Bruce was the worst period, I left for an hour of the show and came back and it still sucked
That is so weird. I am totally not diminishing your opinion but I thought that Bruce was absolutely bigger than life. He played every song I wanted him too and left me totally satiated.
It's funny how two different people can see the exact same show and come away with something completely different.
of Montreal needs to revamp their live show. Maybe start a new phase or era of their band. It's been the same thing for years. Having seen them before, I was yawning during their entire set.
Having never seen them before, I thought they were amazing. Band sounded tight, trippy visuals, a lot of energy. However, I could see it getting boring if they never change it up.
Yeah, same here. Had not seen them before Roo, and thoroughly enjoyed their show. They built up to a swirling psychedelic crescendo that still gives me goosebumps.
Animal Collective, by far. Awful. We were pretty far back so where we were sitting we were basically just getting bass which was like painfully loud and no melody/vocals/etc. at all. Just brief little blips of melody/vocals inbetween beats. It wasn't just boring, the sound was actually unpleasant to listen to. And I could tell by the crazy amounts of people walking away that I wasn't the only one who felt that way!
I wish I'd been closer for Springsteen - the sound for that show sucked too. Where we were it was like we could barely hear it enough to pick out what song he was playing. And we were in pretty much the same location for the Beastie Boys and the sound was fine then, so it wasn't just the location, just crappy sound systems and/or nobody checking on how it sounded.
Damn, it's weird how sound travels because I could hear Bruce clear as a bell in tent only.

I am not a Springsteen fan and I probably won't ever see him live again, but I thought he was pretty great. He's got a great band, great stage presence and doesn't short change his audience. It's not my thing, but then not everybody is into what I'm into either.
Roo 2009 was the year of disappointments for me. Last year hardly any sets let me down. I guess I just went in this year expecting too much from everyone.
I think the crazy rain the first day, and the blistering hot sun the next 2 added to that.
NIN, most disappointing Animal Collective Bruce Springsteen Passion Pit Band of Horses
I thought the weather was perfect. But I spent most of my time in the tents. I actually liked the rain on Thursday. I was a little worried about the campsite, but all was good when we returned to find some peeps from the northeast huddled under our ezup bc they rode a bus and couldn't bring one.

As could we! We left Bruce's show because the sound was awful, and it almost sounded better at our camp in Tent-only. Very weird.

I thought the Main Stage had amazing sound from every where. Sure, if you were further back it was not AS good, but still great, imho.
However, I thought the sound for the Beasties and Snoop was surprisingly not good, and I was not that far away. Oh well....
Amazing: Phish, Bruce, Amadou & Mariam, Vieux Farke Toure, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Wilco, NIN Good to great: Animal Collective, NIN, Jimmy Buffet, King Sunny Ade, Tobacco, MGMT, Passion Pit, Kraak & Smack Glad to have seen: Oakenfold, Grizzly Bear, Beastie Boys, of Montreal, Snoop Dogg
I was disappointed in Oakenfold's music, but was impressed that he spun till 6am.
of Montreal didn't impress me either, but I was lying outside on the grass, exhausted, behind the crowds.
Everyone seems to complain about the sound from the Which Stage, but to me that stage always sounded great, even when I was just strolling by in the distance (also, the What stage had fantastic sound). It's the 3 'smaller' stages that have the bad sound quality if you're not up close: the music sounds too boomy/muffled/forced, especially with bands that have a more delicate sound, i.e., Grizzly Bear and MGMT.

when i posted earlier that the friday phish show was disappointing i didnt mean to say that it was my most disappointing show. it was actually in my top 5. i had no phone or watch the whole weekend so i had no realy accurate concept of time. i was just waiting for them to take a set break and when they never did i thought it was just building up the epicness for another set idk. still a great show.
my most disappointing show was definately People Under the Stairs. they get tons of praise and i love their records so it was high on my anticipation list. i thought it was ok. some girl in front of me turned around and said, "i think this really sucks." she walked off and by the end of the show i agreed. someone said in another thread they had the audience wrapped around their finger, and i'd disagree. they seemed to be way more into it than they crowd was. basically it was just a typical hiphop show with no extra fire.

