The White Stripes would be amazing but i would rather have the Beasties headline than the other too. Why did you have to put the idea of the stripes at roo in my head? It would be so amazing.
Widespread Panic was only to counter the Allman Bros. pulling out, remember?
umm any proof of that at all? were the allmans ever scheduled to close the festival? nope. were the allmans one of the 5 i mentioned from last year? nope. was WSP clearly a headliner? yes. i don't how that is either certifiably true or relevant to my argument. they had 5 headliner level sets, they added a 6th, just like they would be doing this year.
Well I guess you have a point, but I still think Widespread Panic wouldn't have been added unless ABB pulled out. They had headlined the year before. Jacky J was gonna headline Sunday (he DID headline Coachella) but moved to Saturday to fill in the ABB spot. Here was the headlines from the email they sent out:
Don't get me wrong, I would love another headliner. I just don't see it in the cards, really. But this is Bonnaroo and they do have a habit of being really, really awesome.
So Phish is a headliner Friday, even though they're playing late night? I don't think they're going to suspend an entire nights late night just so Phish can play. If other bands are playing at the same time...and Phish isn't unopposed, then I'd say they aren't the headliner for that night. If the Beasties, however, play the regular headlining spot, unopposed, then I find it mindblowing if any of the mindlessly Phish-centric folks here still try to say that Phish is headlining Friday.

very good point. they DO stop the presses and let the headliner play every year... they DEFINITELY won't stop the rest of the late nights on a friday night...

The way im looking at it is, unless Phish is playing the same night as Bruce, theyre the headliner of that day. Regardless of who else is playing when they are, or what time theyre playing. Thats the biggest name playing that day, thats the headliner.
We're just getting into semantics now. Of course they won't play unopposed on Friday night. That would be ridiculous. Their true 'headlining' spot is Sunday. It doesn't cheapen them in some way just because there will be other bands playing on Friday night.

this thread is really just turning into bickering about what the real definition of headliner is, IMO if you are the biggest name playing that day youre headlining.
All the buzz friday morning/afternoon/night is going to be Phish's set more so than it is going to be about any other show. I mean it will be the first festival appearance for them since when? yeah...
IMO, if you're playing the same "headlining" spot on the Main Stage that every headliner has played in the history of Bonnaroo...you are the headliner.
Given his argument, Robert Plant & Allison Krauss could be argued to have been the Sunday headliner last year because they are bigger in pretty much every way than Widespread Panic. But was WSP clearly a headliner? Of course. Why? Because they were playing in the headlining spot.

good point but in my mind they essentially were the headliner bc i did not see any of WSP.
Thinking about this again, do you think there were more people at WSP than RP & AK? I would guess not considering what the grounds looked like when we left sunday night but i could be wrong. The way i see it is being the biggest name makes you more of a headliner than just "being in the headlining slot". I cant say how many people were at WSP bc i wasnt, but I dont think its really fair to say a band headlined the festival if they cant even draw one of the biggest crowds of the weekend.
Im completely rambling and thats ok i dont really have anything to say but i just want to talk haha

