I think the new album is great. I've always liked them, but they were very mellow, this new album brings a little rock and more uptemponess. The island:come and see...... is an awesome song, one of the best singles of the the year.

They put on a wicked show with tons of energy and crowd interaction. Seriously, capable of a Thursday night set. Like DeVotchka last year.
they are too big for a thursday set...
I disagree. The Crane Wife was a step towards mass appeal. And, truth told, their complete body of work is consistantly good. But even as a fan, I find the Decemberists to be an acquired taste. I appreciate the musical taste of many friends, and none of them dig Decemberists... But the show will win some people over, man. Without a big act on Thursday, they could be the highlight.
Decemberists are too big for a Thursday night act for sure. They sold out teh Tabernacle last time they were here. I just got tickets for the show in April on Friday. They're a 2nd or 3rd headliner at Coachella (as in they get their name in big letters on the poster), they are definitely not a Thursday act.

Gotta agree. No way could the Decemberists play a Thursday night slot. way too big. I'm thinking it's more likely they'd be in the Friday afternoon slot Death Cab filled last year on the Which Stage.
By the way, I'm totally biased because they are probably one of my top three favorite bands.

I'm surprised that ya'll think the decemberists are so big. At the two festivals I've seen them at they've been early day slots way before the headliners. And as far as their live performance goes, I'd say average. I could definately see how they would be an acquired taste tho.

Who all has seen them, because from the clips i've seen i'd have to agree their shows seem just average. I'd probably check them out if they played, but from what i've seen i much prefer their studio stuff.
not sure why playing Thursday is considered an insult to the band. Don't forget that Thursday is an official day now. Having a couple solid bands that day is big for Roo - the earlier folks get there, the higher the concession revenues.

Yeah, ^ but theres a lot of people who wont be able to get there thursday night, so i doubt they're gonna be scheduling anyone too big. I think they're gonna schedule thursday the same way they have the past few years.

I've seen them 3 times, and will see them for a fourth time in April. They put on a very energetic and fun live show. They sort of have the same stage presence as Ben Folds where they joke around and don't take things too serisouly. They sound very good live and are really into crowd participation, with either the Mariner's Revenge Song or something like 16 Military Wives. Also, I know they have had guests before, including Ryan Adams, perhaps he would make an appeaance. Give them a shot, they are a fun time and very talented musicians. Plus they can jam more than people think. Seeing something like the Tain, which is a 20 minute song live, is absolutely mind-blowing.

I'd say they're a Bright Eyes-sized group. They don't yet have a fanbase as big as Death Cab, but its pretty sizeable. As for their live show, I've seen them twice and both shows rank among the most fun concerts I've been to. The Mariner's Revenge Song is amazing live, and I think they'd fit in perfectly at Bonnaroo. Maybe they'll be in the Bright Eyes slot with The Shins filling the Death Cab slot?
Like keyzersoze said, the Bright Eyes slot would be about right for them. They've developed serious recognition over the past two albums, made a lot of year end lists, and have a rabid fanbase. So really, as it has been said, it's not in Roo's best interest to schedule a pretty big draw on Thursday -- it could really lead to some unhappy concertgoers. Unless they're really going to have a full Thursday this year, I'm sure it will remain the same it has been: lesser known bands with a bit of hype behind them.
