i was super pumped to see them. but man was i let down. their timing was off, stings bass was turned low, vocals sounded not to tight. all and all it was a good show, but sadly was the worst show i saw all weekend.
It seemed like they were three separate guys, not a band. Really didn't click for me...so I left and got a great spot for the Lips show (+ War Pigs as a "soundcheck" at 11:00pm)
Not only was I extremely let down by their set, I was too dumb to leave early for a good spot for the Lips - I couldn't believe how packed the stage was, I was so excited to see them and ended up not seeing them at all. I've never seen the Which (?) stage that packed before. I was so far back I was hearing music from the other stages.

I was extremely disappointed also - the sound was awful, they really didn't seem to meld with the crowd at all and they just did nothing for me at all. We left after about 4 songs and got a good spot for the Lips - got to see the Warpigs "soundcheck" so I am really glad we did
I thought the sound was alright, but isn't anyone else upset that the Police ended 45 minutes early? That's all me and my friends could talk about concerning that band.

Anybody out there like them :-( I for one had a really great time. The people we were standing by seemed to like it as well. I guess everyone just has different expectations. I thought Stewart Copeland looked like he was really having a good time? And Sting...well I am just a big fan. I personally would listen to him sing a toilet paper commercial and enjoy it. While they were my main reason that kicked off this crazy Roo adventure, I came away with an appreciation for some new bands and can thank the Police for that...because I probably would have never known Bonnaroo if it was not for them.

I don't dislike them, but they certainly weren't on top of my list of bands to see. I only went because there were no other bands playing at that time.

EXACTLY MAN! They were a major attraction for me and I can allow them a lot of slack musically (maybe they needed it!) but to not play for the full set!!! I mean Really! We drove though the freakin' TN gauntlet to see them and I feel that they owe me a full set + extra!
I was pretty thrilled to see them. I wonder if people scrutinize the other older musicians with this eye, but everyone has their opinions. When they were on, they were REALLY on-- it was great to see them play.
the police were horrible...fell asleep not even halfway through their set...luckily it gave me enough energy to make it all night saturday the crowd around me really seemed to enjoy it but then again it seemed to be a bunch of yuppies singign WEEEOOOHWEEEEOOOOOHHH over and over again... his vocals are so weak and it really shows in concert!

I was disappointed too. Here's why...
1. Sting obviously didn't do his homework about Bonnaroo. He acted like it was the name of the town or something. And he kept referring to "80,000 Tennesseans".
2. It looked like there was an obvious attempt to jam out, but Sting and Andy weren't sure exactly what to do. Stewart was back there drumming like a madman, trying to push those guys. Instead of taking songs to another level musically, Sting resorted to randomly singing pieces of lyrics during the jams. Hard to fault them too much for this though...it has been a long time.
3. The length of set (as everyone else has mentioned).
Most of this is minor complaints, and I'm certainly glad I got to see them. I think I just built it up to a level they had little chance of reaching. Not a bad concert, but certainly not the highlight.
My highlight was the 3 and 1/2 hours of Mule. Hands down.

LOL this bugged me too! i thought i was the only one!!!!
Well, I wasn't expecting much, so I thought I couldn't be disappointed...hah. Their guitar player just kept fumbling for those chords, didn't he? And Sting seems to be incapable of getting back from Contemporary Adult Land. I left and got in line at the comedy tent, heard the Lips' sound check. Much much better use of time.
But then, from across the farm, I hear..."yadda yadda Bonnaroo, Tennessee!" And pretty much everyone around me in line shared this "lol wut?" moment. How great.

I liked it but wished they had played closer to a full set.
Also, I too was wondering if anyone told Sting that Bonnaroo was not a city in Tennessee but a festival...but hey maybe we were all honerary Tennesseeans.
I liked it. I enjoyed it. It wasn't the best show I saw all weekend, but didn't seem alltogether horrible as many of you seem to think it was. I took it for what it was, a chance to see a band that I never thought I would have the chance to see.
In that sense, I thought it was good. However, I would not have paid the $150 ticket price to see them. They are nowhere close to being worth that much.
i enjoyed it but i also agree with some of the complaints. they tried to jam and theyre just not a jam band. stewart pushed them and for the most part they just got lost. i thought some fo the jamming was really cool though. but the jamming cut some songs off of the set and it must have frsutrated sting, because i heard he just walked off and left the rest of the band. it was still cool to see the police.

I loved it. I was especially tickled by their efforts to jam. They left their comfort zone because Stewart told them it's what the event demanded. The results were mixed, but they made an effort and I applaud that. I do agree though that Sting is annoying on a number of different levels. I attribute that to this sex without orgasms tantric sex thing.

agreed. Probably one of the most disappointing sets of the weekend, along with T-Bone Burnett's.
I guess it's all about perspective and expectations. I really enjoyed the Police, but then I was looking forward to it, because I love all the songs. And I loved that they didn't take it all serious, they actually tried to have fun, even STING! Yes, it wasn't perfect, they were off, but they knew it and still had fun with it and for a bunch of perfectionists that is saying a lot! They rolled with it and so what if they didn't know from town or festival name in TN - he's from across the pond!
I wanted to sing and dance and have fun and I did. I thought they had fun too, I didn't get that they weren't "into it"?? But that's just my take.....
ive seen more negative reviews for this st than any other at bonnaroo. not to be a dick but, if you thought the police sucked, you suck at life. they fucking owned it. maybe it didnt sound as good from tha back? i was about 30 ft formt he stage, and this is one of the best shows ive ever seen. again though, as someone stated earlier, i guess its all about perspective. stuart is a god.

It was great, IMO. Yes, there were a few screwups, but nothing that bad, nothing that could overcome finally seeing them live & hearing those awesome tunes I grew up with. And Copeland really brought it. Wow.
I, too, would have liked a longer set (and a Canary, a Bring on the Night, even Spirits maybe, etc., etc.) I couldn't believe they ended so early.
The sound was plenty good where I was (about 6 "rows" away from the stage, right between Sting & Stewart--near that 8-foot-tall a-hole with the big cowboy hat on...)
Maybe it wasn't perfect, but it wasn't so bad that anyone who was a fan would've walked away. This was my one chance to see them, and I have no regrets about it.

I also thought it was awesome. Everyone here would have royally complained if they had done their same usual shtick, but they mixed it up for the Bonnaroo crowd and they still get shit! They just can't win, but I thought it was the perfect way to do a reunion show. Play the hits, but don't make it all nostalgia. They changed some songs up, added new parts, extended them out, and played a few rarities too. I couldn't have asked for better.
