Just saw Lorde at The Anthem in D.C. This is a bit biased since I am a huge fan of her, but it was such an incredible show. I was at her Lolla set, but it was cut short due to rain, so I’ve been dying to see her. This was the only GA show of her North American leg and the energy was insane. Her first opening act, Mitski, was a bit dull, but her second one, Run The Jewels, was awesome. Those guys know how to energize a crowd. As for Lorde, she was amazing. The dancers and the floating box just put the show on a whole nother level. I recommend you check her out before her tour ends.

Saw King Krule tonight. Their first ever show in Austin and my first time seeing them. I've been listening to their stuff since mid-2013, so it was highly-anticipated and long-awaited for me. It was very well worth the wait. The way they space out and jam their songs in a different way than on record is fascinating. It's like dark psych-alt-jazz-jam-rock. Crowd was super into them, crowd-surfing, even some moshing. Set was about an hour-20 min. 19 songs + an encore and a new one (newer than The OOZ). Definitely see them if they come through your town or if you're going to Coachella.

saw them in Houston, it was great. all of the above.
HOWEVER that was probably the worst crowd I've ever been a part of. I was embarrassed. Everyone was talking so loud, and not in a way that's like "oh these two people next to me wouldn't shut up" (which also happened). At some point they were playing a slower quieter song, and I could barely hear him singing. He made a quiet comment into the mic and then they all just stood there not playing, arms folded for about 2-3 minutes just listening to everyone, it was awful. Then they started a little jam and got progressively louder and then launched into Dolphin Love. Crowd eventually got more into it, big sing a long for Baby Blue and Easy Easy. But fuck, it was pretty bad. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't ever come back to houston.

whaaat that sucks about the crowd. Archie said something about “how come we’ve never been here before?”. Awesome that yall got Dolphin Love at least. They didnt play that last night..
i mean there was crowd surfing, a girl got on stage, the sing alongs, but everyone like 25 feet back was just there to be there? Japanese breakfast was going on upstairs and was sold out so maybe people went to that, couldn't get in, and decided to check out Krule idk.

She only played the Anthem?
When I saw her in Chicago she packed out an 18,000 seat arena. It was also AMAZING. One of the best shows I've seen in a while.

Yeah, I guess the arena here was booked. However, I’m so happy it was at The Anthem. It made it a more intimate experience. Props to the guys at I.M.P for fitting the stage in there.

Kinda related. We went to see Gillian Welch Mon. night. I gotta say folk/bluegrass whatever you want to call it shows are the most respectful. Like almost too respectful. They're so quiet during the music, then polite applause. There's always one woman yelling random things and one guy yelling out the same song request. It's a breath of fresh air compared to most shows. But I said to wife, this is great but I'd like to see them when the crowd is a little bit more rowdy.

saw jungle last night with mrs. snowman at the crescent ballroom, a ~500 person club in phoenix. Saw them there a few years ago right as their album came out and was absolutely blown away; the wife was worried this show would be a bit of a let down in comparison, but it wasn't. The two frontmen have a simple forumala: write some good songs, and then put together a tight backing band to play them. Their two drummers were phenomenal, and played off each other really well. A multi instrumentalist rotated through bass/guitar/synths as needed, and offered a bit of improv and flourish on the guitar. the also had two back up singers, who were beautiful and sounded great when they could be heard, but were a bit quiet in the mix. The crowd was pretty hype, lots of people there getting ready to leave for coachella today/tomorrow. They played probably 5 new songs; one had their sorta typical sound during the verse and then a really poppy, hook on the chorus that my wife thought sounded like something from early passion pit. They had another that sounded a bit like a synth-heavy Woods song, kinda veering into psych territory in the bridge and creating space for a little guitar jam I thought was pretty cool. One of the other new ones had a like a tropical disco house feel to it; dunno how it will sound on record but lots of syncopation and polyrhythms from the drums and percussion. The other two new ones were pretty mellow, slower than jungle's typically mid-tempo pace. I left halfway through one to grab a beer. Overall I thought the show was great and they have grown as performers since the last time I saw them, reading and engaging the crowd, embellishing the songs a bit.

That was a much better write up than when I saw them back in November lol. Glad you had a fun time and enjoyed the new songs
Saw an early evening White Denim set earlier today. Lasted about 95 minutes. Lotta old stuff but also a few new ones in the middle. Only about 150 people got tickets, it was basically in a backyard of an east Austin home. Really intimate vibe. Fun set. Austin's best jam band. Catch em on tour in the southeast up through the east coast in June.

Fuck that's awesome. White Denim are easily one of my favorite live bands. In any and all of their iterations they always put on such a ripping show. Real stoked you got to see that.
Queens of the Stone Age fucking rocked tonight. Josh Homme wasn't a dick. Jon Theodore's drumming is on another level. He added a ton of fills into songs that just sounded unreal. Mikey Shulman is a really underrated bassist of this era. Shreds and has a great tone. It was also his birthday, (It wasn't, but Josh told the crowd it was, so they sang "Happy Birthday" to him). Troy and Dean kicked ass. Best show out of the 5 times i've seen them. 2 hours and some change, 21 songs, 2 songs off the first record. I think they nearly filled up the austin360 Amphitheater, there were a lot of people.
Wolf Alice was really good too. Wish i had seen all of their set but i got there in time for 3 or 4 songs.
Clutch played Passive Restraints last night. Suck it, sang_xcx.
There's a new venue in Greenville that's trying to book them. People asked and they said that Carolina Rebellion has a nasty radius clause. So I'm probably going to be able to see them here later this year.

