Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Itchycoo Park is what it was called. We went and it was a blast, but the bands were not what we are used to at the Roo.
It was very small, not a sell out and I think the plans were to try and make it annual, but it was not a success. From what I understand they lost money on it, and due to that, Bonnaroo took an extra year or two to come to light. They were afraid they would have the same problems that Itchycoo had.
The difference of cousre is the line up.
Here is an Amazon link to buy the DVD. You can see what bands were the on it.
Thats interesting, horrible name though. This reminded me of '03 when they tried to have 2 bonnaroos. The other one was Bonnaroo NE if I remember correctly. They got most of the lineup announced and then had to pull the plug. I'm pretty sure it had to do with the land it was being held on.
They presumably borrowed the name from the Small Faces song, which was about a park near London. What a bad idea though! Did they really think they'd be able to base a FOUR DAY festival around B level rock acts from the 60's and 70's?! I can see a two day thing like this working, if only for the sake of nostalgia, but FOUR DAYS?!
I was there more for the atmosphere. It being in Manchester anyway. I didn't camp and didn't go one of the nights.
I can't be quoted on this, but I believe the attendance was like 25,000 a day, avg.
Compare that with Roo 04 at 90,000 officially, with the TN officials putting the number at 105,000 that year, that is a huge difference.
The thing that hurt Itchycoo I think was lack of advertising. The camp grounds were fairly empty and you could drive right through Bushy Branch rd.
As far as the line up goes, there were some good acts. It gave you a chance to be able to say "I've seen such and such in concert". Nothing compared to what Roo puts on, and certainly not what listen to in my day to day life. There was some nostalgia on the stage though.
I can say this, I would not have driven any where for this as would to roo if I didn't live here!

Crzy info, I had no idea.
A similar festival runs every year here in Wisco. 'Rock Fest'. They gather a bunch of those B-level oldies groups and a few of the cheesier modern groups (Kid Rock, Staind, etc) and put them on one stage throughout the day. They also charge more than Bonnaroo if you pay to camp, and dont get an early-bird special. Pretty sad.

The problem was not that the land, but more with town politics (Riverhead)..they pulled out because the county were giving the promoters for Field Day(Radiohead,Beasties,Beck, Blur) a hard time and didn't think it was worth the hassel, so they refunded everyone's money.
I am still a tad bitter by this being that I am from Riverhead myself , but at the same time, I wouldn't have traveled to TN and met some of awsome fold here on the board

Wow, I never knew there was life before Bonnaroo. But I agree that it's a horrible name-- makes me want to pull out my fingernails everytime I think about it.
There were some good bands on there ,like Iron Butterfly, I didnt know that they have even gotten back together within the past 20 years.

I bought a ticket to Bonnaroo NE in 2003 that would have been my first roo, I missed the first two ,because by the time I went to by the tickets it was sold out. I cant believe that they sold all those tickets before they had secured the land permit/deal.
To me, the name Itchycoo says: Come to this festival if you want to contract a venerial disease. Really small target audience you're hitting with that theme.
