Hey everyone. this will be my first time at bonnaroo (and first festival too!) Ive been spending many hours reading through this forum, and you guys really are full of information! my friends have been looking at me crazy wondering how i already know we need a tarp for over the tent.. haha. ok anyway.
speaking of these friends.. they are driving and i am flying in on friday. how will i meet them? ive read the thread on cells. .. i have nextel and im pretty hopeful at least the texting will work, but what im wondering is two things:
1. are there any really obvious meeting places where you have been able to meet your friends before?
2. how far is the camping only section (where i assume the airport shuttle is dropping me) from the section where my friends will be with there car and tent?
ok and one more mini questions.. a. is the camping organized in any order where they would be able to give me the location of their tent?
thanks a bunch...! and now im off to read more and more and more and more.......
You'll never find their tent on your own. Your best bet is to meet them at the mushroom fountain in centeroo. It's the easiest place to find so meeting up shouldn't be a problem. Then just have them show you where they are camped and you should be able to find them all week.
Most likely not. If your gonna have all your camping gear and everything they probably won't let you into centeroo. I'm assuming you want to meet up and camp with your friends? I would say your best bet is to make a quick set up in tent only camping and then meet your friends. Then just go pick your stuff up and follow them back to your camping area. Otherwise you could make plans to meet them at the main gate outside centeroo and then go from there. Sounds complicated but honestly if you plan on just getting a hold of your friends with a cell phone and getting directions from them you could spend an entire day looking for their camp. Meeting outside Centeroo is probably the easiest thing to do.
I had to meet up with some friends last year...cell phone worked wonders...but we weren't able to get next to each other camping wise. The entire tent city is set up on a huge grid which was helpful in meeting up....for example meet you at the corner of 9th and 2nd type stuff kept happening. Think like NYC but with tents instead of massive buildings...also the differenet camping areas have names but you should stick to the roads to meet up. Umphreak seems to have it down though...by setting up temp. in tent only then hoffing it over to your buddies. Good luck!

yeah its a lot easier ot meet your friends than one who's neevr been woudl think. two people in our group came by plane last eyar and we met them no problem, the cell phone should work fine but just inc ase it doesn't you should set up a back-up plan
It's just a lot harder if you've never been before. '04 was my second 'Roo so i was pretty familiar with the farm and I still never ended up finding one of my friends. I must have talked on the phone with him 3 or 4 different times giving him directions as he walked and we still never found each other. Maybe he was just an idiot but everything looks the same. It's just row after row of tents.

awesome advice! i guess that will be pretty easy if its set up in a grid-like system. i will prolly do the "if our cells dont work, lets meet here at..... " maybe the entrance to centeroo. is there one big main entrance? i do plan on camping with them, even tho i realize that i will have the better camp spot if i am dropped off by the shuttle. but i guess i will have to backtrack and hoof it to their spot. with my luck they will be like a 30 minute walk from centeroo!!
what ever happened to the friend you didnt meet ?
this actually leads me to another question. how much room is there near where you park your car? enough room for 2 or 3 tents?
It is alot easier to find people's campsites nowadays, with all the pods set up. Last year we set up an extra tent at our campsite because 2 people wouldn't be arriving until Friday morning, and we just told them to meet us under the giant balloon marking our area. There are pods with huge numbered balloons floating above them that make it alot easier to explain how to get to your camp.
Well the friend I didn't meet was camped somewhere else. He wasn't planning on camping with us, just meeing up for some drinks and a smoke. I just never ended up running into him. Just have your friends set up a spare tent or I'm sure if they let their neighbors know that you will be arriving shortly then they will have no problem making room for you.

Here is the link to the thread with last year's map shown. It will give you an idea of how things are laid out. You will be given one of these maps when you enter the grounds:

last year the shuttle dropped off and picked up at "woodland" avenue (east of VIP on the map), just to give you a starting point
i'd say meeting inside centeroo would probably not be ideal, because you can't bring your stuff in, and as awesome as roo is, i'd feel somewhat vulnerable leaving my luggage just sitting in the middle of tent only. and if i remember correctly, on thursday or friday centeroo wasn't open early on (could have just been the entrance i tried, the one with the arch, i dunno) plus it's kind of a ways to have to walk in and then back out to wherever their campsite happens to be.
i'd say if your friends are there first, have one of them come and meet you at the shuttle stop near VIP, that way they can help you carry your luggage too! trust me that can be hard in the heat, especially if they're far away.

ah ok, the entrance i was trying to get in was the one with the arch (since it's closest to tent only!) ... guessing it was closed because it opens right into the mainstage?
That's the entrance I use...but you have to veer off to the right once you go through the arch to get in to Centeroo. If you go straight ahead those are the mainstage gates and they are closed in the mornings and after the headliner is over.

odd, it was a bit of a cluster-f when i tried going in on thursday night, so many people i couldn't see what was going on up ahead but eventually someone came out and told everyone to go to the other entrance. anyway! sorry to detract from the original intent of this post!

i cant believe there really is a map! nice. im booking my flight tonight! so stoked.
ps. good call having them meet me where the shuttle will drop me off.. less work for me. tho i am hoping to drop my gear in my friends car before they leave. i cant take off that many work days -- hence the flying but the shuttle drop off or main arch entry to centeroo sounds like a great spot. watch there will be no arch this year! haha. thanks to allllllll of you!
