Cat Power, Dresden Dolls, Motet, Baltan Beatbox and DJ Sasha with of course Bob Schnieder and Lewis Black...only slipped artist I know of...
As you can tell I love music, and Bonnaroo, and well my friends. I give them these disc, about every three weeks up until roo, so they can get a chance to hear some new music, and perhaps confirm on some acts they already were seeing. It's a great way to get informed, but also, You know what your missing when your at roo with all the stages.
If anyone would like to trade, or want a copy of my mix tapes, I don't mind sharing..... I'm Jmannwo from JamForum bands, and I'm addicted Roo.....
Bumping this because I'd really like to listen to some of the artists I don't know so much about while I'm at work. Especially since the jukebox is broken!

I don't know if most of you are against i-pods or not, dont really care. just thought i would put this out there for anyone who has one. If you have one, erase all the music on it, put only artists playing at Roo that you want to listen to, and just put it on shuffle whenever your listening to it. It will give you a great mix and idea of what the music selection is going to be like at Roo.

well, if you go to the play list on itunes, and place the order of songs by song title, or time, the songs will be shuffled around, and, itll mirror it on your ipod.
No 2006 Pre-Bonnaroo mix is complete without the following:
I Want To Get With You, And Your Sister.......I Think Her Name is Deborah (Beck)
Agreed, except it's spelled Debra (that's how my wife spells it and she loves that he spells it "right").
I've been pretty obsessed with building my Bonnaroo playlist on my mp3 player since the lineup announcement. I'm around 900 songs and 60 artists now. I love when a song comes up on shuffle and I can't quite place who it is, and then I am surprised/impressed when I figured it out. This has happened a lot with some of the Beck stuff from Sea Change, and happened today with the Umphrey's song Bullhead City. I also love things like the live and studio versions of Morning Bell coming up back to back, so you can compare how different but equally great they are.
I've got my Bonnaroo playlist up to 1100+ songs now, and never seem to tire of listening to it.
Songs that will be on my next Bonnaroo mix that I've gotten into or have been added since I made the mix I posted above:
Gomez - Nothing Is Wrong Devandra Banhart - Chinese Children Blackalicious - Do This My Way, Aural Pleasure, World of Vibrations, Power Cypress Hill - Hits From the Bong! Shooter Jennings - Southern Comfort Refugee All Stars - Living Like a Refugee

I don't know about any of you guys but a good friend of mine was listening to David Bowie on the way to a Bowie concert and it got cancelled. I've also found that listening to a band on the way to the show is a good way to curse the show or ruin whatever songs you are excited to hear.
Don't get me wrong I will definitely make a roo mix in the near future for listening to all summer before the show, but I think something that would be pretty sweet would be to make a mix of all artists that won't be at roo, or to listen only to artists that won't be there on your way down. This way you get to listen to all your favorite artists in the week, including those that won't be in Tennessee and it will also get you even more excited to see live those that will be there.
If somebody could load some Bonnaroo mixes on rapidshare or make a torrent or something today, that would be most awesome. Or if somebody could send some stuff my way via Yahoo or AIM, that would be awesome, too! I'll be online all day w/ broadband!

i hear ya doobie dewey. i try to never listen to a particular band on the way to the show. i think its bad luck for sure.
but getting familiar with a band is a good thing. i, for one, think The Motet is awesome. ive gotten familiar with a few of their songs and i want to be a "regular fan" but the time i see them. its a lot of work, but i want to start to do this with other bands as well. one at a time, preferably.
but its just so hard cuz im going to Gathering of the Vibes and Strange-Creek this year in addition to Bonnaroo so ive got a lot of bands to catch up on.
Yeah my Bonnaroo 2006 Playlist is at 979 (heaven help it if they do add Pearl Jam).
A mix I did recently: (title, artist, album) 1. Pencil Rot, Stephen Malkmus, Face The Truth 2. Powers, Blackalicious, The Craft 3. Kissed By Lightning, deadboy & the Elephantmen, We Are Night Sky 4. I Will Follow You Into the Dark, Death Cab For Cutie, Plans (Bonus Video Version) 8. Our Love, Donavon Frankenreiter, Donavon Frankenreiter 9. All This Useless Beauty, Elvis Costello, Live From 6A: Great Musical Performances From "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" 10. Baby's Got Sauce, G. Love & Special Sauce, The Best of G. Love and Special Sauce 11. Get Myself Arrested, Gomez, Bring It On 12. First Time I Met The Blues, Buddy Guy, Martin Scorsese Presents: The Blues (Disc 3) 13. Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well, Mike Doughty, 2004-06-11 Bonnaroo 14. Mr. Oysterhead, Oysterhead, The Grand Pecking Order 15. Chapel Hill, Sonic Youth, Dirty 16. Afterglow 61 (Live), Son Volt, The Target Red Room Vol. 4 17. I Might Be Wrong, Radiohead, I Might Be Wrong Live Recordings 18. Don't Come Around Here No More, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Anthology - Through the Years
Here's a short mix I made for the three cars I'll be travelling with to be played on the stretch run (probably once we hit Nashville):
Tennessee-Arrested Development Tennessee Jed - Phil & Friends w/ Bobby (Bonnaroo '02) Southern Comfort - Shooter Jennings National Anthem (live) - Radiohead Callin' Out - Lyrics Born I Wanna Get High - Cypress Hill I Feel Just Like a Child - Devandra Banhart Hell Yes - Beck Make Ya Feel That Way - Blackalicious O Samba Tai - Seu Jorge Desitively Bonnaroo - Dr. John
I actually burned everyone in my group three more CDs, one each for Friday, Saturday and Sunday artists, but I can't figure out how to copy and paste the playlists from my media player and don't feel like typing them out.

Fuck me, but these are some beautiful mixes. I was already feeling overwhelmed & underprepared with not knowing enough songs from all the peops playing, and this just added to my delightful misery. I have some Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, Streets, Devandra Banhart, & Matisyahu in rotation on my MP3 player right now, but y'all are taking this to another level.
Thanks for all the props to Tennessee with the AD & GD songs, too. We locals look forward to welcoming y'all home.

Not being really familiar with all of the artists just leaves room for more exploring of various stages, which is probably the most fun activity at Bonnaroo!
I made a 6+ hour playlist for the drive from St. Louis to Manchester that covers an awful lot of the lineup with focuses on the faves of course. It's made up of past Roo artists and current Roo artists, and a handful of stuff that I've been digging on as of late and might sound good on the car ride...we'll call them...future Roo artists.
