There was no emphasis to suggest the de is separate...it could also be defeated but thought the way I first posted it sounded more likely since we are talking about shoes.

I doubt there's any real significance to the repeated number nine. DJ JD has made several Beatles (and Rutles) references before so I'm assuming he's a Beatles fan. And speaking as someone who is unhealthily obsessed with the Beatles...I cannot EVER hear the words "number nine" without repeating it ala Revolution 9. So it doesn't really strike me as anything too noteworthy, lol.

There are Sketchers shoes called 'Z-Strap' shoes...they strap on/off and can be removed....don't know if this helps...but lots of 'Z' talk floating around anyway - made me think of this.

Just got the audio of this clue from metrocknroll, it's up on the website now. Thought I'd mention it in case anyone missed it and wanted to hear for themselves if you're wondering about "tennis shoes" vs "ten issues" or defeated/de-feeted or anything.
We seem to have hit a wall with this clue REALLY fast. Got a few good guesses out there and then the conversation just died! ;D
If tennis shoes can be defeated/de-feeted, what kind of shoe couldn't be? Or...what would you use to defeat/de-feet tennis shoes? idk, just musing in case it makes someone think of something.
2/5- Papadosio 3/3- MUSE 3/12- John Mayer 3/19- The Werks 3/31- Passion Pit 4/18- Ben Folds 4/20- Against Me! 6/10- Bonnaroo 6/30- Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey

A Horseshoe can't be de-feeted cause a horse doesn't have feet.
