I can't believe no one has said David Byrne yet. This was my #1 most anticipated show of the entire weekend. I got my head just right and got all the way to the front left, directly in front of the speakers. Then the show started and it sounded like it was coming from someone's car parked in bfe. The entire time I was there, everyone in the crowd was saying, "TURN IT UP!" but no one ever did. It was just sad. I had to leave because I knew he was gonna play my favorite songs and I couldn't watch them get ruined by bad sound.
I did think it was quiet at first. Maybe it was just for Strange Overtones, because I remember I Zimbra starting and everything locked in. Overall, the sound for that set was the best I heard at which stage
I am a big TVOTR fan and I agree about their sound on the Which. I don't know if it was them or the set-up. I have felt like that for a couple of bands through out the years that have played The Which.
I've seen them three times, twice outside and once inside. By far the best of the three and currenty the best concert I've ever been too was them at The Southgate House(inside) in Newport KY. I thought there set this year was great but I agree that on a couple of songs the vocals were nowhere to be found.
I'd have to say Snoop Dogg really disapointed me. We mad it a point to get up there and catch the whole set and my whole group left after about twenty minutes. It just seemed rehashed and he played a bunch of new crap that was really bad...and I think he knew it.
I was really looking forward to Girl Talk, and then didn't really like it. At that point I was really tired though and I had a bad spot (not under the tent, and in a big mud puddle) so maybe it was me. ...the third time the sound went out, I left.
Also expected a lot more out of Mule as Roo 07 was the best set of the 30 or so I've seen them play.
It seems like every year at Bonnaroo for me, the best stuff is the stuff I just kind of end up at rather than the stuff I plan to go to....I had no intention of going to David Byrne and it was my favorite set of the weekend.
I thought Phish was great on Sunday but Friday sucked. They played too many noob songs which is to be expected but they weren't connecting either. They absolutely murdered the end of Stash and I can't recall too many high points anywhere else either. What sealed the deal was during Velvet Sea when the septic truck apparently couldn't wait another hour until the entire What Stage area was cleared out to empty the toilets. The thing rolled all the way through the field to clean one port-o -john in the middle by the beer tent which I think was either handicapped or VIP or something anyway. Little bit of a buzzkill there.
Animal Collective was definitely my biggest let down and I was looking forward to them so much too. They're just one of those bands that aren't good live in my opinion. I'm surprised at all the people who didn't like MGMT though. I thought they were awesome, but I was also in the second row so I could hear fine and was where a lot of energy was. People went crazy during Electric Feel!
I also left animal collective about 20 minutes in. The sun was oppressive and the sound was so bad I just couldn't convince myself to stay. I wanted their set to be a lot better than it was, for sure.
I thought David Byrne was the best set of Bonnaroo, hands down. Nothing compared, imo.

I agree with you on the whole MGMT thing, I didn't see them at Bonnaroo '08 but I saw them at Lollapalooza '08 and they were amazing for me but people were Criticizing the sound. Anyway I thought MGMT was really fun, they may not have like any energy and not moving around but I thought the crowd was great as you said people were dancing during Electric Feel. Also I LOVED! the lights they were so cool on the ceiling, especially the rainbow effect during electric feel. I had MGMT stuck in my head this whole time just singing their tunes. I am shocked that people are criticizing but that's fine people have opinion's. And I felt like the sound was totally fine. I was near the sound tent and I thought it was great, I even have a video from my phone and I could hear perfectly
While it was still a great show, I thought Bon Iver was a little disappointing... My reasoning is that some of the songs lost some of their luster with the transition to live.
Great show, still. I seriously didn't see a bad set all weekend, sans Charlie Allen's 30 minute Bonnaroo song... jesus, that was terrible.
haha I was front row for Charlie Allen waiting for Alberta Cross (who I adore) and it was the most awkward experience of my life. The man is like a hobo Toby Keith with no talent and the bonnaroo song doesnt encompass what the experience is like at all. it literally just lists the specs of the concert.
im sad to hear people didnt like band of horses. I guess i can see how the energy was pretty low and everytime i stood on my toes and looked around the crowd was bothering me too for not being into it but i was literally the closest person besides the band to ben bridwell and nobody could stop me from enjoying the hell out of that show
on another note i am going to stop reading this thread because TVOTR was the only thing i didnt absolutely adore.
Come to think of it, I couldn't get into any daytime Which sets. I always ended up wandering over to What. Left Animal Collective for Galactic (which was amazing). I just found What to be a much better dancing location during the day, especially when the reggae and funk is pumpin'. My friend's main reason for going was MGMT, and he and my brother ended up passing out at 10:30 on Saturday. I went to see the last half of Bruce, came back for a short nap and slept through my alarm for 2 hours. That sucked, lol.
I know SweetMelissa will crucify me for this, but the only show that I left early was Gov't Mule. The sound was awful and I hate the Which Stage. I'll give them another chance because I love Warren.
I thought the same way and I know sweetM probably disagrees but I thought that there set was lame. I had a fine spot as far as sound is concerned just felt as though Warren was not into it. And personally I did not like all the covers they did (not saying I don't like the songs as I do like every one of them) just seemed like they were rolling through their list of all the covers that they do.
And yes what I sawof Animal Collective before I went over to Galactic (which was about an hour) sucked...
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."

