Check it now, I gave you a little boost, just because I respect your right to your own opinion.
Each Against Me! album I've ever heard has grown on me with time. The only one that I loved immediately was As The Eternal Cowboy. I couldnt get past the vocals and production values of Reinventing Axl Rose for a long time, until I saw them in a live setting. SFAFC seemed too moody and self-absorbed at first, but then...well, i guess i became kinda moody and self-absorbed, so I could see where those songs were coming from. And then the optimism of New Wave made for such a stark contrast. I dunno, I like how they've never written the same-sounding album twice, and yet they're always written from an honest state of mind.
You know how there are some bands that seem to just pinpoint exactly how you're feeling, and put into song form. That's Against Me! for me. So many of their songs, it's like "Damn! I totally could've written that, but they beat me to the punch."
"America, oh, I'm not sick searching in America. And in this we celebrate all that is not OK. I don't know what I believe in, I don't know where I belong. So I scream at the top of my lungs and I run in every direction!"
I like Against Me! but have only seen them open for the Foo Fighters earlier this year and as with 90% of openers they were overshadowed by what the Foos were about to lay down...
Here are some snippets I took from their show in Oakland, CA show in February 2008.
I have just started listening to these guys, because of all you lovely inforoosters! I like their rendition of Wagon Wheel and love anything acoustic.. That being said, what album would you suggest I pick up first?! Thanks in advance
Well, I saw Against Me open for the Foo Fighters last night and I can now officially say, no, they are far from the best band on the lineup. If I closed my eyes, that could have been any number of bands on stage. There was nothing that set them apart from any other radio "punk" band except for some moderately political lyrics. Their sheltered suburban childhoods have clearly left them without any life experiences or anything to inspire their lyrics.
On top of that, I have been a Foo Fighters fan for around a decade now and I am sorry to say that will be the last time I will see them. Dave Grohl spent 30 minutes of a 2 hour show talking, including about 10 minutes about how he knows Lemmy from Motohead (whoop-dee-doo). This was the third time I have seen them and they played nothing other than the new songs that I hadn't heard before. I don't understand why bands get lazy and starting doing this doodie. Who wants to play the same 20 songs every night? Plus, who wants to see a band that's been playing the same 20 songs for 3 straight months and is clearly bored of it? I have a picture of Dave Grohl drumming for the opening act at a 200 person bar in his pre-Nirvana days. I wonder if he remembers that doodie? I wonder if he remembers that everything wasn't always so comfy and that he couldn't always get 10,000 people to pay 50 bucks to see him. For 50 bucks, I expect more than some dudes going through the motions. I've seen bands playing for a case of beer play with more passion.
^^^ I was at that show last night too, and I totally agree with you about the Foos, they were pretty meh.
I do have to respectfully disagree with you about Against Me! though. I went last night with the intention of getting them out of the way now to reduce conflicts at Bonnaroo, but now I just want to see them again. I wouldn't go as far as to say they're "the best band on the lineup", but they do absolutely bring it live and I for one will be front row center for their show at 'Roo. Easily in my top 8 anticipated acts this year.
(the other thing about last night's show that you have to keep in mind is that about 90% of the crowd had no idea who Against Me! is, with alot of them probably confusing them with Rise Against . Any show can be crappy when you're watching it with a bunch of people that don't care)

It had nothing to do with the crowd. The music was bland and unimaginative. Just more of the same old
