i can't go to Roo this year because all 15 of my roo buddies don't want to support Metallica, or the fans that they bring.
We have a festival here called "livestock" which brings the most rude, close-minded, fight starting, "show me your tits" yelling, rioting, polluting, selfish people i've ever been in contact with... And about 90% of them are Raging Metallica fans (you can seriously here 20 different metallica songs just walking the main strip). The whole reason my 15 buddies have been going to Bonnaroo for the past 3 years was to get away from all that... my friends said they dont' want to go to Bonnaroo even if Metallica brings 10% of those types of people....
Sucks for me, cause there are bands i would love to see this year, but i'm certainly not going alone...

my boyfriend heard a DJ announcing that metallica was playing on a hard rock radio station yesterday and the DJ was saying he couldn't believe metallica was playing a hippie fest and that bonnaroo must be getting better now because they are getting heavier bands and that all the metallica fans should come to roo and throw rocks at the hippies! Scary
good thing there are not many rocks shhhh that's my little secret.

At first, I was bummed about Metallica. I am a Metallica fan, but they make little sense, other than they can put on a good show. And I agree that Lars doesn't fit into the vibe of Roo especially with the Napster issue. Not quite as endearing as fighting ticketmaster or helping the plight of the American farmer.
My biggest concern, though, was the hard-core Metallica fans ruining Bonaroo.
But after a day of thinking about it... I don't see a die-hard Metallica fan coming to Bonnaroo based on the lineup. Granted they might have some interest in Mastodon or old Pearl Jam, but there just isn't enough at Bonnaroo to motivate a metal-head to go to Bonnaroo. The lineup, the cost, and maybe even the whole camping-out experience is probably too much just for one show.

I was thinking the same thing. And even if they (a disgruntled fan) are willing to endure all of that, the sheer mass that bonnaroo is and the amount of great people around would either keep them in their tent all week or keep their mouths shut. I'm really only worried about the whole "throw rocks" type of people that were mentioned before. I know quite a few metallica fans; some are hardcore assholes and others are really great people with a diverse musical taste. I'm not about to generalize before I'm even there.

I think going to bonnaroo alone is the way to do it, theres 900000 other people there to meet. I also don't see how people aren't getting this. METALLICA DOESN'T PLAY POST BLACK ALBUM STUFF AT THEIR SHOWS, EXCEPT FOR LIKE 2 SONGS. Oh yeah, they have also played Master of Puppets all the way through recently for its 20th anniversary....

I am dissapointed with Metallica playing Friday
I have seen Metallica with GNR and Faith No More in DC. What a disaster tour that was. Metallica and GNR couldn't get along because both were out to be the headliners and the tour disolved. Besides the moshing, fights, and the fact you couldn't understand a single lyric.... I thought the show sucked.
This forum is for people to state there opinions, good, bad, or indifferent. So what if people have negative comments.
I have been to Roo four times. I like Pearl Jam but Metallica just makes me sick to my stomach.
They're fools if they don't think a tour is gonna get announced. They are playing because a lot of people like them. Superfly does not care that drew8970 doesn't like Metallica, its not drewaroo. How bout people wait till after the show to rip on them, at least you have some basis then. Yeah, Metallica didn't like people stealing their unfinished song, real bastards. And they didn't even try to get money from anyone or shut down napster in their whole law suit if i'm not mistaken. I have looked forward to 1 headliner in the 2 bonnaroos i've been to, theres more than one show. Most of what people base their dislike for metallica on is things they caught a brief listen of on the news or have heard about it from someone. We already have several threads bashing Metallica, i think the rest should just be locked.
I cant wait for Pearl Jam to blow Metallica out of the water!!!.... I really hope they have Pearl Jam back again at another bonnaroo too, cause they people who arent going because of metallica wont get to see the Best PJ show ever!!, so lets hope Pearl Jam plays Bonnaroo again!!
The ignorance displayed on these boards is somewhat surprising regarding Metallica and their fans. For a festival supposedly preaching musical crossover and tolerance, you don't seem to be practicing the spirit of it very well. If Slayer or Cannibal Corpse had been announced I could understand your ire but Metallica are hardly at the core of the extreme metal scene. At the most recent Bridge School Benefit in San Francisco Metallica beautifully covered a surprising choice of bands including Blue Oyster Cult, Garbage, Dire Straits and Rare Earth. Perhaps if you naysayers carefully remove your heads from your arses and bother to listen you'll hear a band that has defied its own origins to create something unique and powerful and completely deserving to be on stage at this festival. They play festivals like this all the time in Europe with all sorts of eclectic line-ups and no-one there seems to care this much. As for the notion that the only thing Metallica will bring to the Bonnaroo festival is mulleted, beer-sozzled neanderthals is a pretty stupid thought, all in all. Most Metallica fans I've met (and they've been many as I've seen the band play in many countries over the years) are polite, tolerant, easy-going and intelligent people who'll fit right in with everyone else. Perhaps you should all try to be the same and who knows, you may even be pleasantly surprised.

Now if we could have the Monty Python camp come to the roo for a performance, that would be a frakkin awesome time.

My personal advice for anyone who doesn't want to see Metallica, don't see them. Go to the silent disco for a while, then get close for a late night. As for the complaints about Metallica bringing a bad crowd, just travel with a crew of people you want to be around. Besides, are the harcore Metallica fans really going to show up at a lot of the shows that people who don't like Metallica are going to be at? In closing, Levon Helm is the man. That is all.

Actually, 60% of the people who voted in the Blue Room poll said they wouldn't want Metallica there. There's a reason so many people are complaining, and that reason is that, with their drawing power, Superfly could've done much better than a band that hasn't been relevant in 15 years.
My point was that Metallica's crowd aren't some horrifying force of nature to be feared or avoided. They're talked about here like they're a bunch of sub-humans. Try and change your attitudes towards people you've clearly never met. Just nonsense...

My mistake on the disco. Still, people care a bit too much about the headliners. I know I sound crazy for this, but maybe that's because I usually like to get close for the late night acts. Besides can Metallica really be worse than The Police were last year? Again Levon Helm rules!

While I'm sure your definition of 'worthwhile albums' of the last fifteen years would probably clash with mine, all I can say is that Metallica are indeed playing as headliners and that's not going to change. Instead of whining about it as if they're going to come and slaughter your family, why don't you just try and enjoy it instead? Chances are you'll like it far more than you'd care to admit. They're an exciting live band with a great back catalogue and it's not like they're so heavy they sound like Cookie Monster gargling over a vacuum cleaner.
oh my god, metallica is playing, get over it. if you dont want to go, dont. if youre going and dont want to see them, drink beer n get ready for the allman bros or whomever plays latenight. if youre going and want to see them, lets have a good time and sing "where ever i may roam" in unison. i dont like new metallica, i was pissed off for the first 15 minutes, im over it. ill get shitfaced with everyone else n go watch lars' head grow even bigger on the stage. lets all just drop it n move on with our lives!

Let's agree to disagree. I tried that with Tool last year. I tried to get into them and just couldn't. I checked them out, but it just wasn't my thing
And I really don't see why the people who don't like Metallica and don't really want them there can't have a thread where they don't get attacked. I don't go into the "Excited for Metallica" thread and say "I wish they weren't playing". This is a thread for people who don't want Metallica there. Plain and simple.