Girl Talk was really disappointing for me.. I really wasn't digging it. Maybe it was because we were pretty far out and not too close into the crowd, idk.
We left for Oakenfold's set which was amazing- we stayed until he finished, which was around 6 I think!!!
MGMT. Really thought they would've progressed as live performers after a solid but so-so Thursday night set in 2008. Poor stage presence, and one of the worst closing song choices I've ever heard in a show (a slow tempo, brand new song to end the night??). For a minute I thought they'd already turned the house music back on, and then I realized it was still MGMT...
Ya that last song was not that great. I Hate to be Cliche but just end it with one of your popular songs ya know.
i hate myself for feeling this way but MGMT was a huge let down, almost everything about it was dissapointing compared to theyre performance in 08. the stage, energy, and their outfits even (maybe theyre headed in a new direction?) but wtf is up with andrew having a perm? i mean seriously, what ever happened to this handsome boy?
I only had a chance to read through a few of these but a few that have been named I loved, like MGMT, Passion Pit & Band of Horses....I thought BOH was excellent! I didn't feel like they were low energy at all.
My biggest dissapointment was the Superjam....er, lack thereof. I would not count Bruce jamming with Phish for a few songs a "Superjam" SORRY!
I was actually dissapointed in Bon Iver's set but not b/c of him....it is just so hard to compete with louder bands when you have such mellow music and a soft voice. His set was being drowned out by something really loud and it made me sad. Bon Iver was in my top 4 must see bands this year.
One that surpassed my expectations was: BEN Harper & Relentless 7. I have been listening to this album for a while now and while I liked it I just didn't love it. WOW, though, just WOW! Live it was totally different. They were spectacular.

I disagree with that man i thought they did a good job getting people into it. You gotta remember a go portion of hip hop shows are terrible, and I am a huge hip hop fan, but most of the time they do not sound as good live because they can't mod there voices. I think people under the stairs did a good job sounding good and getting the crowd into it

oooooooOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHH nuts!@!
agree I did not like People either just another lame hip hop show IMO
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
My most disappointing set was Animal Collective. Not because of the band but because of the crowd. I think most of the people around me were expecting AC to be a dance party. It was really annoying because they were all complaining that not everything sounded like my girls. I'm really not surprised alot of you were disappointed by MGMT because they are a horrible live act.

This is the exact reason I enjoyed MURS and the Knux so much because I am usually turned off by hip hop shows (though I am a huge hip hop fan). They usually dont translate all that well onto a stage, however both these groups were great IMO I didnt stay for people under the stairs so I cant comment on them.
Need to amend my previous statement about Bruce being my favorite show of the weekend, but also disappointing because of the set heavy on the cheesy 80s shit. After a couple days to contemplate things, I realize he played The mo'fuck!ing River, Rosalita, Growin' Up, Thunder Road, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (awesomely random and perfect), Badlands, etc and I don't have the heart to call it a disappointment.
So - the only show I can really call a disappointment was Grizzly Bear, and only then because i was outside the tent and the sound wasn't great. I had seen them the week before at Berklee in Boston with impeccable acoustics so their Bonnaroo set was NEVER going to match it.
I was pissed i left NiN to check out that lack luster MGMT show. Their show in 08 killed that show. If that show was any indication of their future I'd say their next album won't be half as good as the first. Hope I'm wrong but I doubt I am
Bruce was the worst period, I left for an hour of the show and came back and it still sucked
No problem with the fact that you didn't like Bruce, people have different tastes. But it sounds like you weren't really "disappointed" with Bruce,as much as the fact that you didn't think you'd like the show and things turned out the way you expected them to.
If I'm mistaken, and the show really didn't meet your expectations, then I'd be curious what those expectations actually were.I didn't particularly want to hear songs directed to casual fans, like Glory Days,Dancing, and Sunny Day,but I understand why he went with them.
I wanted to hear Jungleland and Backstreets, and think both would have worked well in that setting.Because The Night was setlisted, and not played, and that was disappointing as well.
But I was right up against the ramp, and though I've seen Bruce multiple times,I've never quite seen him display the intensity and energy that he had on Sat night. The Boss was on display for nearly 3 hrs,so it's hard for me to imagine people being disappointed or feeling like he "mailed it in".Again I don't think that's your problem with the show, and it sounds like you're probably just not a Springsteen fan.
^ That is great to hear. I couldn't believe his energy. That was my first time, I probably won't go see Bruce again, but Saturday night was special. I wanted to hear Jungleland, I liked a lot of the songs I didn't know, but I have to say it was awesome to hear Dancing. That was the icing on the cake after a great show, and everyone in my group, including those who didn't much enjoy the rest of the show, was up and dancing animatedly during this song.
I'm so surprised to hear people say that Band of Horses stunk because they were low energy.... what did people expect? Even their "upbeat" songs are pretty mellow. I thought they were an ideal Sunday afternoon show, where I could sit on my blanket, enjoy the weather and get up and dance once or twice.
And I might have said it before, but any show in the Other Tent stunk unless you were physically under the tent. The sound didn't work right if you were on the hill. Ben Harper and The Knux were totally different experiences depending on where you were standing. Once I moved under the tent, they got MUCH better.
Funny how the crowd can impact the quality of the show, though.

^^^I kind of agree but I think your are overstating the difference. I hung back, not even on the hill but on the field to the left by the trees, for DGQ, and it sounded awesome. Couldn't necessarily hear every minute detail, but I really didn't think it was bad at all.
You wanna talk about bad sound/acoustics, let's talk Which Stage.