That's cutting to the core of it, right there. Right on. I would just add that it also has to do with which act on a particular day gets the most hype/promotion/attention by the festival promoters. Again, in this case, it's Phish for Friday, as evidenced by the announcement today.
I was at work all day. I checked my e-mail on my phone and got the announcement. I said to myself, I bet there is already multiple pages about this on inforoo. I am so glad you guys did not let me down. ;D
There will not be another headliner added. As stated before, there are 5 "headline value" acts for only 3 headline. Phish x2, Bruce Springsteen, NIN, Beastie Boys. This already fits PERFECTLY. 3 regular headliners (probably Beastie Boys, Bruce and Phish) and 2 "special" late night What Stage sets (Phish and probably NIN). Unless it hasn't been decided yet if NIN or Beasties will be Headlining or doing the "special" late night.
Sorry to cut your dreams short but neither NIN nor The Beastie Boys are going to be playing before a headliner or on the Which stage.
So...The Dead will not be added. Jay-Z will not be added. Neil Young will not be added. Jane's Addiction will not be added (they're not big enough to headline Bonnaroo anyway...and wouldn't be a headliner improvement over Beastie Boys or NIN)
Sorry for all that but Jesus. Come on guys. Get Logical.
Although adding the Dead would be a dream come true I tend to agree with you Chandler. I have stated this before in other threads "we have our headliners" It actually seems perfect the Beasties>Phish thing on Fri. People are concerned about BB filling the 3hr slot which indeed IS a stretch for them so in my mind it sets phish up perfectly to put on an epic late night super set (4-5 hrs or more)
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
Can I just say this? No matter what happens, Broo is gonna be sick as hell this year. I was getting all caught up in who is playing when, if there's gonna be another headliner, etc. But just think, PHISH. LATENIGHT. WHAT STAGE. (goosebumps) Then think of the lineup we have already. Jebus this is gonna be INSANE!
Wow. The bickering in this thread really sucks. Really, why do we care who is considered the headliner or not on a particular day? Isn't that like being the clean-up hitter on a 5-year old T-ball team? Seriously, this lineup is solid from top to bottom. Why can't we just be happy about it.
Note to mods: Is there any way for me to smite an entire damned thread? I want the last 15 minutes of my life back.

i think theres a lot less bickering than there is just active discussion and excitement about what could/will be
Why does the headliner have to play that time slot? Could it be that this year the headliner on Friday night is playing a late set? Doesn'T make them any less "headlining material" because they aren't playing that 8:30 time slot.
its not about any less headlining material...the headlining spot is so deemed because it takes place on the main stage and there are no other acts that oppose it, period. We all can come to terms with the fact that Phish is obviously a major headlining act in any respect let alone at a fest like "roo and whenever there sets are of course they are "headliners" whether they run opposed or not. --this posted by sexysadie seems likely . Friday: What Stage: 8:30 - 10:30 Beastie Boys 11:30ish - Whenever - Phish
Late Night tent shows: Girl Talk, Crystal Castles, Paul Oakenfold, Animal Collective, Femi Cuti, Galactic
Saturday What Stage: 5:30 - 7:30 Wilco 9:00 - 12:00 Bruce Springsteen 2:30 a.m. NIN special late night performance

This thread is getting ridiculous. Since everyone has an opinion here is mine.
I highly doubt we will be getting any more headliners. Phish is playing the late night Friday, which I think will be earlier than Kanye, but it will be that against whatever else is going on. I highly doubt they will close other stages for them. So conflicts galore in other words. I am guessing Beastie Boys play before them. Nine Inch Nails I have no idea whats gonna happen. Possibly after Bruce, but i dont wanna guess. They seem to big for the Which, but i really have no idea. Before Bruce doesnt seem right either, and I dont want more conflicts. I am going to wait and see.
Phish will of course close out Sunday and there will be tons of people there, comparing it to Widespread Panic doesnt do it Justice, WSP is just a good jam band to close out the festival for the Jam fans, but a large majority will stay for Phish. Break out the fireworks and glowsticks.
I really dont want to get into this whole bickering thing, guessing what will happen gets peoples hopes up way too high, they were crushed with the WSP Claypool major announcement. Speculation is always fun, but arguing about it is ridiculous. Just take it as it is, and let the surprises come.
Its Bonnaroo people, it will be awesome no matter what.
Not that it really matters, but how "Roo has worked in the past is that the main headliner plays Saturday in the 8-11 slot (Radiohead, Police, PJ and now Bruce) The other headlining slots play Friday 8-11 and Sunday 8-11. The only question now is who is playing the Friday headlining slot.

when you go to ben harpers myspace page all of his tourdates have their exact times on them for their performance they vary so he has bonnaroo's listed as 11:45 which will be giving him a late night so saturdays late nights are shaping up to be Mars Volta, Ben Harper, NIN, with Volta and NIN probably only overlapping for a half hour or so, plus with the development of the possibility Yeasayer MGMT in a tent latenight this is going to be an interesting saturday latenight