Animal Collective, by far. Awful. We were pretty far back so where we were sitting we were basically just getting bass which was like painfully loud and no melody/vocals/etc. at all. Just brief little blips of melody/vocals inbetween beats. It wasn't just boring, the sound was actually unpleasant to listen to. And I could tell by the crazy amounts of people walking away that I wasn't the only one who felt that way!
I wish I'd been closer for Springsteen - the sound for that show sucked too. Where we were it was like we could barely hear it enough to pick out what song he was playing. And we were in pretty much the same location for the Beastie Boys and the sound was fine then, so it wasn't just the location, just crappy sound systems and/or nobody checking on how it sounded.

Amen, I really wanted to stay for Mule and Volta, I really did! But I just had to leave. Too much... and I'm all about bass!
I like MGMT but they are one of the most overrated bands ever, I stopped by for bit and couldnt believe how crowded it was and the songs I caught were pretty lack luster, plus the new song they played was god awful.
Also the Beastie Boys... I wish that rather than trying to impress Bonnaroo with their Jamming they would have just BEEN THE BEASTIE BOYS and played their stuff.
What are you talking about? They wrote those jams which are on several studio albums. They weren't trying to impress anyone, that was a typical BBoys show, except for the few flubs.
Maybe you're right. I haven't exactly listened to all their albums all the way through. I just know I saw them about 5 years ago and it was an entirely different show. They just rapped for the first 2/3. And it wasn't til the last 1/3 that they took out their instruments. And when they did it was really special and exciting. They played all their hits and rapped a few lesser known songs and fan favorites. They didn't do nearly as much jamming. And I liked it better that way. To me, the Beastie boys are a rap group. I never though of the beastie boys as a 'jam band' or even really a 'band' for that matter. It felt to me like it was all contrived to try and impress bonnaroo[/quote]
Their Bonnaroo set was good mix of everything they've got. There's a fair bit of instrumental music and punk stuff mixed in with the rap on their albums through out the 90s and late 80s. Some of it I consider some of their best work. Something's Got to Give was amazing.

Before I say this please know that I am not a big fan of rap or hip-hop. I heard Snoop Dogg puts on a great show even if you're not into his type of music. So I figured I would catch his set while I waited for Phish. He sucks @ss IMO, just typical gangsta, ho, pimp, biatch crapola.
I understand that he probably appeals to people who like that kind of music. Funny though I sacrificed David Byrne for the Beasties and don't regret it a bit I thought The Beasties killed it.
The American Princes sucked too, not that they weren't a tight band they just make really crappy songs.
mgmt......god this was bad. i wasnt feeling it. yeasayer totally upstaged them. way more high energy, better crowd interaction, they were more humble. i loved it.
animal collective...........bored me to tears. im a huge fan, but was literally lulled into sleep. i woke up to my friend poking me and asking "is fireworks really still playing? it was playing as i was falling asleep, and i'm now woken up and fully rested."
girl talk............is one of my favorite people ever. i adore him.I didn't mind that he came out late, because he was so damn cute when he apologized for it.I wish i hadn't hated this show. I think he's become too popular to just invite everyone on stage to dance with him now, because all the pushing and shoving kills it for anyone else who just wants to have a good time. i found the girl talk crowd to be more aggressive than the NIN crowd. strange.
I think MGMT depended a lot on where you were...I was about in line with where andrew vanwyngarden was standing, about 10 people deep, and it was awesome but a little scary sometimes, people were falling/getting crushed. That worked out though because it thinned the crowd hahaha. The sound for me was excellent, it's even good on my crappy point-and-shoot camera's videos...but watching some of the other youtube videos of people further back, it definitely leaves something to be desired. I loved the zebra and multicolored circle lights, and the confetti was badass at the time too. I was basically sober by the time the crowd started handling the pushing (ie realizing they probably weren't going to die) and it was totally overwhelming for me, partly because I was overheated/drenched in water from someone's bottle/overtired/overcrowded plus I think my senses were just overloaded so it was pretty surreal. I just remember van wyngarden looking out at us a couple times and cracking up.
I also was in the pit for the Beastie Boys and can't even remark on the sound quality but the atmosphere was a GREAT TIME ahaha. The Cage the Elephant show on Sunday was hilarious.
Roo 2009 was the year of disappointments for me. Last year hardly any sets let me down. I guess I just went in this year expecting too much from everyone.
I think the crazy rain the first day, and the blistering hot sun the next 2 added to that.
NIN, most disappointing Animal Collective Bruce Springsteen Passion Pit Band of Horses

They started out as a punk band, then rap, then did some instrumentals for Check Yuor Head, then released a full instrumental album a few years back.
