So, who here was part of the Radiohead campout and impending stampede? That was crazy. A few people around me fell and were trampled. I never ran faster in my life partly from sheer exhilaration and fear. I got there at 7:30 am and waited until 8:30 pm. I was worth every minute of it.
P.S. A cashier at Wendy's in Manchester told me 7 people died as of Sunday morning. Crazy.
My friends and I were right at the gate when security removed the barracade, they took off running I started to and realized that I wasn't going to run that whole way, so I just met up with them at the front....my friend found a glass piece while running, he picked it up in one fluid motion without stopping, funny!

We ran to get a spot too and one of the security guards tripped my friend, he says it was on purpose, and he got a big gash on his knee but got right back up and secured us our spot.
I was reeeeeeally close during Elvis Costello, but it got so insane I had to leave. I started to leave to go to the bathroom, and after tripping over a million people in just a few feet, I realized there was no way in hell I'd be getting back. So, I went back, tripped over everyone again, and told my friends we had to get out of there. I was seriously afraid I would get trampled. We still got an excellent spot, and it was one hell of a show.
I actually couldn't handle it anymore, and went to the back at Raidohead. TOTALLY different feeling, from being up close to being in the back. Still incredible.
Hell yes! It became very aggressive down there up front. People were near hostile. I'm sorry, but the folks who get down there early should be the ones who are up front. You don't just get there whenever you feel like it and shove people who've been there all day out of the way. Our blanket was absolutely trampled, and I caught one guy standing right on top of my sandals after I'd taken them off.
But, further back, it was completely different. Everyone was REALLY friendly, courteous, and pumped. Two dudes shared a bowl w/ me, and one of them ended up dancing along with me (it got to the point where I was so excited all I could do was jump up and down as high as I possibly could). We all sang together, waved our hands in the air, and were just happy to be there, no matter where we were standing.
That is exactly my situation moonsky...I started getting real uncomfortable before Beck came on, so I tried to get out of the crowd to get a beer and I got back a few rows and realized I wasn't going to be able to get out, I was in the center front so I had a damn long way to go...after Beck I fought my way through to the back, so much better, found people who smoked a bowl with me, had some beers really had a good time!

That is my story exactly.
Except we stayed up front the whole time even though it was very very difficult. By the time Radiohead played, people had crowded onto BOTH of our blankets! The three of us could barely even sit down in the space we had tried to preserve.
So what happened up there? Did they pull down a barricade or something to free up room?
We were back right around the camera scaffolding and ended up shooting forward more than a few steps when the crowd caved in. It was kind of weird and part of me was wondering if everything was alright up front -- ya know -- I was concerned for the folks up there for a good five minutes, then Radiohead came on...
Yeah, I was in it and it was fun. What was not fun was me and another guy were forced to stand up while everybody in a 15 person radius was sitting down because of 3 drugged out assholes next to us were all sprawled out laying on the ground when they could have sat up and let us sit down. But, no, they must have assumed that the guy and I enjoyed standing hovering over them for an hour and a half. Show was worth it, though. VIDEOTAPE.

They did pull away the barricade about halfway through the show, I think like 2 or 3 songs before Fake Plastic Trees. They needed to make room for a golf cart to come through, which, by the way, ran right over my poster that i had put on the other side of the barricade. It did make more space up front but I never found out what had happened, it seemed like an emergency.
we were about 50 yards back from the house-left video monitor (the one that crapped out first). we had a trooper in our crew who staked out that spot before Elvis Costello, and pretty much hung there for the rest of the day.
It was all fun and games until three shady chicks came up behind us and literally laid their blanket down ON TOP of ours, literally cutting the space we'd saved in half.
yeah...i was walking in to centeroo and saw all you crazies running to the front...i walked up and my friends and I found a reasonable area that became our goal for later in the afternoon...actually, i think i spotted kampy and wanted to sneak back up later to meet him and thank him for the ticket trade but that would later become impossible...i wanted to see dungen (so f-ing glad i caught that) and clap your hands (too bad they had technical probs - normally, they're great) so we left...came back in the middle of elvis costello and got to the "goal area"...then unfortunately had to deal with some crazies pushing to the front for beck and or radiohead...
in between sets though, met lots of cool people while sitting practically on top of each other for 1.5 hours...when my a$$ fell asleep from sitting on rocks i created an a$$ cushion out of empty beer cups, which worked surprisingly well...i thought the set was great and the energy was incredible...
I made it up to the sound booth with absolutly no problems and I got there a song late.
sometimes, the whole "I'm gonna camp out all day and get this choice spot" approach works the exact same way as "I'm going to take my time and work my way up to the best spot I can get"
I never really had a problem getting close for anything. Our key was to go all the way to the left of the stage and then move up as far as we could. It worked out really great for Steele Pulse, Oysterhead, Beck , Radiohead, Elvis, and Phil Lesh. Two of us left in between Beck and Radiohead and still were able to get back up close. It was also never too far from the bathrooms, beer, and food. Good times.
stories like that make me glad I stayed in the back. we camped out a nice spot for beck about 200 feet from the back fence next to the beer tent in the middle of the field. had a nice relax/resting our eyes durring beck, and then had plenty of room for dancing and walking to the beer tent 20 times durring radiohead.

As far as the "emergency" I saw some medic staff members carryign one of those plastic things that they carry a person on. They were trying to find someone "near the pizza vendor". It seemed like hell trying to find anyone anywhere on the farm

I was most pumped for radiohead and I thought of going real early to get a good spot but then I realized that it was not worth missing a full afternoon of killer music at the other stage/tents. We got there before beck and got a spot just to the right of the sound tent. It worked out perfect, BEST SHOW EVER!

I think I saw that, too. Was it right before the show near the right side of the stage?

I saw a guy getting carried out near there and he started yelling (can't remember the name exactly, we'll go with Frank) "Frank! Frank!! Where are you?!?! I can't see you!!"

this was my wife and I last year at DMB. We are HUGE DMB fans and we got there 1.5 hrs before the show, there were like 4 people between us and the barricade. As soon as I came time for the show to start, a huge rush of people camepushing and shoving to the front.
I can't tell you how many times I have heard my wife say the same thing you did about being there early and all. People stepping all over your shoes blankets and toes, arrgg!!!
Even still, we were OK for about the first hour, everyone was standing, there was no chance of sitting at this point, and grooving along with us, but it seemed to get worse and worse as the show went on. I just ain't a real big fan of having some guy's azz all pushed up in my crotch and another guys crotch all pushed up into my azz.
The straw that broke the back, however, was not the crowd, but rather an innocent little plant!
about an hour or so in, I pulled out a nice doob and fired it up, my wife, who is an extremely light to non-toker, decided she wanted a hit, then another, then another. I told her to stop at 2 or 3, BBUUTT NNOO!!
10 mintues later we were working our way through a sea of bodies trying to get to a less crowded area becasue my stoned out of her gourd wife needed to sit down.
And of course we had to pick the best place in the whole main stage area to sit. Right behind the beer tent with that big azz spotlight shining right in our faces.
Oh good times!!!!!
I was Far rear right for Beck, and in the camping area for Radiohead, so, no fun for me this year with the crowds.
