Start with De-Loused in the Comatorium. It's easily their best work. Don't let that video fool you, they are brilliant performers. There are some live videos of them on Youtube that capture what they do pretty well. They are a live band, for sure.

one thing to keep in mind is if people didn't get up and walk out during a mars volta performance, then they wouldn't be doing it right

I thought the Letterman performance was great

Here is a good concise/slow Mars Volta video/song for warming up to them

well, i walked out when they played - twice - at both RHCP concerts i saw when they opened.

in fact, ive never seen that many people walk out of an opener before...both times.

it was a loud, uncoordinated mess. i really do not get that band / the worship they recieve.
