One of my friends is really only into jambands, but i want to expand his mind and get him into some new stuff at roo. What are some "jamband friendly" artists on the lineup this year? People who jam, but you wouldnt consider jamband? Or really any other suggestions for artists he might like..
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio."
i dont know why people think the jam scene isnt diverse, tell me one way how Phil and Friends, STS9 and the Disco Biscuits sound alike at all. but on that note tell him to listen to MGMT, MMJ, battles and thats about it really. there not jam bands but they are very good bands
i would recommend trying to trick them by showing them langerados lineup. if that wont work i guess id go with umphreys and little feat. roo is a hard sell to a jam fan anymore.

Yeah with, Umphreys, the Allmans, Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, OAR, Little Feat, Willie Nelson, Yonder Mountain, The Bluegrass Allstars, Bela Fleck, Levon Helm and not one but 2 Phil Lesh performances....there's virtualy nothing for the jam community at Roo 08....
Drive by Truckers, Little Feet by this roo will not be an easy sell for jam band fans
I'm a jamband fan and I like the Drive By Truckers and Little Feat. I'd even be willing to argue that Little Feat IS a jamband.
Yea, I guess they are but I'm not sure how many younger people know about them. I know when phish used to play time loves a hero I had to explain to some of the kids who they were.

good point. i just like to be a smart ass. it dosnet look bad when ya lay it out there. until ya see the ticket price. i just see all of those names on other lineups that, for me anyhow, are way better then roos and certainly a lot cheaper. and they have headliner and latenight slots and most of those will be daytime shows at roo. im sure everyone, especially jam fans, know the importance of after dark shows. roo kinda screws ya on that. its down to 2 latenights now. if they would have other bands playing during the headliners it wouldnt matter and i think alot of people would stop bitching.

not sure what you mean by "down to 2 late nights." That's all its ever been at Bonnaroo. 2 late nights. And Bonnaroo has the best late nights in the f*cking business, so much so, that fests like Langerado are using Bonnaroo like a virtual blueprint for late night action this year.
There's really no other fest that can boast this late night lineup: KDTU moe. (x2) Keller Incident Galactic (x3) - two special shows STS9 (x3) the Funky Meters Medeski Martin and Wood The Flaming Lips (x2) Particle (x2) Josh Wink Mark Farina RJD2 Cut Chemist the X-ecutioners Danger Mouse Vida Blue Praxis Umphrey's McGee (x2) Primus Ween Robert Randolph and the Family Band The Mars Volta Brazillian Girls Saul Williams De La Soul Trey Anastasio The Secret Machines DJ Krush Common Blackalicious Lyrics Born the Disco Biscuits My Morning Jacket Sasha Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, and The Duo Dr. John Ben Harper/John Paul Jones/?uestlove DJ Shadow String Cheese Incident Gov't Mule Sasha and Digweed
That's just off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure I left a few out.
But yea, show me a festival that has late nights that rival that. I don't think you can do it. You'll be extremely hard pressed to.
The one TRUTH about Bonnaroo, at the end of the day, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE LATE NIGHTS.

here's the thing. As someone who saw the Grateful Dead, and who saw Phish more times than I'd like to say, if you go to Bonnaroo for jam-only acts, you are completely missing out.
I understand wanting to see jambands, believe me I do. I went to the first Bonnaroo, and back then, if Bonnaroo 2002 had THIS lineup, I may not have gone. However, Bonnaroo has allowed me to expand my live tendencies beyond the jamband realm by exposing me to GREAT GREAT music I would have NEVER given a chance otherwise, b/c I had my "jamband-blinders" on.
TAKE THOSE F*CKIN THINGS OFF, MAN!!
I still love jam music, and I thrive on improvisation in the live setting. But there is so much more to music than the narrow framework in which jam music exists that to limit yourself to that genre at a festival like Bonnaroo does yourself a great disservice.
Tell your jam friend, that if he goes to Bonnaroo, he will see jambands. And he will see hip hop acts, rock acts, djs, grunge bands, indie bands, bluegrass bands, and on and on. He will be exposed to so much music, that his head might spin b/c of it.
The music that's left a lasting impression on me from Bonnaroo is not the sh*t that drew me to the festival in the first place, but the music that took me by surprise b/c I didn't know how good that music was before I came. That's what it's really all about. IF you are going to Bonnaroo to see the same jamband acts year in and year out, there's a gazillion other festivals doing that today, and your jamband friend should go to those if he is not willing to be exposed to anything but the jam.

well i wasnt saying that roo has fewer latenights then it did or other fests. im saying that jam shows in the daytime tn heat arent that appealing and dont entice a jam fan to come to roo. basically jam fans are buying a 300 dollar ticket to see 2 latenights. and they took away the sunday headliner slot from jam too. thats the reduction i was refering to. which is just a continuation of the reductions that have been happening every year.

I couldn't have said it nearly as good or as true as you did my friend. I discovered Bonnaroo for myself in 2005. At that time I was pretty much only about jambands. But every year since, it seems like the Bonnaroo lineup for that year becomes my favorite bands of that year. And as each year passes, my music collection increases before my eyes. The same thing happens to me with the Austin City Limits Festival. Thank you Bonnaroo!
i bought the new record today, 'trampoline' and it's not quite as jammy with a little more pop sound, but the previous one, 'twilight tales from the prarie sun' is a lot more jammy and i swear it sounds like the late 60's.
I have a feeling this is gonna be one of the most underrated acts at this year's fest.

Close your eyes. Picture a convict. What's he wearing? Nothing special, baseball cap on backwards, baggy pants... he says something ordinary like... 'yo, thats shizzle.' Okay. Now slowly open your eyes again. Who are you picturing? A black man? Wrong. That was a white woman. Surprised? Well, shame on you.
