I was wondering what program everyone uses for thier ipods?
I really do not like iTunes and I have heard that there are progs out there that will let you manage your ipod like a drive. Where you can actually drag your songs FROM your ipod, back to the computer.
Anyone have any suggestions on different ipod management software??? Preferrably free? ;D
I tunes is free to DL. You dont have to buy the music from Itunes to be able to put it in your ipod. Just import your music to itunes. I really like itunes a lot. I just dont like that it converts your MP3's into M4A's.
I use WMP for my non-Apple mp3 player, and don't get why people hate it (besides the Microsoft=evil thing). I think a lot of people love fubar for its customizability but I never got past the learning curve. Songbird looks like it will be cool someday.

Yeah, I alredy use iTunes, I am looking for an alternative. I tried yamipod, but its kinda sketchy...
if you go into preferences, you can change the importing mode to mp3's and you can also convert all your music back to mp3's, but it duplicates the songs, so you'd have to delete all the m4a's.
i like itunes, but i have a crappy computer, so can't do much when itunes is running. otherwise, it works just fine for me.
Windows Media Player is just crap. There's a reason why the OEM's are all including iTunes pre-installed. Even the Vista ads frequently had itunes in the toolbar. iTunes wins by default, really, since at the least it's the best known alternative...
I have a Zune, so I simply use Zune sofware. Itunes is muuuuuuuch better though. Am I the only other person on earth with a Zune?
Oh and Jetaudio is pretty good.
my friends got a Zune that constantly f^cks with him. The song will stop randomly in the middle and the Zune will shut off and a bunch of other crap that is no fun while listening to music. I have an ipod that does the same thing but i have dropped it multiple, multiple times...but anyways, i liek the way the Zune is set up over the ipod.
I'm kinda neutral, I've heard of people's Zune's fn with them, but mine hasn't yet. A big negative though is that the battery life is rather short (like 6 hours of straight use). I like the iPod alot though, and like that they actually make those with hds larger than 300 gigs. Hopefully Zune can get some better support.
Btw, those commercials about trading music with em, a load of crock: you can never find anyone else to connect to and if you do, you only have the song for like 3 days (or is it 3 plays?)

itunes blows, and anyone who says they love it, loves it because they've never tried anything. sorry but i hate that itunes and ipod take it upon themselves to sort the music by id3. Id much rather set it up like a drive.
that being said, heres the answer to your question, Anapod Explorer. still not as great as i'd like but a BIG improvement over ishit.
Hey John, thanks for the link. 2 quick questions - I have a 60 Gb iPod video with my music manually managed (my collection is over 180Gb):
- If I install anapod, will I have to pick all that music again? - If I don't like anapod for some reason, what's the deal with going back to the original software?
I'm assuming that there's some drive reformatting going on somewhere.

no just install anapod and use it, it should auto detect all the music on your ipod. if you dont like it, just keep usuing itunes. you dont even have to uninstall itunes to use it.
I have loved my two Creative Zens. I have the 30G Zen Vision M now and I feel like I couldn't live without it.
Could someone tell me what is so horrible about WMP? I know I don't want iTunes, but what will a superior player do for me? As I mentioned above I've tried Songbird (cool but too buggy) and foobar (never got past the learning curve).

So it it solely a desktop tool? I'd imagined that it replaced the firmware on the iPod itself.

its an explorer. it allows you to explore the ipod, add, and remove tracks and basicly all the stuff itunes does.
Product Description: Anapod Explorer is the most advanced Windows iPod software available, offering full iPod management through full Windows Explorer integration under My Computer, easy drag and drop iPod transfer and iPod backup, PDA function support, web page interface access to your iPod through a built-in web server, powerful search and reporting capabilities using a built-in SQL database, and much more, all in one compact package.
I like iTunes to do the organizing for me. I have 40 gigs of music on my pod now. That's too much to organize by myself. I've never had iTunes steer me wrong or make me angry in any way. In fact, my iMac and anything associated with Apple has never made me angry. Back when I had a PC I was always angry at my computer. Life is better now that I just have a love affair with my computer instead of a love-hate relationship.
And I finally figured out a source for movies and TV shows that isn't the iTunes store. Hooray!
Since the original question was 'what do you use for your i-pod', I really don't have any business replying, but I will anyway! ;D
For anyone with a portable other than i-pod, I highly recommend Musicmatch. The organizational flexibility and ease-of-use are second to none imo. Also, if you're using any sort of volume leveling or mp3 enhancement (everyone should...see www.fxsound.com/dfx/pages/download/index.php?vendor=0&subvendor=0&plus=0&refer=0 ), these digital effects are copied to the portable as well.
However, it only works for Windows-based players. Not i-pods.
I for one love my itunes. It really is a very flexible prog. I have all kinds of smart playlist setup. For example my "mostly new" smart playlist is set to include all music added since Jan. 1 2007 that is greater than 1 star in my ratings that is not in the Genre hiphop. There are so many different ways to make a playlist it's staggering. I really detest WMP and I'm about as big a MS fanboi as you'll meet. WMP seems too intrusive, it assumes it knows whats best for me and takes over. Thanks but no thanks Microsoft I can handle managing my own music collection. Plus i have to admit I dig the album cover view features of the newer versions of itunes. If you use itunes and firefox you should check out the foxy tunes plugin, and it works with all types of music progs not just itunes and WMP.

im gunna go out on a limb and say you either buy most of your music from itunes or rip it from cd.
for people who still download music the old fashioned (illegal) way, alot of times youll get tracks that dont have full id3 tags, if you import these to itunes, it isnt smart enough to figure out its an album, since it doesnt work off of directory filing and instead organizes everything by the official id3 tags they expect all your music to have since it came from there store. sure you can type up the id3 tags yourself, but if your like me and have 150 gigs of music with only mabey 60% of it with good id3 tags it can be quite a tedious process/

Yeah, I ran into some of those issues too. But then I just got a cheap subscription to one of the download-only sites (just to get the selection I wanted) and a $20 copy of tunebite. Now, no worries! Just play the songs once in WMP and I have a copy with a good id3 tag that I can do with as I please..... ;D

I just got a creative and I completely adore it... didn't want an Ipod just for all the trouble my friends have had with them and didn't want a zune just because its a new product and undoubtedly all the bugs arn't worked out, creative zens are in like the tenth generation and I have never heard anyone have any kinks with them And I must say I love WMP as well just for the way it organizes the musice... but then again I have URGE running in my WMP and it may help with the organization... I can go in and brows by year, genera (which is generall pretty accurate) even by mood? and of course the usual artist, album, lable things... I really have no complaints about either WMP or URGE though... Yes yes... I know evil viacom/microsoft thing... but it works and its a cheap monthly subscription for all the music I want and since URGE is compatible with Zen (as well as a ton of other players) i dont have to worry about conversion or any of that stuff