It isn't going to be the same though with the new album coming out. I think they played one song off the new album and everything else was just whatever they wanted to play. They played something off Strange Cousins and Jam Room which is the first time I've seen pretty much anything off those since they came out.

Ty Segall was great Thursday and Friday. Bookended both sets with Wave Goodbye, first one had more newer stuff, second deeper cuts (played a lot of twins). Brought his wife out for meaning. Played She both nights, song shreds live. Highly recommend.

Keller Williams Grateful Grass is such a blast. Getting to hear him play the bluegrass version of Shakedown Street with Andy Falco of the Stringdusters was pure bliss.
Also, if Toubab Krewe swings by your town you should def check them out.

Saw Foo Fighters for the first time Tuesday night - Rupp Arena in Lexington
I'm not a huge fan, just a greatest hits fan. But they were fantastic. Played just shy of 3 hours, jammed out their songs, played a bunch of fun covers and all the songs I'd want to hear. It didn't persuade me to suddenly dive deep into their catalog, but the show was a blast. Also, Taylor Hawkins is a beast.
LEVITATION was cool. Kind of had a weird, aftershow vibe, like we had all just gotten back from the actual outdoor LEVITATION festival at some park. Another con was the pricing. Next year i hope they release some sort of wristband that gets you into whatever, with priority and secondary lines. SXSW-style. But the pros out-weighed the cons for sure. Almost every night show had some sort of unique, trippy light show experience. Holy Wave was immersed in a palette of colorful-visuals to go along with their performance of their new record, Adult Fear, at Cheer Up Charlie's on Thursday. Projection rigs were being set up during the late-afternoon Ty Segall/Ron Gallo set at Barracuda on Friday. Ministry had their own thing going, including a giant inflated rat with Trump-hair and a crossed-out swastika on it's belly, at their Saturday night takeover of Emo's with Chelsea Wolfe. The Black Angels would take the cake though. Of course the band that created this whole shindig 10 years ago, would present the most complete and psychedelic visualities. Even their opener The Brian Jonestown Massacre, despite playing their set in the daylight, had some sort of unidentifiable projection on Stubbs' awning. I'm not sure it even counted as an official LEVITATION gig or not but Thee Oh Sees at Hotel Vegas on Monday had a bunch of great projections as well. Every show sounded great, sometimes too good (Ty Segall was LOUD and fucked my hearing up to this day). Overall I had a better experience at each of these concerts than any of the sxsw shows i went to this year.
1. The Black Angels at Stubbs 4.29 /// 2. Thee Oh Sees at Hotel Vegas 4.30 /// 3. Ty Segall at Barracuda 4.27 /// 4. Ron Gallo at Barracuda 4.27 /// 5. Annabelle Chairlegs at Stubbs 4.29 6. Chelsea Wolfe at Emo's 4.28 /// 7. Ringo Deathstarr at Beerland 4.26 /// 8. Holy Wave at Cheer Up Charlie's 4.26 /// 9. Ministry at Emo's 4.28 /// 10. The Brian Jonestown Massacre at Stubbs 4.29
After all that madness was over I went to the Jack White show on Wednesday. I understand what his anti-phone policy is about, but i think it was kind of stupid. Phones aren't anymore distracting than people talking or walking around you, or any number of things. He wants us to be fully immersed into the show, yet he makes us completely leave sight of the gig by putting the phone-zone area behind the lawn (if you knew the layout of the Austin360 Ampitheater you'd know this is in a complete separate part of premises, away from any view of the stage). His set was dope, they played some really rare White Stripes songs like I Think I Smell a Rat, Death Letter and Little Bird. I love hearing the Stripes stuff with a full band like he currently has. It adds so much color and feeling to songs we know so well. Hotel Yorba and We're Going to be Friends stood out in that way. I dig the weirdness that is Boarding House Reach, and those songs were jammin live. It's just that feeling my phone vibrating and not being able to see it, was probably more distracting/annoying than actually having my phone out. If he keeps this policy going into future tours, i'm probably not going, unless he's at a festival. His opener, Austin-favorite A Giant Dog, fucking kicked ass, per usual. Very proud to see them climb the ranks and rise from playing at tiny venues like Hotel Vegas or Beerland to opening for big headliners like Jack White at amphitheaters across Texas.

tUnE-yArDs!!! Holy! Merrill Garbus bodied forth and engulfed me. I've seen them before, but beautiful, enchanting things were happening at this show. Glad I caught them again. Powa is really one of my favorite songs of all-time. The entire show was ecstatic; the new songs sounded great live; Merrill was on some next-level shit. I can't say enough good things about tUnE-yArDs.

All of your great stories from the best concert of the year thread last year pretty much got confirmed last night. What a legend, what an insane production.. The visuals were just stelar and filled with psychedelic stuff and politically charged projections. That Jonathan Wilson and the girls from Lucius are playing with him made this even better. Top 3 concerts of the year so far.
David Byrne Holy shit was that David Byrne show great. He gets down, especially for 65. The choreography was wonderful. The band sounded great. Reminded me a lot of the 2013 tour, minus Annie. Love all the Talking Heads songs. The new album is really growing on me too. A must-see show for sure. Edit: Benjamin Clementine was a totally surreal and appreciated start to the Pittsburgh show. Everything else was pretty much the same as the Wilkes-Barre show, except for the crowd being less dancey in the beginning. Man, those Talking Heads tunes never get old.
