Listening to nothing but all three Mars Volta releases lately. There is a great line in Noel Murray's Onion review of Frances the Mute that I think hits the nail on the head:
I live down the street from the Empty Bottle. Give me some advanced notice next time and I'll meet you there!
It really was a great show. Their somewhat fragile vocals seemed a bit muted at times, but other than that, they were very tight. The openers Apostle of Hustle almost trumped them and I was pleasantly surprised. Along with Stars, it's another band tied in with the Broken Social Scene collective. The lead dude from BSS is the main man in Apostle of Hustle and I didn't know that until they hit the stage. They incorporated some great horns and a flamenco dancer with tap shoes, who also acted as a multi-instrumentalist. Awesomeness I tell ya.
I hit the Bottle relatively often, so next time I'm running through I'll let you know. M83, Animal Collective, and Death From Above 1979 are all in my sights for April.
Just picked up Mr. Lif's I Phantom and absolutely love it. It's political, formally inventive, intelligent, funny and touching. The beats and music are a little retro but very tight, and Lif can flow. I am eagerly awaiting the Perceptionists album next Tuesday and their set at Bonnaroo.
While I am very excited to see several hip-hop acts on the bill and very well might catch them all, I think the Perceptionists might be the one I'm most excited for.
Just picked up Beck's new album, Guero. I'm listening to it right now for the first time. It's definately Beck. Lines like "cliche wasted hate taste tested" and "code red cola war conformity crisis" make me smile. I like.
It's derivative of many of the other more critically acclaimed bands of that NY revival scene like the Strokes, Interpol, and the Killers (ok, so the Killers aren't from NY, but they stole their Vegas synths). There's also a serious Cure influence on the record to boot. Still, upon first lunchtime listen, this wasn't too bad. I think it will be worth the $6.99 Best Buy was offering it for. While the aforementioned bands have carved out a sound of their own though, the Bravery are still working on it.
EDIT: I also want to express my love for Louis XIV...
rock needed a good dose of sleazy glam and we got it!
kings of convenience-riot on an empty street Billy Bragg and Wilco-Mermaid Ave. vol. 2 MMW-Party for the End of the World (Just in Case) and of course..... Beck-Guero
All these albums are quality in my judgement. Kings of Convenience has suprised me at how frickin good it is. I never heard them, just of them, and bought it and loved it. The Mermaid Ave. disc, I really like on the songs that Tweedy sings. To anyone who's heard Vol. 1, how does it compare to Vol. 2? MMW is always quality. And Beck should win a grammy for his new album. Can't wait for the tour, which I've heard is starting in July. Also can't wait for the new NIN disc. Some hardcore rockin is in order.
The Kings of Convenience are great. I saw them at Schuba's here in Chicago earlier this year and they played a gorgeous little set. Danbird -- Volume 1 is superior to Volume 2 in the Mermaid Avenue series. It has a few stone cold classics on it and is more fun all around.
[glow=BLUE,2,300]RYAN ADAMS//DRIVE BY TRUCKERS TEENAGE FANCLUB//NEW ORDER[/glow]
The new Ryan Adams is his best since Heartbreaker.
The new Nine Inch Nails. I love it. There probably aren't a whole hord of fans here, but Reznor has put out another stellar album. I can't wait till the fall arena tour. I just realized that there's alot of things I can't wait for. But I always do.
Iron & Wine - Woman King EP Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams
These two I picked up on my trip. I kept looking for the Heartless Bastards at all the record stores in Seattle, and it was sold out everywhere, so I got Iron & Wine instead. I like it alot. I just want more. I have to listen to it twice in a row to get my fill. The Jack Johnson album I got after my cousin that got married, played it at a party and also had a song from it, in thier wedding. There ain't a bad song on there. Much better than his last one IMHO.
I keep coming back to the new Ryan Adams...regardless of a couple really corny tunes and some typical cringe worthy lyrics here and there, it's pretty fuc*ing solid. He does the Grateful Dead pose pretty well on a couple tracks. Like most of his work, I know I shouldn't like it so much, but I do, and I won't try to hide it.
"While I am very excited to see several hip-hop acts on the bill and very well might catch them all, I think the Perceptionists might be the one I'm most excited for. "
Ka: We host allot of hip hop shows here in ALBANY<NY and we had the preceptionist come in twice for a show...and they def. do there thang...allot of energy....
I would love to hold on long enough to see De La Soul....
Yo cheese man! The new Secret Machines EP, that includes a few interesting cover songs, comes out tomorrow...
1. Road Leads Where It's Led 2. Better Bring Your Friends 3. Astral Weeks 4. Money (That's What I Thought) 5. Girl From the North Country 6. De Luxe (Immer Wieder)
Also, the new Coldplay and White Stripes which should be good for the ride down to Manchester.
Just got the new White Stripes. Very different, but very good. Jack has traded in his boot stomping blues for some soulful piano ballads. There's still his trademark wailing guitar on a few songs, but this album seems much more stripped down(if that's possible). I like it. Waiting for some East Coast dates to get my Stripes on.
Anyone get the new Coldplay? I'm wondering how it sounds. I only had enough money for one new release this week, The White Stripes won out.

Iv been listenin to The Shantee lately, theyr a somewhat local band, so i get a chance to see them a lot. Pretty good stuff, they have some of their shows on archive.org if interested.
If anyone hasn't heard of these guys, which I'm betting is the case with most, give em a shot. Very tasty soothing pop melodies. Alot of thier stuff sounds like a good Simon & Garfunkel song. They are on Sub Pop records, which is also The Shins label. If you like The Shins, you'll love these guys, I promise. If you don't, then you can say I'm an @sshole who doesn't know what he's talking about.
Devin Davis -- Hmmm, I've only given it a couple listens, so we'll see. Good power pop, but a little grating at times.
The Most Serene Republic -- I think I like this a whole lot. Definitely share labelmates' Broken Social Scene's quirkiness. Like just about every review has pointed out, they come off like a more ambitious Postal Service.
Andrew Bird -- I never was a huge fan of his earlier stuff. This though, is spectacular. A top five worthy record.
Also:
Archer Prewitt -- A little samey on the first time through. Something tells me I should stick with this one though.
I LOVE this album. I really liked thier last album. The first listen through with this one, I still thought thier last one was better. I now think otherwise. I feel the same way about these guys as when I first heard The Shins. I just couldn't believe how beautiful it all sounded, and that they weren't insanely famous because of it. This is the same way. It just grows and grows on you, until you have to pry yourself away, to listen to something else. I wake up humming thier tunes pretty much every morning. They're on tour right now too. I'm thinking I might just have to go catch them up in NYC. Check em out. DO IT!!! NOW!!!
