I really dont get how jack white could be the musician of the decade, I think there is something wrong with me. I just don't hear any musical boundries being pushed, broken or created in any of his music. tho i dont listen to much of his music, someone tell me what to listen to

people are going to tell you to listen to "Conquest" apparently, speeding up your vocals is groundbreaking.

It's possible this is just a misunderstanding based on a spelling error. I believe that "Is Jack White Musician of the Decade?" is a simple miss-spelling of "Is Jack Johnson Musician of All Time?".

The drummer i like was the black guy with the dreads. He is sick!!
Thomas Pridgen? I feel like he massively overplays on everything, whereas Parks had a sense of space that all their other drummer have missed,
Hey, I was just wondering what album Parks played on for TMV. I was under the impression that Jon Theodore was their drummer until Pridgen came on for this album although I could be wrong.
Theodore is an incredible drummer by the way and I also love Pridgen. He does overplay, but it fits the music in my opinion. I mean let's be honest. TMV is NOT subtle.

"musician of the decade" is a big title to attach to anyone. popularity has to play a part in any such designation. does Jack White qualify? i am a big fan of his and i think that he MIGHT. yet.... it is only because he is in two bands and the principle songwriter in each that you can give it to him alone. but he isn't a solo artist, he's a band member. he is quite good and innovative. but the biggest and best of the last 10 years? i dunno...
i think Radiohead does deserve careful consideration. its hard to find very many music fans who don't either LOVE this band or at least appreciate them. their influence in the music biz is HUGE. plus, they are very influential all over the western world.
someone mentioned Pharrell Williams. his contributions can't be ignored simply because he is everywhere. the man has put his stamp on so many hits that its impossible to ignore him.
and finally... someone dissed Kenny Chesney a couple of pages ago. and even tho you might not like his music, you can't deny his power. this is a man who sells out every concert venue on every tour for several years running. and when he puts out new music it gets played. and it sells. (thats very important these days) to some people, Chesney could easily be the "musician of the decade" ...btw, i think he's gay too!
honorable mention: Warren Haynes, Beck, Prince (still gettin' it done)
I've seen good arguments for many of the artists people have suggested but I'll have to go beyond "honorable mention" with Warren Haynes
- Warren is a touring machine. In some years during this decade he must have been out on the road for two hundred nights. Aside from Gov't Mule and his solo acoustic work, he's toured as a full member of the Allman Brothers, Phil Lesh & Friends and the Dead.
- Since 2000 he's appeared on at least 13 official CDs (and bootlegs in the hundreds)
- Warren has hosted the Christmas Jam to benefit Habitat for Humanity every year for nearly 20 years. For this Asheville, NC has given him the key to the city and named a street in his honor.
- He's played at every Bonnaroo but one and the '07 late night was one for the ages...
- The Deep End series (honoring and aiding the family of the late Allen Woody) might have the greatest guest list ever. He's so well thought of by his peers that he can easily pull off a project like that.
- Warren covered Radiohead's "Lucky" at Bonnaroo in '03. Did they return the favor in '06?
I really dont think this question has anything to do with popularity, record sales or touring it has to do with quality of music, originality and creativity of the music, the influence of the music and the possible future of the music.
^None, he was just a fill in for Blake Flemming's second run. But, if you wanna check out some of Deatoni's work, check out John Cale's "Circus Live."
IMO Parks' definitive work with TMV comes around 1 hour into the Rapid Fire Tollbooth -> Jakob Van Lennepkade jam from Vegoose '06...I heard he was asked to join permanently but declined? He also drums for the Vernon Reid/DJ Logic project, "Yohimbe Brothers". I've never been able to find much of his material, I will keep an eye out for the cale CD
sorry to the 'heads here, but Kanye West is undoubtedly musician of the decade so far. He is unbelievably huge. I don't think anyone outsold him in 2007... 9 grammy awards... pretty much owns popular radio. you can argue musical credit... and it worries me that the biggest music today is built upon other music, but his effect will be long lasting, especially if his 4th record (probably out in 10... is that the new decade?) is anything like his first three.
the world doesn't need ANOTHER biggest musician coming from blues music. jack white is doing great things. but what does he inspire? delta blues - british blues - heavy metal blues - garage blues - ?
and radiohead, for being one of the better bands around, are over their peak 11 years ago
I'd say jack white will be the best musician of our generation, i believe he could be number 1 in history if onbly he was born 25 years sooner.
uhhh... do I need to mention the couple of hundred others I could place in front of him? It's even up for debate whether he's the best of the decade
its going to be opioniated know matter how u look at it. you said "hundreds of other you could put in front of him", thats ur opinion i couldnt put anyone in front of him, he was #9 of best guitarist in history in rolling stones
What do you guys think about Matt Bellamy of MUSE???
3 solid albums (Origin of Symmetry, ABSOLUTION, Black Holes) 2 HUGE performances (Glastonbury 04, Wembley 07) numerous awards for albums and LIVE performances the song New Born plays both piano and guitar as well as anyone in the industry
He's gotta be up there or at least in the conversation right?
In terms of musical innovation There is a pretty good argument for either Keller or String Cheese, they were two of the first when it came to the genre blurring that has really been the hallmark of the decade so far.
Matt Bellamy... I can't believe i forgot about him. Dude is a bad ass. He's an incredible singer and guitarist. Also, I think Maynard James Keenan should be in the mix. He released 2 Tool Albums (Laterlus being my favorite cd of all time) 2 for APC and his new side project Pusifier.
People, people, the amount of acrimony on this thread is unbelievable. This question is COMPLETELY, COMPLETELY subjective...I personally love Jack White and he would definitely be near the top of my list of musicians of the decade. But a lot of people don't dig him or just don't get him, and I can entirely understand why. Music is a question of taste. So any answer on here is just as valid as any other. Just because I think the idea of Maynard being in the argument is way off base doesn't mean it's not a valid opinion or even that it's a less valid opinion than mine.
Hey, Jude, don't be afraid. You were made to go out and get her. The minute you let her under your skin, Then you begin to make it better.
And any time you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain. Don't carry the world upon your shoulders. Well don't you know that it's a fool who plays it cool By making his world a little colder.
appreciation may be totally subjective, but innovation, influence, and complexity can all be demonstrated. (or not, as the case may be)
Agreed, entirely. But every artist even in this conversation demonstrates innovation, influence, and complexity. Which demonstrates each to a greater extent, however, ends up being subjective.

I would put Anrdew Bird up for musician of the decade over Jack White. Armchair Apocrypha is one of the best albums ever, and he puts on one of the best sounding shows ever.
