At least I am lucky that I've had Google Play and Plex Media Server basically create a backup of the library so I can compare the two when looking into what needs to be re-added. Going to take a while and be annoying but it is what it is.
Can you go to your iTunes account and re-download your purchased music? Once you bought a song then you can re-download it.
I barely ever buy music through iTunes. It's mostly downloads from sites, vinyl records or CDs. Wouldn't help me out too much.
I forget exactly what it was but when I had the issue there was some simple reset of the iTunes library that fixed the issue. Just google the problem, that's how I found the solution
This is kind of a different issue I think. He didn't lose the files, iTunes did. From my understanding he still knows where they are, but when you try to play them in iTunes you get an error code that iTunes can't find the file

I don't use the cloud because it caused some issues with some files a while ago so I always just avoided it.
I usually back up my external hard drive (which has my library and files) but haven't done it in a little while since it takes a long ass time.
So the issue is that iTunes has some albums but thinks the files are missing (which they aren't), there are some albums that it thinks are missing (and they really are....not sure where they went?) and the biggest issue was that a lot of the stuff I've added to iTunes just isn't showing up. For example....I've added two Cut Copy albums in the last year or so and they aren't listed in iTunes. I can find the files in the folder but it's annoying that they disappeared from the library.
I'm pretty sure that somehow, for some unknown reason, it just reverted back to an older iTunes library file and I don't have a backup of a recent one so it's going to be a lot of annoying, tedious reloading of my library. Even worse is when I was trying to fix it and trying something I read on google it created another music folder lol. So I just stopped and will have to start from the beginning when I have more time this weekend.

Check out media monkey. Its an awesome open source itunes replacement that has tons of functionality, especially with regards to library and file management. I lost my local hard drive and had to use my external backup, and itunes didnt recognize anything and it all got jumbled. Media monkey made it super easy to get it straightened back out.
Plus it syncs with ipods and can automatically download podcasts and stuff as well, so you dont even need itunes on your computer anymore. If you still have itunes though, it can import all your playlists, p laycounts, and metadata as well.
Plus its open source so its infinitely customizable, and has all sorts of plugins (like scrilobbling locally played tracks to last.fm if you're into that) and stuff. I switched a couple years ago and never looked back. And im pretty ocd about my library.

So this is basically just a replacement for iTunes that will still let me manage my iPod? And it definitely works for podcasts too? Or would I need to use iTunes for that (like download in iTunes and then transfer to media monkey)?
I've been thinking about ditching iTunes recently as long as I can manage my ipod and podcast stuff. Though, I do need to look into how the google play thing works because currently I have it set up so anytime something is added to iTunes it also gets uploaded to my Google Play library (so I can listen when I'm out of the house and don't have my ipod)

It is a complete replacement for iTunes. I sync my ipod, my iphone when I had it, etc. I have all my podcasts updated automatically.
I was having the issues you describe (itunes not seeing files that are there, etc) and media monkey was my solution. You can batch add files and folders, set it up to automatically monitor certain folders for new files, and let it organize folders and file names for you as you add new stuff. The best part was it imported everything from iTunes, including playcounts for the "missing" files. Its an excellent program. Plus its a full media server so I can stream my library from my office to my Xbox in the living room or my speakers by the pool.
I have no idea what happened but something went wrong with my iTunes and now a TON of music that I added relatively recently is missing. Some things got moved around and some things are just totally gone. What the fuck!?!?!?!?! Goddamn this sucks. I have a majority of the stuff that is still listed in my library but showing "file missing" but there's a bunch of stuff I've added in the past year that is just totally gone. Damn....this is going to be a long process of rebuilding and adding back in the more recent stuff I've got. I'm just so upset cuz there's no way to really tell what is missing until I start digging around my folders.
arg
the same thing happened to me recently. i lost 2/3 of my music. the folders are there but empty. the lost music is a combination of music ripped from CDs (some of which i no longer have) and music homeshared from my daughters. GONE.

Thank you for the info! I always get free downloads with my vinyl purchases and I don't play them on my phone because I don't know how to play shiz outside of itunes/spotify. Was just thinking this morning that there must be something better out there. Will definitely look into this program!

Think I'm going this route. Just want to make sure that the Google Play music library will also be updated. I think it's possible but haven't tried it out yet.
itrainmonkeys would you be able to just drag and drop your entire library back into itunes? Then at least the location of whatever's not gone for good will be re-recognized.

