we've seen the evolution of bonnaroo over the past few years, but we have never had a lineup without representation from the dead and phish. weir checks off the dead for this year, but still no phish. a page add seems likely because of the new album, but as each day goes by it seems more and more likely that were looking at a phishless bonnaroo...what do you guys think?
"We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, movie gods, and rock stars. But we wont, and we're slowly learning that fact & we're very, very pissed off......."
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
If we're lucky the next addition will look something like this
Page McConnell The Arcade Fire Air Amon Tobin The Disco Biscuits
so far we haven't been very lucky though (with additions I mean)
there are definitely 5-6 spots left open. if you look at my schedule on the schedule-ology thread, i think i have everyone that has been announced in a slot and it leaves that many slots with no one in them. but i don't think any of them will be big names.

That's pretty much how I feel. But I'm also very confident in saying (As much as I freakin love Les Claypool and will NEVER stop listening to him.) Les won't be there.
also, FWIW, many people don't realize this but Bonnaroo is modeled after the large phish festivals of the late 90s. The people who worked behind the scenes in the Phish organization to pull those festivals off are the same people who work to pull off Bonnaroo. Part of the reason Bonnaroo has been so successful, is b/c phish had so much success with their festivals allowing Bonnaroo to use the mold.
get over it gouge. so the math is a little fuzzy. i went to 50 phish shows and a 100 dead shows. i am ready for bigger and better. i get the festival thing. and memo phish didnt invent the festival. nor is bonnaroo modeled after it. unless of course phish made it to woodstock the first one. oh i was there also.
5 years after phish ended I certainly hope we are finally without phish.
thats harsh to say. we all know the world isnt the same without some phish in it. i know for myself its nice to see the boys in their projects when i can. man i miss them.
get over it? It hasn't even been 3 years, and you just said it's been 5 years? That's pretty basic math right there. I'm sorry for pointing out that you were wrong if it angers you so much.
I realize phish didn't invent festivals, but Bonnaroo is most certainly modeled after the phish fests of the late 90s. The incorporation of Art, the communal vibe, the camp-out style, the type of crowd all very much draws on influences from the Phish festivals. Of course Bonnaroo draws on other influences, most namely New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival, but it undoubtedly draws on what PHish was doing back then. Bonnaroo is basically a conglomeration of Jazz Fest and a Phish fest. Why do you think the first one was so heavily jam-laden, and had Trey Anastasio close it out? Because Superfly thought the idea of what Phish was doing could work in the format of a multi-band festival. If 100,000 people would go to a festival like this for one band, surely they could draw that many for a similar type of fest with multiple bands. They even both have ferris wheels, something you don't see at ANY other festivals. If you saw so many phish shows, I don't know how you could think they aren't similar? They similarities are striking, imo.

no anger here... phish did a great job picking up the pieces after the fateful coma, and adding a few things. the only thing i get a little tired of is the its not an event if the roadie for phish isnt helping somebody at roo. you have to admit (even if you dont feel that way) that we see a lot of that here. I truly would rather see something brand new from the white stripes or one of the staples sisters classics or something quirky and new like the national than Trey play with anybody they can find. if trey put together a new project i would love to hear the innovation. but sticking him up there with anybody that walks by because "he is roo" gets a little old. Hope you can see the alternative. and by the way there was art and clean vibes and naked in the mud , and camping and yes jazz at woodstock. no ferris wheel except the one in my brain . the view was exceptional from there as well. dare to reinvent your perspective as roo has. the ride is fun. even if you are an old timer like me. oh wait a minute Im the one who likes the new variety sorry
Not to nitpick, Zoey, but were you there with your parents or is the birthday in your profile a little off? I mean, unless you were a really cool nine year old dude...
great point ad. I was there with my really cool parents. I personally wasnt cool at all. clearly i am still not. I really am not trying to raise a stink just hoping people move on a little.

This is a funny post, as it seemingly pigeonholes me as not enjoying variety. I love variety personally. I've seen over 100 bands at Bonnaroo alone, and my posts have been well versed in the acceptance of the evolution of bonnaroo. I realize you weren't on the board last year, but had you been, you would have read posts of mine explaining to others why it was necessary for Bonnaroo to grab Radiohead to expand the forte of the lineup to encompass all that which is good music, including music beyond the jamband realm. I have personally tried to help others with the expansion of their musical variety in pre-roo and post-roo threads such as this one: bonnaroo.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=downloads&action=display&thread=1172196824&page=1
So please forgive me, for I think it is ridiculous for you to act as if you are the only one who enjoys variety. Liking Phish does not exclude someone from enjoying other music. An individual hoping a Phish member gets added doesn't mean that person doesn't want to see Bonnaroo evolve. Bonnaroo is great b/c it bridges the gap between the old and the new. IT hits you year in and year out with new, fresh acts, even if it has to draw you in with older ones.
It's ok to not like phish and I don't really have a problem with people who don't. I understand the concept of not liking a band, or wanting to move on from one. I understand the concept of personal taste, and how it applies to opinion. But I don't really understand why someone has to come onto a thread such as this one, which is positive in nature, and act like they are above others because they they have moved on from something others haven't. I would hope that going to woodstock, and seeing 100 dead shows, and 50 phish shows would teach someone to respect the musical tastes of their peers, and not to try to debase them simply for the expression of their opinions.
And for the record, I am not angry, and I hope that my posts don't come off that way. I have tried to relay my thoughts in a civil manner, so please forgive me if the tone is anything but civil. I was simply explaining the fact that the Phish people helped organize and create the first Bonnaroo, and was told to "get over it" simply for this explanation. I really don't understand why that comment was necessary or relevant to the thread at hand.
