I fully agree. You will hit traffic, to be sure. Plus, there is a good chance that your vehicle will be searched every time you return to the festival and your parking will just get further away each time you return.

Don;t forget the KOA campground right behind the mainstage - its quiet camping with shade; hot tub; flush toilets; swimming pool and a multiple limos (yes LIMOS) that take you right to the stage. A great compromise for a generation gap and actually closer to the main two stages than most every camping area.
Google search Manchester KOA
that is exactly what i was going to suggest! i'm sure they'd have a much more lax policy regarding pets, as well!

Yeah, the experience I've had with the traffic (which is very little) is that it's pretty bad all day, every day. I would strongly urge you to think of an alternative to having to leave the fest every 3 hours.
And while I hate to mention this, you should also know: the "rumored" lineup that has been going around, with Modest Mouse and Tom Waits, is highly suspect and not confirmed. Most of us here are wishing it to be true, but we have no guarantees yet as to who will be there. So if your son is looking for specific artists, definitely watch for the Official lineup announcement, which is still forthcoming. Personally, I too hope MM and Waits are there.

You weren't kidding about the hotels begin booked. I couldn't find availability at any of the Manchester hotels.
My husband called the campground. Their rates are almost $800 for the festival payable upfront. We'll have to think about that one, since we'd still have to rent the RV. That's not a bad deal, especially if it's that close, but we're not crazy about the idea of paying that much upfront for a campsite, before seeing the official lineup.
I read through most of the VIP thread, but I'm not sure how going VIP would help us that much, if we can't find a hotel nearby. I'll read the rest of the thread now, in case I missed that part.

The problem with VIP is that the tickets come in pairs and there will be 3 of them.... Also it is very expensive (although I would pay it if I could afford it!) - I think $1200+ for 2. And they still will not be able to take the dog.

hey clued-in mom, I don't mean to incur the wrath of all the Roo faithful, but if you live in Tampa there are a couple of festivals in Florida worth checking into as well. Look at Langerado in Sunrise, FL this March 9-10-11, and Wanee Festival, April 13-14. Of course, I go to Bonnaroo every year so I'm not discouraging you from going, just thought you might want to check out some other options more local to you. ;D

Such is life. We encounter quite a few things that are set up for a couple or a family of 4. Oh well, I guess it would be worse for a family of 5. I'd be so tempted to go the VIP route & bring along a friend, if it wasn't for the fact that we can't bring Molly that way either.

We don't board our dogs either, my sister-in-law stays at the house..
I wish we had that option. You're lucky! Unfortunately, our entire family is in NC. We're the only ones who moved away. We left her with the neighbors across the street once & she wouldn't eat. When we got home, she had lost so much weight.

Thanks for the tip. That is too funny. I've looked up info on festivals in California, Austin TX, Milwaukee WI, etc. & had no idea there was any festivals in FL. I'll definitely Google those.
I'm so glad I found this board!!! I've been attempting to plan a trip to Bonnaroo, & need lots of help.
The last poster said what I was gonna, but let me go a step further: Visit this site and call them directly, ASAP: www.koa.com/where/tn/42102/
Consider doing the KOA thing with an RV. There's even a possibility pets are okay. They have a rate for the entire festival and they have a quick limo service to Centeroo (and they are literally right next door to the festival property). The people that run it are incredibly sweet. More to the point, with a pool and hot tub you might get some real relaxing in there!
Get tickets/KOA/RV reservations as quickly as possible-- but wait until tickets are officially on sale (don't worry about the presale, this is essentially the first year they've ever done that sort of presale on fewer than 10% of the tickets; but get them from Bonnaroo.com ASAP). Consider going VIP if you have the money and kennel the dog (no KOA then), that's the best way to manage your experience with food/proximity, etc.
The good news is, there should be a week or more between when the bands are announced and when tickets should go on sale, so you should have time to decide if you really want to go. BUT if you are set now, I would go ahead and get the KOA/RV reserved before the bands, because those things will sell out even before tickets. I know KOA still had slots left a week or two ago.

My husband did call the KOA, & they have availability. They were the ones who asked a little < $800 upfront for the campsite. We're hesitant to do that w/o seeing the official lineup 1st. I'm exploring other options now, so we can do something ASAP.
Does anyone know the physical address for Manchester Farm? I've tried a Google search & keep coming up with a generic Manchester, TN addy. It would help to know exactly where in Manchester, so I would know which outlying towns to look for accommodations in.
try bushy branch rd for an address... sorry I don't have much more specific.
The only towns around there that I can think of that would have lodging might be Tullahoma, Shelbyville, McMinnville, or even Monteagle or Murfreesboro (those last 2 are both ~30 mins but still probably fill up their hotels for 'roo)
Can you ask the KOA if they will book it now, take your money, than if the artist announcement is no good (I don't think so) you can cancel...It's not like they wont be able to rent the site out if you cancel by something like March 1st.

