Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Haven't seen much mention of this on the board, but did anybody here happen to catch some shows in the Something Else tent? I thought this was an absolutely fabulous addition to Bonnaroo, I saw freaking Ravi Coltrane as well as the David Murray Black Saint Quartet and the Jacky Terrasson Trio, one set each day. It was such a welcome relief to spend some time sitting in a chair in an AIR CONDITIONED tent listening to what I thought was some of the best music at the Roo. I took some sweet videos of the shows I saw, hopefully I can get all my shit organized and get them posted on youtube in the near future.
What did you guys think of the tent/what (if anything) did you see there?
I saw The Stanton Moore Trio on Thursday, and the place was a madhouse. I heard the crowds for most sets in the jazz tent were calm, but for SMT there were alot of people jumping around and dancing. It also helped that Robert Walter was playing organ and tearing the place down.

Some managing problems notwithstanding, it was just excellent. I wouldn't have expected it to be so very intimate, you could really feel the energy of the band and it was easy to watch the musicians play their instruments if that's important to you. I disliked my line of sight frequently being broken by passing waitresses, but still it was well done. And the acts they got!! I caught Stanton Moore Trio, Ravi Coltrane Quartet, Stefon Harris & Blackout, and Don Byron feat. Chris Thomas King, and at each show I could feel the music pulsing through me in a more palpable way than at any other time during the fest. At one point I asked one of the main staff workers of the tent if they were going to have it back (which I wasn't expecting) and he said, "Oh definitely! We'll have a bigger tent to fit more people, too." So I'm happy to hear both those things, although I hope they don't compromise on the intimacy. I can't wait to see who they book for 2008!
EDIT: Also, there was a taper at the later Ravi show, and he told me he would probably be putting the show up on etree or archive, can't remember which. Either way, pretty sweet!
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

My favorite addition for this year. Really tremendous.
I'm so jealous to hear that Robert Walter played with SMT. I would've been there knowing that.
I saw Jacky Terasson trio on Saturday afternoon, and it was just perfect. I love that place, and I will probably try to see a show in there every day next year.
They should do extended jazz late nights as well. Can you see intimate late nights in that place by MMW, Greyboy Allstars, or the Bad Plus?
Nice, I mean how awesome was Jacky Terrason? Did you go to the first or second set? I went to the first, pretty much started my day there. The line got a little intense sometimes, but really getting there 20-30 minutes early was enough to not only get in but get a decent spot. I'm jealous you got to see the Stanton Moore trio lerxst, but the line for that was intense and I got there to late. Mosly it was pretty laid back, the organization was little shaky sometimes (I was particularly upset when they kept everyone outside during the extreme heat while they set up the band, no reason you can't let people inside then since it took awhile anyway) but overall such a positive experience!
I'm glad to hear it's coming back next year, I'm sure even though it may be bigger they'll still keep most of the same vibe. Great job Blue Note and Superfly!
Oh and nice clip mudderbug, I'll be posting some videos eventually as well I just have to catch up with myself (I shot lots of stuff). peace ya'll
Sunday was so hot and draining, I decided that having seen Ratdog numerous times, I was heading for the Jazz or Comedy tent. Comedy line for Flight of The Conchords was insane, and I had yet to see the Jazz Tent, so I went in for David Murray Black Saint Quartet.
Terriffic atmosphere, very very well done. Very fitting to Bonnaroo and so unique for any festival really. I loved it. I felt it only lacked 2 things, and that was smoke rising from the tables like at a smoky NYC jazz club, and also a bathroom. With no re-entry a bathroom is necessary. But I loved what I saw. The A/C wasn't working that well in the Bonnaroo Sunday Heat and Dust, but It was cooler than outside, so that was a plus. Loved the black motif with red lights. Very cool. I hope it's back in 08. I'm sure it will be.

