I disagree, family has a very valid point. It was the jamband community that put Bonnaroo on the map in the first place. While adding new bands to the mix keeps things interesting, I will be very disappointed if Superfly has chosen not to feature any jam-related artists...
BTW - a quick search on eBay turned up a "Radiohead Amnesiac KID-A Stainless Steel Wrist Watch" along with other assorted merch crap...
Okay, see, this is a fair way to say this.
I would be really surprised, though, if there were no jam band types at all -- or even if they weren't very prominent.
and, yeah, I'm sure that there is plenty of radiohead merch....I guess where I was coming from with that was more about how they seem to be constantly evolving as a band, whereas what I know of the Grateful Dead all sounds pretty much the same (Dave Matthews too, although I'll admit I'm less familiar with him or DMB) -- but in all fairness, I did bring up the merchandise, so I'll have to concede a little on that (Only a little though because I still think the variety of Grateful Dead stuff is a little outrageous).
The Grateful Dead merchandise you speak of came into existance after Jerry's estate was plundered by greedy self-seekers. Read up befiore you post outlandish claims.

How is this related to anything?
They're one of the biggest bands in the world, with a rabid fanbase, not unlike a lot of jam bands. Of course people are going to try and put their name on crap to sell it. They're viciously picky about what they get involved in. It's not like they're the ones selling bootleg watches.
I doubt Phish is responsible for the bowls with their name on them on eBay.
That doesn't mean the other bands that there didn't draw people to the festival.
If it is all about drawing people, then it is all about selling out. (See we have come full circle to my original point, nice work)
you were talking about the festival drawing a certain kind of person from the beginning; I was saying that from the beginning they have been drawing people who enjoy different types of music....what I said didn't have anything to do with selling out....especially because I was talking about who they were drawing all along

We are talking about percentages. I am sure 1% of the crowd was brought in last year by Particle, but that does not mean you should headline them.

I cant imagine how sad it would be to actually encounter someone like family at Bonnaroo. All he does is whine about bands that arent 'jam'...and he doesnt stop.
My girl 'allows' me to listen to it a lot. So I guess I am quite familiar.
I ask because while I'd heard a lot of these "jam" bands in the past, I'd never really taken the time to pursue an album or boot that might appeal to me. I just dismissed Phish, Panic, and their peers as musical masturbation playing to a sea of unbathed idiots who aren't there for the music. Guess what...I was wrong! I've slowly but surely picked at Phil Lesh, Tea Leaf Green, Phish, and Panic. I've come to find something I enjoy about all of them. I certainly wouldn't have if I had stuck with my previous mindset.
Radiohead are our generation's Pink Floyd (in terms of innovation, not always sound) whether you like it or not. You should listen a little closer sometime and open up your doors a bit, mang!

More irony here.
Bonaroo is about JAM BANDS. Everything has it's place and that is the entire basis of what I am saying here.

Bonnaroo is about MUSIC and COMMUNITY and FUN. Maybe Bonnaroo is about jam bands to you, but that seems like a pretty limited perspective to me.
How did I attack any of you? By saying a band sucks?
I think you are a litttle to wrapped up in this message board.
The problem is you started a thread complaining about how horrible it is that these bands might be headlining. I, for one, really like Radiohead; and I like Beck even better. So, when you come out acting like these musicians, who I happen to think are great musicians, are going to "ruin" a music festival, I find that a little ridiculous. And you can say again that Bonnaroo is about jam bands if you want; I still believe it is about music.
And, for the record, except for saying that I think the word alternative is generic and dated, I don't think I've made any personal attacks; unlike you, who just accused us all of being wrapped up in a message board.

Beck and Radiohead do not belong headlining Bonnaroo.
I did not reference you being wrapped up in anything.
You want to change bonnaroo to have YOUR favorite bands, I want it left as it always has been out of respect to those who made it what it is today.
You disrespect the jam band community in your earlier posts and that in itself tells me where you stand.
Beck, Radiohead and Tom Petty are STUDIO BANDS. That is the issue.
Why not just call up the Three Six MAfia? They could headline by your criteria:
They will draw a crowd/sell tickets. They are 'different'
lmao....yeah, everything should always stay exactly the same, shouldn't it.....life's just better that way. It's not like there aren't going to be plenty of jam bands there.

I'm done
Why do we not put chocolate pudding on hamburgers?
I am quoting you here:
"everything should always stay exactly the same, shouldn't it.....life's just better that way."
I'm not personally worried about the headliners I mean if they end up being those three which what I've seen they will be. If you don't like them take a nap go eat or something get ready for the late night sets or go to the cinema tent.
I don't think they are ruining Bonnaroo at all. I will be absolutely thrilled if the rumors on Wikipedia are true, but I'm waiting for the announcement in any case.
I've been to Bonnaroo every year, and I find it downright freaky how the kinds of acts that Superfly books has changed completely in step with my musical tastes. Part of that is because Bonnaroo plays a big role in shaping my musical tastes by exposing me to new bands, but it definitely goes in the other direction to.
Things change. There are many, many jamband focused festivals (Bonnaroo played a significant role in the growth of the festival circuit) if you don't like the other kinds of stuff they book for Bonnaroo.
The title of who is "headlining" is absolutely meaningless to me. The late-night tents have always been the "main event" for me and their choices there have been impecible.