Thanks again for your help.[/quote]
The KOA address is 586 Campground Rd - but best I can tell there ain't no outlying towns ;D
The KOA will sell out, so you should be able to get your $ back. I've camped at Bonnaroo and at the KOA and cost no object KOA rules.

well the cost isn't TOO bad, especially considering the amenities and closeness to roo (see, no commute)
roughly VIP x3 (if you can work out splitting a pair with someone else) would be at least $1800 KoA + 3 GA tickets at (this is a guess here) 250 would be $1550
plus it looks like they allow pets, and you'll be able to just chill out at the campsite/pool/jacuzzi if you don't feel like seeing shows all day. and with the site so close, your son can walk/limo over himself and roo it up to his heart's content.

The more hotel research I do, the more likelihood we'll end up booking at the KOA. I can't find any vacancies 30+ miles away.
As much as I'm looking forward to seeing my son's excitement at Roo, I'm also an overprotective mom. I wouldn't let him out of our site in a crowd that big. Guess I'm not such a cool mom after all.

naw, you're plenty cool. my mom would've been the same way when i was that age lol
most moms probably wouldn't even CONSIDER going to roo for a family vacation!
I've taken my kids to roo several times (11 and 13 now), and let me tell ya, If you DID let them out of your site, then you would be VERY uncool. Your are absolutely doing the right thing by staying with your son thewhole time. There way too many temptations at roo for kid that age w/no parent around!!
KOA is a great option for your situation, they are right there, actually closer than some of the GA spots, and I think the have shuttle service to the farm.
Im pretty sure you can bring your dog as well! The atmosphere at KOA that weekend will be PRIMO!! And the crowd will be respectful to you son....
Good luck on whatever you decide, but know this, even if the line up isn't exactly what you want, you wil still have the times of your lives, and I guarantee, mom and dad will find something they like too!!

I think maybe they hold certain rooms aside for Bonnaroo, because once the tickets go on sale, the official website also sells "hotel packages." They are definitely closer to the site than 30 miles, we stopped at one when I was on the airport shuttle last year, a Howard Johnson's I think. They definitely sell those packages every year, so I'm thinking there are rooms, they are just on hold...
Although I think KOA would be much more fun for your son and allow him to see all the shows he wants (well, as long as you guys are still awake!) ;D Your first roo is always pretty exhausting. If you'll have an RV bring lots of fruit and water, and I recommend an energy/protein bar in the morning, even if you don't usually eat breakfast - it helps!

They have LIMO"s now - no vans; no walking. Real honest to god LIMO's. 2 years ago they gave us ALL ACCESS EMPLoyee wristbands which worked out pretty well!
THere will be lots of other folks in your shoes at KOA - that is - with kids.
It is a really chilled out spot - at night best I can tell really quiet. Definetly quiet when we come rolling in 4 AM ish. Real Shade is a big bonus and I'm telling you the pool feels just outstanding after a long afternoon of music and fun. ALso feels pretty darn good first thing in the morning.
Barb and Jerry run the place and are as cool as can be.
Some KOA's have Kamping Kabins. This might be one alternative if you don't want to rent a RV.
Another option is some camper/RV rental places will deliver the camper to the campground. This was all you have to do is drive to the campground in your own car, use the camper for the time it is rented and leave when you are done.
Call the campground to see if they know a RV dealership that does this, or call local RV dealerships in the area.

More options to explore! It's a good thing I love planning vacations. ;D I didn't realize they offered hotel packages at ticket release. That's really good to know. I never would have thought to have an RV delivered to the campground either. As I mentioned earlier, we used to own one, so we've never rented. That would definitely be more convenient. We'll inquire about the option of Camping Cabins also. I really miss camping. It's definitely a laid back vacation. Maybe, I've been panicking over accommodations for nothing. Surely, we can get one of the options to work for us.
Two more questions:
What is the masquerade ball I've been reading about & is it adults only?
Is there really people who have casual sex in plain view?
I think I may be reading too much info. So far I've read about many things that go on at the festival & only 2 things I don't think I would be real happy about. I dont' want a free show of people having sex in plain view. I also wouldn't be real happy if I was the poor guy who had a tent by the guy who used the ground outside his tent as his own private restroom. Can you imagine the smell in that heat? Ewwwwww is all I can say.

Thanks again. You guys are great, & full of info.
I will answer the question about people having sex in plain view. I didn't see any. Most of the naked people were naked not in a sexual way, but to be comfortable and free. Some were body painted head to toe, some not, but from what I saw there was nothing sexual about it. It was just hippies being hippies
I am also sure that most people would not be using the ground outside the tent as a restroom. There are more than enough clean porta potties in the campgrounds so that really isn't an issue I don't think. They are cleaned multiple times a day, and the ones near our tents were spotless.

The masquerade ball is just costume only and it's pretty fun-- pretty much just a surprise band in a tent with everyone dressed (and some pretty impressive costumes too).
And I've never seen casual sex in plain view there. I've seen about it on the internet after the fact with people talking, but I'd say it's incredibly rare, like a Unicorn.