That's funny, I wasn't interested in Jacky Terrason as I heard he was kinda smooth and light. He really was good?
EDIT: Awesome video, mudderbug. It was so good I reflexively clapped at the end, as if I was actually there. My wife gave me a strange look and I had to kind of play it off...
wanted to go see a lot of acts that were there, but from the moment i saw the line thursday night and then again friday, i said the hell with it. way too much quality music to be seen elsewhere without having to stand waiting in a ridiculous line.
i say sacrifice the a/c and make it like a regular tent where you just walk in whenever and you'll see attendance go up even higher. probably won't happen because i think part of the tent's purpose was to appeal to the more creature-comfort driven attendees, older crowd, VIPers, etc.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

you just had to happen upon it at the right time. there were times the line wasn't long. But yea, once I saw the line on thursday, I immediately x'ed Mago off my list, cause I knew I wasn't getting in.

xiphod, I'm not sure what you mean. The only super-long line I saw was for Stanton Moore. Every other time I went (see my first post) I got there about 5 or 10 minutes early, the gate was never full, got in just fine, and was able to find two seats together really close to the front. It was great! Of course I didn't even try to see any of the other popular ones like Mago or Philadelphia Experiment.

yeah i think a bunch of people saw the initial lines thursday night (which were bad, and which saw many people get denied entry into SMTrio) and just never went back - but it was definitely pretty easy to get in with about 15 minutes advance time in line. i didn't bother checking during medeski and martin but actually heard you were able to walk in just before it started.
did anyone catch philly experiment?! we were gonna go but we got side tracked after the lips....were the lines ridiculous like the comedy tent? i think we got to the comedy tent like 2 hours early for dave attel and the line was snaked all over the place...i dont see how people can just sit there for like 3 hours

weird i walked in right when dave attell was starting on sunday afternoon (granted it was against the white stripes) and the place was 2/3 empty.

I wanted to see the Something Else tent, so I went for the first performance which was someone I'm not familiar with, the Doug Wamble quartet. I wasn't really there for the band, just to see what the atmosphere was like and it was very nice. The A/C didn't make a dramatic difference in the temp, but it's nice to hear that we'll have this again next year.
Got in line about 30 minutes before Stanton Moore Trio was scheduled to go on, and I still didn't get in. As we were walking through the barricades, I was thinking to myself I wasn't gonna get it, sure enough we didn't. At least we got to listen to the Black Angels as we were waiting in line.
I only caught one show at the jazz tent, Mago. I really enjoyed it. Sitting down in the AC, sipping an ice cold drink, and seeing medeski and martin go nuts after having just been eviscerated by tool was very refreshing. If it's back next year, I'll definately make it a point to go again. It was definitely somethin' else from bonnaroo, but it was a welcomed relief.
Alrighty, I finally finished uploading my Ravi Coltrane (son of John and Alice Coltrane) videos on youtube. His was the first show I saw in the Somethin' Else tent, amazing stuff. And I just have to agree with whoever brought up the lack of bathrooms as a fault, I had to leave this show midway through because I just couldn't hold my piss anymore, I was almost shaking (although I'm sure that was also some from the music and the L).
Ravi blew my mind, I hope you guys like the videos, there are 4 of them about half an hour long in total:

Thanks for the videos
I absolutely loved the Tent and tried to spend as much time as I could in there. Though I missed some of my favorite acts... Mago.. I still loved what I saw. I did think they should've had it be a little bigger though. They had such amazing acts in there all weekend and it was a great environment inside. Can't wait to see what they have in store for next year... definitely a highlight of the weekend for me

I really liked the idea and I hope they bring it back next year. Aside of the line to get in, I enjoyed it a lot. I saw the Stanton Moore Trio and Mago. Both shows were great......so was the sound quality....and the Magic Hat!
jazz jazz jazzzz. One more set of videos for you guys, the amazing Jacky Terrasson (piano) trio, he played two sets on Saturday I caught the first one, totally awesome. Videos below:
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Got one more set of Somethin' Else videos coming, the awesome David Saint Murray Black, although it may be a while I'm taking a trip down to Miami for the week, be working more on this shit when I get back. peace ya'll
