ok so here is my dilema. I am graduating college this semester with my bachelor of fine art. I have a strong portfolio and resume and decided I would continue my schooling and go ahead and get my MFA. I applied to a handful of programs across the nation, and now I have to decide between two schools and have to decide by tommorrow.
Colorado State University - I badly want to move here cuz a best friend lives there, and I love the outdoors colorado is awesome what more can I say. the program is sweet too. I was accepted into the painting program but they aren't gonna give me much in the way of scholarships. So I will have to go in debt a little more than I already am to cover my first year.
Ohio University - These guys are gonna give me a scholarship, assistantship, and waive my out of state tuition. they basically will be paying me to come to school there and give me a job teaching foundation art classes. only thing is, I have an idea that Athens Ohio isn't as beautiful as the doorsteps of the rockies, and I don't know anyone there.
So I have to decide between these two places by tommorrow, this is where I will be living and working the next 3 years. I feel like It would be dumb to pass up a debt free oppurtunity, where they gonna pay me lots to come to school there (ohio). but then again, I feel like i would be kind of selling out and moving somewhere I don't really want to live just cuz it would be financially easier and regret not moving to the rockies.
Ok well, if nothing else, just typing this out has helped me think of it in a new light.

Not to bash on OU, but i'd say CSU is the better school. Athens is nice too, but not as scenic as the rockies, but its still a nice town. But if you arent gonna be working for the school the next 3 years there arent much in the way of jobs around OU. If i were you i'd take the hit and go to CSU, if you aren confident in your skills and stability, you should be able to eventually pay off your debt, and you'll probably be pretty satisfied with your decision, it would just suck to go to OU and regret it. Just my opinion on it.
ya i agree with ziggy. ive enver been to to colorado but it has to be more beautiful. and not to hate on anyone or anyplace but i have partied in athens and it just wasnt my type of place. white hat paradise. id take colorado in a second. i think it would be worth the added cost. unless you love frat parties and 50 cent. im sure there is another side to athens. but i didnt see it the 3 times i was there.

Yeah, since its so big theres some cool people, but they are heavily outweighed by the white hats and ohioers who couldnt really get in anywhere else. My theory on OU has always been , if you want to be a journalist or just party its good, but if not you're probably better off somewhere else. Cant put a price on happiness.

man it's a no brainer go to OSU. First they are helping u with $$$$. trust me the less u have to pay for education the better off you are. Those colorado mountains may look nice but they will always be there. Plus a degree from OSU will go way further. I spendaabout 2 weeks a month hiring new college grad's for our IT dept. CSU is a good school but OSU has a larger alumni base which will be huge when entering the job market. "networking".......
Don't feel like a sell out . It's called being smart ...Play with the "house money" ..when u graduate from OSU in a few years your pocket book will be better off and your dream location to live will still be there the only difference is u will have a degree from a BIG TEN school and they helped pay for u to better your future.
OSU all day baby.....good luck in all that u decide.
is the program at csu better than the one at ou? if they're pretty much equal i'd say go to ou, the less debt you have to deal with after school the better, plus you can always visit colorado, or move there after graduation....
edit: go with the program that's better is all i'm saying, if they're equal, go for less debt, it'll be worth it in the end.

WHITE HAT!!!
No matter how many times I hear that phrase used it is still funny to picture my drunk friend yelling white hat at every popped collar that passed
But in response to the topic, I would go with CSU (purely on beautiful place and sometimes you gotta tell $$$ to F*ck off and go where you wanna go)
the facilities at Ohio state university for the painting grads is this big old renovated mental asylum called the "ridges". it has been in documentaries as one of the top ten most haunted places in america. their grad program in art ranks pretty high nationally. at OU i would get MAD studio space and posibly a pet ghost. I applied to OU cuz of the nice program, small town location, and awesome studio space. that being said, it was my last choice when applying, kind of just threw it in to have an extra or back up.
CSU on the other hand was one of my top choices. not as big studio space as ohio and no ghosts, but the location is MUCh more my style. I have a best friend there, who is also an artist/musician and knows the area. but damn, hardly any funding (a small scholarship, but damn out of state tuition is high) and cost of living is more.
in response to some earlier posts, they both rank about the same nationally as far as reputation of program is concerned.
thanx for the replies, I am definately leaning to CSU, like ziggy said can't put a price on happiness
and btw, wherever it is, the move this summer is being planned around bonnaroo
athens is in the middle of nowhere, but there is tons of amazing scenery not far away, not quite the rockies (i guess its kinda the start of the appalatians?), and no debt is key, but CO would probably be the shit. but alot of people think ou is the shit too.

Yeah, athens really isnt terrible at all, you can find some pretty cool people too. Just gotta think if theres a good chance you'll be happy there. If you think theres a pretty decent chance you wont like OU or just wish you were at CSU instead, it probably isnt worth the risk. Financial isnt the only risk out there. But like i said, interships and jobs like that can end up being a real pain at OU, just because of its location.
As a person who is paying grad school tuition, if I had a choice between those two places, I would pick Ohio. I've run myself $16K in debt since August. It's not fun. I think your enjoyment of Colorado could be overshadowed by the stress of paying your bills plus paying your tuition, which, as you stated, would be mad expensive.
The fact that OU is setting you up with a teaching job is also really great experience for you, especially if you've considered teaching as a potential occupation.
Colorado has your friend, and beautiful scenery...but, as has been stated above, those things would probably be there when you were done...and you'd be able to go enjoy them virtually debt-free. Might be something to think about.
I don't envy decisions like this; they are tough to make. I can see why you want to go to both of these schools...
personally - I would go with debt-free - scenery be damned - after you get done, you can always move to CO. (This is being said by someone with $50,000 in student loan debt that will take me the rest of my life to pay off at this rate)
A couple of friends of mine go to OU. As far as I know, they like it. It is kind of in the middle of nowhere though. Of course, there are parties, but you'll have that at any halfway big school. *shrug* I'd say debt-free is a lot better than not debt free, and I'm sure CSU costs a pretty penny.
