So glad Rourke got a nod... also so glad Dark Knight didn't get a Best Picture nod.
I think history will show the Oscars got it way wrong. When a movie is that popular and that critically lauded, ignoring it while forgotten five years from now fare like Frost/Nixon and The Reader makes it obvious it's all politics at the Academy.
'dark knight' definately deserved a nom for best picture imo. its not like it'd win against 'slumdog' anyway but 'the dark knight' was a favorite with the critics and the fans and its just truly a monumental landmark of a film that is undebatebly a better reviewed film than 'the reader'. i just think the oscars have a hard-on for holocaust films. oh well its not like its the first time they got it wrong.
anyway i havent seen the reader or frost/nixon yet but they are both playing in columbia this weekend so i'll try to check them both out soon.
also how did sally hawkins get snubbed in best actress? lame.

I was pretty shocked to see The Reader get a best pic nod and to see Kate Winslet get that instead of Revolutionary Road. I'm calling Frost/Nixon as best pic until I see Slumdog.
And honestly Happy-go-lucky was not good enough for any noms imo. I think its more shocking and lame that Kristin Scott Thomas got jack.
As much as I loved The Dark Knight, I didn't think it deserved a Best Pic nod. The Wrestler should have been nominated instead of The Reader in my opinion. I do think Nolan should have gotten a Best Director nod. I still think Slumdog was the best film of 2008 followed by Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler.

Well while everyone else it out watching these excellent Oscar-worthy films I'm going to opt for something completely different. I'm going to go see a movie tonight that I'm pretty sure is going to make me stupider for having seen it. My Bloody Valentine 3D...jealous?
I just don't think it was Oscar material, personally... especially considering that Batman Begins was better, and that didn't get anything, I think.
Yeah, I'll just have to disagree with you on that. I thought that was a fairly dull movie that had sensitive misreadings on two pretty great villains. The way Nolan wasted Ra al Ghul was particularly disappointing, but what he did with Scarecrow wasn't that much better.
The origins stuff was more interesting than most comic book origins movies, but they kind of sold that part of the story short by having to force in a rematch with al Ghul prematurely.
Also Katie Holmes blew goat balls in that movie. Most annoying love interest since Hayden Christensen in Attack of the Clones...
To me... Batman Begins felt like a superhero movie.
The Dark Knight did not, it seemed a lot more mature and sophisticated. It had a great villain and while Heath has been getting all the glam and media attention for the film.... it was not a joker-centered film like the original Batman. it was centered around the different conflicts and similar goals of three men: Batman, Harvey Dent, and Lt. Gordon. the final scene of the film was what made it an oscar-caliber film IMO.
also... as of today slumdog got bumped to my 2nd favorite film of 2008. i had the extreme pleasure of seeing Let The Right One in today and i have to say i was stunned at how great it was. best horror film ive seen in a loooooong time, if you can even really call it a horror film.
Oscar predictions - Best pic:Slumdog Millionaire Best actor: Sean Penn Best supporting actor: Heath Ledger Best actress: Meryl Streep (possible upset from Kate Winslet)
Not sure about best supporting actress or director.

Personally, Gran Torino was the best film I saw in 08. No doubt. Kills all the other movies in the lineup (with maybe the exception of Doubt which I have not seen). But I think Slumdog Millionaire will win best pic.
Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire Best Actor: Mickey Rourke Best Supp. Actor: Heath Ledger Best Actress: Melissa Leo (If you have not seenh Frozen River, do so IMMEDIATELY!!!) Best Supp. Actress: Penelope Cruz Best director: Danny Boyle-Slumdog Millionaire Best Adapted Screenplay: Peter Morgan-Frost/Nixon Best original Screenplay: Courtney Hunt-Frozen River

^^Melissa Leo was great in Frozen River. Don't think she stands much of a shot against younger actresses in bigger name features, but who knows? Maybe Sally Hawkins getting snubbed gives her a better shot.
Finally saw The Visitor tonight. Great movie. Hopefully Richard Jenkins keeps getting quality roles, and Thomas McCarthy keeps making great little indies not enough people see.

it got snubbed i think. which sucks considering it was supposedly Clint's last acting role ever. haven't seen it yet but from what i hear it definately is better than his earlier film from last year Changeling.

I LOVE Let the Right One In!!! I've only met two other people who have seen it....I probably should get out more
But isn't it the most amazing...bizarre movie you've seen in a long time?
^ yeah i adored it. especially the end. during the pool scene i was just like "Holy Crap".
SPOILER ALERT!!
with the pool scene some movies dont cross that line of killing little kids. but damn. it crossed that line and did a daaamn good job. also the whole gender twist w/ the castration mark... awesome.
I just saw Doubt... great movie. It felt like a play, as many others have said, but it runs incredibly well as a movie. Great performances and good music, in particular. Highly recommended.
frost/nixon - i dont think its going to win much. it was good, but i felt it had this strange actor playing a role in a fake documentary that had flashbacks to the "real" scenes feel too it. very peculiar. however, the acting of the lead roles was good.

I agree. I thought Batman begins was OK, but couldn;t get into any other superhero movies (Iron Man wasn't bad). Spiderman? Blechhh....Dark Night was great. I looove the shot of the Joker in front of the burning mountain of money. Classic.
I saw Revolutionary Road last night, and wow, Kate Winslet blew my mind! It was different than I thought it would be, a little more depressing than I expected, but still a great movie.

I thought she was amazing in it too. Its surprising to me that she wasn't nominated for this role instead of The Reader.
