For those of you going to Roo '08 but were initially or still disapointed with the line-up( and those who are not )-first a story, then a question:
I went to 4 festivals last year( and i will be at all 4 again this year), starting with SXSW in March. I bought my Roo tickets in April, and then bought early bird advance tickets to Lolla. I bought the Lolla tickets solely on the fact that I went to Lolla '06, had a great time, and I would be back. The line-up had yet to be announced. When it was, I was really dissapointed. I never got into Daft Punk, had seen Ben Harper like 4 times( including Roo of that same year), never got into Muse or interpol, and have already seen Pearl Jam. But with tickets already bought, I thought I would make the best of it. Well, to my surprise, out of all 4 fests last year I went to( SXSW, Roo, Lolla, and ACL ), lolla musically was the best. Tight little sets, great music, I could continue. So , my point is...this years Roo line-up may come with initial disappointment to a lot of you( not me ), but may turn out to be one hell of an experience...GIVE IT A CHANCE......Leads me to an all important question:
What Music Fest have you attended where when you first heard the line-up, you were extremely disappointed-but then it turned out to be one of if not the best fest of your life? Discuss....
the only festival i would buy tickets for without knowing the lineup is camp bisco, other than that personally i wouldnt buy a tik without knowing the line up. not to come off as an elitest or anything, but i listen to and go see A LOT of music anyone who knows me can vouch for this so as far as roo goes this year, iv listened to basically every band on the line up and when i tried to make a top 10 must sees i only could come up with 8 so thats why im dissapointed with the line up. also of the 8 bands on my list, iv seen 5 already and the other 3 will play in new york in the future, prob multiple nights, so its just not worth it for me to go. see ya'lll at Rothbury!!

No camping but there are camp areas where you can train/drive from. Or there is a hostel like 4 blocks from the site if you are looking for cheaper.
I heard the closest camping option (Windy City Campground) closed down recently. Camping is definitely not much of a convenient option for Lolla. Some see that as a good thing, some see it as a bad thing.

I went to Lolla and Roo myself last year. I guess it depends what you're into, but I thought Roo was over the top compared to Lolla. I'm guessing the camping, late nights, and maybe the southern atmosphere had a lot to do with it. I even found the music to be a lot better at Roo - longer sets, plus amazing shows by Mule, Tool etc.

For the record, I think this year's lineup is better than last year's. If Metallica and Jack Johnson were, say, Radiohead and The Dead, everyone would probably be talking about how it's the best festival lineup ever. You can't let a couple of bands ruin it. This year's lineup has a ton of depth.

I went to both as well and thought the same thing. The camaraderie/vibe/experience at Roo is way better than Lollapalooza. I think this has a lot to do with the no camping thing. Really enjoyed the shows but as a whole Roo was more all around fun.
Good thread, but I think we are sitting this one out. We really enjoyed ourselves in 06 & 07. A lot of our decision is based on: Who we have seen already that is playing this year The last time we saw them How many times we have seen them in the past two years Can we see them locally Who don't we care to see
Again unless some good artist announcements come out .....have a fine time and we will see you in 09....
Last year I was disappointed with the lineup and had a great time and head a ton of great stuff I'd never listened to prior to the lineup announcement. In fact it was one of my favorite overall times at roo. In 05 I liked the lineup a lot but was disappointed by the fest overall, it was still an awesome weekend but my least favorite of the 5 I have been to. This year I think it is the best undercard Roo has ever had and I am going to be positive about Metallica. Jack Johnson is my biggest disappointment this year, not that I didn't want him there or even that I would mind him playing a headlining spot, I just wish it wasn't Sunday night. Oh well, I already have tix and I am really excited for this Bonnaroo.

i've been to bonnaroo in 05 and 07 and ACL in 06, when i got tickets the lineups were already out but i was never disappointed with the lineups and i had an amazing time at all 3, ever since going to my first roo, i swore i would never miss another one, i regret not getting the money together in time for roo 06, i like that lineup better than this years, but i loved last years roo the most cause most of my favorite bands played with the exception of the headliners, but i did get the money together in time for ACL 06 mostly because i missed roo, i love the city of austin, i'm 5 minutes from cincinnati so going to ACL i choose to fly and you have to stay in a hotel, so it ends up costing me 3 times as much as bonnaroo does, i'm trying to find the perfect fest for me this year and so far its looking like its rothbury, however i don't want to go to a fest in an area that i dont know, i know the trip to bonnaroo and i know the farm and i feel comfortable on my own there, i believe this is the first year for rothbury and they have the sickest lineup out of all the festies this year, thats my personal tastes, but i'm not sure about going alone to a brand new fest, i may choose bonnaroo this year simply because of the comfort fact but i have this feeling that 2008 is just not a good year for festivals, i dont know why thats just how it feels to me, i cant afford any fests like ACL where i would need the hotel and flight, so rothbury seems to be a little cheaper than bonnaroo, i can't make up my mind but i basically have to in the next few weeks or month at most, i dont wanna miss a fest this year because thats what i look forward to each year as my vacation, vegoose this year would be nice, i've never been to vegas and it would give me the most time to save some money

radiohead and the dead would be pretty damn big but i think he meant more like "insert two established bonnaroo artists" and people would instantly rave over the rest of the lineup instead of getting stuck on the headliners
yeah i agree to a point...but again. the lineup DOES included jack johnson and metallica, so "ifs and buts" are nice, but judging something by ignoring or replacing the parts you don't like itsn't all that useful. maybe the lineup would be better if superfly had made better choices at the top, but they didn't, so it isn't

I was a little bummed when it came out...but I've been listening to Sigur Ros, Yonder Mountain, Against Me!, and Ghostland Observatory based on Infooroo suggestions...
let me tell ya, I've fallen in love with Ghostland Observatory and I'm totally stoked about Roo 08!

Good stuff man, Ghostland is indeed one of the coolest new bands I've run across thanks to Roo. Glad you're getting into Sigur Ros too, be persistant...theyll blow you away.
I keep hearing complaints about Metallica and Jack Johnson, but NO kudos to Pearl Jam and Phil Lesh & Friends. I recognize that this is a thread based on complaints but...I mean does no one realize that Eddie Vedder is going to be among us? Or am I the only diehard Pearl Jam fan here?
Here's to a Yellow Ledbetter encore, that alone will wipe out the dissapointment of Metallica and JJ (who I'm still kinda excited about).

Actually, this is not a thread based on complaints......I started it as a discussion on initial weak line- ups leading into one hell of a good time, like I think this year's Roo will be for those who think the line-up is weak.....personally, I love the undercard, Metallica, Pearl Jam, and Kanye...not stoked about Jack, but maybe I be in for a surprize
