^ Um, please see my post above yours.
Well I couldn't agree with you more about the average American, but the average American is not going to camp on a farm in the Tennessee heat for 4 days in the June to see a concert either. "The other ones" are not the target demographic profile of Bonnaroo.
You're getting die hard music fans, that know very well who these people are, and are familiar with the music.
Your proposed schedule makes a lot of sense too, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it went down like that. Yet, to me it seems more likely that they will be on a stage due to the interest of likely Bonnaroo attendees.

Bonnaroo's official news announcement was just posted, and DJ Tiesto is confirmed for late night! So it's got to be a REALLY late night set until dawn.

If Bonnaroo wasn't targeting the average American music fan, they wouldn't have signed Metallica to headline.
you really think the majority of people who attend a festival like Bonnaroo are CASUAL music fans? just because a headliner doesn't fit into most of our conceived notions of what bonnaroo is, doesn't mean the people who are there are all casual fans. i'm certainly not, and from the discussion that goes on around this board, i don't think most of them are either.
I mean, I'm not trying to make broad generalizations, I'm going to the fest, and I'm never one of the people complaining about the lineup.
If we're going to split hairs, you can change "casual music fans" to "people who don't pay attention to Icelandic bands with lyrics in a language that isn't real." Sigur Ros just "took over" Youtube for a day, and I'd still bet you that I can go to work and talk to all my fellow cooks - all of whom love festivals, play in bands, or really dig music - and none of them will have heard of Sigur Ros. In fact, I only have two friends who have mentioned them to me...she loves them and he doesn't.
My point was that people are overestimating the draw of Sigur Ros. Will there be plenty of people who go see Sigur Ros? Yes. Will there be more people who want to go see Phil Lesh? Yes. I know, I know, that's why they put him on Which, but Sigur Ros is still not too big for a tent.

I'm not arguing where they'll be playing. But I have a completely different take on your draw ideas. I could walk around and ask people in general here who sigur ros was, and they'd at least know who they are. I think YOU might be underestimating the draw.
I had a group of 22 friends who all went to a Sigur Ros show back in 05 or 06 i believe. I wasn't able to make it. And that was in a town completely taken over by country music.

Remember, though, that Austin's still also a big indie hub...and being home to bands like Explosions in the Sky, I would expect more awareness there for bands like Sigur Ros. Just saying.
There's no way to know until the festival anyway, . Oh well, we'll see. <3
Oh man... I can't wait to do the Guido fist pump for about 5 hours straight! I saw Tiesto back in the day, and he brought it... I expect no different at Roo!

my friends who went in 05 or 06 were NOT from austin. i was living in college station, texas...home of Texas A&M...home of George Bush Sr's library...home of too much country music.

Mark my word, Sigur Ros will be packed wherever they will play at Bonnaroo. People who go to these festivals are pretty educated on who is who. Also, They are not really touring the states as I can see right now, so this will draw people in as well.

I hope we can have Tiesto and Sigur Ros both playing sunrise sets on the same day... because if tradition holds true, I won't have anything to do during a Tiesto show.

I'll let it go, I'll let it go. I'm a lover, not a fighter.
Maybe I just spend too much time hanging with the wrong crowd.

How many of them were students?
what does that matter?
for the record, they all were. but that would just prove my point further. people coming from all different places still know about this one band. i think you are seriously underestimating the sigur following.
Also, Tiesto is a huge name. Much bigger than Sigur Ros. You are kidding yourself if you think most 'Roo attendees will not have heard of Tiesto before.
Regarding Sigur's following... if you were even remotely familiar with Radiohead in 2000, chances are you heard about Sigur Ros via word of mouth. The EXPLODED in popularity, that year, and the majority of people (myself included) hung around to this very day, and potentially even further, granted they don't f*ck up and destroy their fanbase....
Sigur Ros is an INCREDIBLY popular and respected band, in certain circles in EVERY area.
Hell, Sigur Ros was even covered in Entertainment Tonight, I think, back when Ágætis Byrjun was released.

Totally matters...college students are generally more likely to know about more obscure bands. For instance, it was college radio stations that first broke R.E.M., leading to the big alt-rock boom of the 90's. In fact, the two people I mentioned earlier who have mentioned S.R. to me are students.
We shall see who's mis-estimating who soon enough, my lady.

you obviously don't understand the politics of Texas A&M. it is the complete antithesis of what you would consider a musically cultured city or population.
the fact that you could get so many people who knew and loved a band like sigur ros is ridiculous, and beats all odds.

Yeah, I guess I should add that I'm definitely not one of those people who hasn't heard of them. I became aware of them four or five years ago, I just don't know many other people that did.
Edit: And no, I probably don't understand the politics of Texas A&M. I'm sure it's very different from the University of Tennessee.

well, i'm sure we could argue about it all day, but in the end, different people have different circles, and are exposed to different music. if you haven't seen it, watch their documentary "Heima", then think about seeing them at BONNAROO of all places, and it NOT being at night. you won't be able to do it.

They put Sasha and Digweed in a tent last year, it will be fine again this year.
Im so glad Tiesto is going to be there, have always wanted to see his show and was mad cause I can't make it to Ultra this year.

They may be useless if you're looking for concrete evidence, but they sure do make for a great time killer before the show. Speaking of which, I really need to get back to work.