I tried to have it just re-locate my library folder and iTunes was supposed to be making a copy of whatever was imported but for some reason a ton of the stuff that I added by CD is nowhere to be found and if I try dragging and dropping I'm concerned about having a ton of duplicates. Also annoying when I tell an album where the file is located and then it can't find the other files in the same folder. I also think I caused more problems simply by trying to fix it last night in a hurry so now I have two music folders that I have to go through.
The biggest problem is going to be live shows/sets that are missing. I'm not going to know for sure how bad the damage is until I really dive into it tomorrow/this weekend but when I first encountered it last night I was shocked and just deflated into a pity party for myself. I guess if the worst thing that happens this week is me having to go through and fix/update my music library then I'm in pretty good shape.

For me....the Grrrr comes in because of how much time I spent on the library. I've tediously gone through and edited track names/artist names and also have made a ton of my own album art for live shows or things that didn't have artwork. Just feels like such a waste but now I'm going to be extra hardcore about backing everything up regularly.

itrainmonkeys for my google music, I just have google monitor folders for new stuff. I have one large directory ''music'and whenever something gets added to that folder, google uploads it.
Its especially nice to set it up this way, because once you hit your free limit (20k songs) you can delete old stuff from the cloud, and google wont re-add it when it uploads, only the new additions to the "monitored" folder. its entirely independent of the local media player.

When you created the aartworks edited the track info, did you save it to the file's Id3 tag or just within itunes? Basically you can edit the actual data within the audio file that id's it (not filename, within the actual file) or you can basically create an 'avatar' for that file within itunes, that just associates a .jpg and artist/track etc with that file within the media player itself. If you saved to the id3 tag all of that will import with the file into media monkey (or any other media player. My custom art for live shows uploaded to my google music). All may not be lost!

I did everything through iTunes so I'm not sure if that stuff is saved anywhere.
Good to know about the google play stuff. My issue with Google Play has been that I'll add an album to my iTunes but then change a bunch of stuff and it then has both versions up on Google. Like....instead of "Jay-Z featuring Eminem" as the artist I change it to Jay-Z but it doesn't update the google play one.....so now I have two music libraries that I feel the need to organize lol

Another question snowmanomura - I do have a handful of "iTunes purchased" items like mixes or friend's albums. Does Media Monkey allow me to play/import those? Or like....if I've bought TV Episodes or movies (or plan to buy something in the future) can I access them through Media Monkey or do I have to just get it in iTunes and use it there.

itrainmonkeys google music and itunes don't have a true "sync" so if you change metadata in itunes, it doesn't automatically update google music. you'd either have to manually edit in google music, or delete the offending tracks and reupload.
but this does present a fun experiment! in your itunes music that does work, find a song that has discrepancies between google music and itunes (eg: jay-z feat. eminem) and delete it in google music. then reupload it (with the edited information that you want) to google music. If it uploads with the updated info, then that means you edited the Id3 tags of the file, rather than just editing in iTunes. which is good, because it means if you import your library to a new media player, then all that custom artwork and artist edits and stuff will import with it. if it doesn't work, then you probably just made those changes within itunes.
also, for some of your google music stuff, check to see if google has any "suggestions" which may make organizing that library easier. basically when you "upload" to google music, google just cross checks your personal library with their huge database of music. If songs within your library don't exist in theirs, they are uploaded. if they do, google just makes note of it. so when you are playing a popular song, you are really just playing google's song (its why sometimes you may get a "clean" version of a song...you need to tell google you want the explicit version, even if the explicit is the one in your library). if you have songs in your library that only partially match songs in their database, they will "suggest" changes to them to match their database. these suggestions can be hit or miss, but its great for organizing your library when you accidentally uploaded Jay-Z "the bluprnt" or something, and have since edited it in itunes.
if your google library is really FUBAR, make all your changes locally, make sure its saved to the ID3 tag, and then just create a new google library.
as far as the DRM stuff goes, that's part of apple's grip on digital download control. so media monkey can't play it. but, a little google fu can tell you how to wipe DRM from tracks or shows and stuff.

I'm going to be referring to this thread over the next few days. Will let you know how I make out and if I have any questions. Concert tonight after work but the next few days will be "music library fixing" time
