All right cats, here's the question: who should perform in 2008? For the sake of discussion let's assume that they do work out the kinks in capacity, wait, delay, logistics, management, etc. Who would you like to see? Who would be a great fit? Who do you predict?
In the "living legends" category, I think the most obvious choice is Sonny Rollins. He's alive, kickin', performin', and still sounds great. I think Anthony Braxton deserves to hold the "avant-jazz" title, since he's already its reigning king. Newer acts with rock/jamband crossover appeal would be Brad Mehldau Trio and Esbjörn Svensson Trio. Also it's high time The Bad Plus were brought back... or at least their sister group, Happy Apple.

Good idea, Steve! Let's all follow Steve's suggestion.

Any of these would be cool: Eliane Elias Al DiMeola Charles Lloyd Bill Frisell (I really enjoyed his set a couple years ago at the Roo) Marc Ribot (another Roo veteran) Henry Kaiser & Wadada Leo Smith's Yo Miles! band Jazz Is Dead Quintology Zony Mash Ahmad Jamal Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey Garage a Trois (another really good show that I saw at a previous Roo) Karl Denson Trio Pat Metheny Group Curlew Roy Haynes Trio Nels Cline John Scofield Sonny Rollins Billy Cobham Sex Mob John Zorn's Masada The Crusaders Green Light Bill Bruford's Earthworks Jerry Gonzalez & the Fort Apache Band Lettuce Wayne Shorter Garaj Mahal Ray Russell John McLaughlin OM Trio Zuppa Allan Holdsworth Melvin Sparks Band Pat Martino Ohm Mahavishnu Project Jack DeJohnette Calvin Newborn

Nice ones. I was listening to Sex Mob the other night.
Pat Metheny Group would be awesome, but that would have to be on Which Stage, I think.
You know, the big problem with all this is that since the tent is sponsored by Blue Note, we can only really expect artists from that label, which eliminates a lot of fantastic names. I wonder if maybe they'll do away with a sponsorship next year. Or better yet, offer the sponsorship to other jazz labels! I vote ECM!!

Take the Jazz tent and make it mesh, so if want to see it from the outside you can. You can hear the music very well from the outside, and would be louder if it was mesh. Who should be in their next year. NELS CLINE from Wilco has a sick as anything Jazz band, and a c-d called New Monastery that is really good. If Wilco was playing too, then he would already be their and it could happen. I wonder If superfly knows he has this band tough?

Nels played in the jazz tent w/ somebody last year, and the program article for Wilco mentioned Cline's jazz background, so yeah, I'm pretty sure they are aware. He would be a great jazz tent act, weather or not Wilco was there.
And Steve, regarding Ponty, I agree his new stuff is really bland. I more had in mind his early 70s fusion stuff, which I honestly don't even know if he plays anymore. But check out his album King Kong on Pacific Jazz. It's him playing arrangements of Zappa tunes, and contains 1 kick-ass origional of his called "How would You Like To Have a Head Like That?"

Actually I was referring to his 70's stuff as well as later stuff. However I haven't heard that particular album, so I'll be sure to give it a shot!
Wasn't it a couple years back that he, Béla Fleck and Stanley Clarke toured together under the name "Trio!"? I never caught them, but I bet it was great. Perhaps another all-star group like that should be formed.

i would really love to see scofield do some stuff from that album with nothing but ray charles covers, its got other roo-type artists on it including warren haynes, dr john, john mayer, some others i cant think of, also, the jazz tent should be bigger and the comedy tent too, those lines suck, you miss stuff, but then again you cant be at every stage at every hour of the day
I'd like to see Ken Vandermark, Skerik/Mike Dillon Duo (anything with Skerik, really), The Tord Gustavson Trio, Rite of Strings, Cyrus Chestnut, or Isotope 217 (if they still tour). Honestly, I'm not gonna be too picky about who's there as long as the tent is back next year.
Isotope 217 would be great, but I don't think they would be in the jazz tent. Jazzy, but not jazzy enough. But hell yeah for Ken Vandermark and others.

Maybe I should reiterate that, as far as I know, that was a little-publicized, one-off tour in the summer/fall of '05. Amazing as it probably was, I don't think they have any plans of doing it again.
