I'm thinking about going to see Phish in Knoxville the night before bonnaroo. If I end up doing that I will need a place to stay. I was thinking about driving towards Manchester after the show and camping at a KAO, or something similar, on the way. If anyone knows a good place, I'd really appreciate it.
Rock Island State park is about an hour from Manchester, near McMinnville, TN. It's a beautiful park with car camping, RV hookups and super nice cabins. You'll probably want to make reservations way ahead of time since it may be booked that night because of it's location. Fall Creek Falls is another nice state park, but it may be a little more expensive since it's more of 'tourist' destination.
I have a friend who owns a couple of undeveloped acres in Coffee county...I keep trying to convince her that we need to turn it into a campground at least the week of Roo I think I'm starting to get through to her....
I would stay away from KOA or commercial campgrounds. In the summer time they will charge anywhere from $25-$75 a night depending on the location/time. I'm the manager of a hotel in Cookeville TN, which is about 70 miles from Manchester and 100 from Knoxville. I can get you a nice hotel room for $35 including tax and all. Also, if you're look for free primitive camping check out Virgin Falls/Polly Branch Falls area in Sparta.
As far as state park camping there are several choices: Rock Island State Park in Sparta, Fall Creek Falls State Park in Spencer, Cumberland Mtn State Park in Crossville, and Savage Gulf State Park in Beersheba Springs(sp?).
I would advise you to NOT go to any state park if your are planning on bringing alcohol, corn, or other choice goodies. In october I was the victim of profiling at savage gulf state park, me and some friends were on a backpacking trip, and after a long hike (12+ miles) we decided to camp. Well, 2 1/2 hrs later a park ranger appeared out of the woods with night vision goggles (seriously). Me and 2 friends all recieved simple poss charges. While we were receiving our citations they had broke into my car and ran dogs through it. All because I had a bonnaroo sticker on my car.

Damn that sucks about getting busted by ranger rick.
I appreciate the hotel offer but I don't want to drive much more than an hour after the show, but I'll hit you up if I need it. I might go for Cumberland Mountain State Park. It's only and hour and 15 minutes from Knoxville and only $20 bucks. I'll try not to look like a corn eating hippie. I doubt that they know who Special Ed and the Short Bus (the only sticker on my car) are, so I should be ok.
I think I'm starting to get through to her....
