On the Edwin Starr track, according to his official website, he 'got off to a good start with "I Am The Man For You Baby", but it was with "25 Miles" in 1969 that things really took off'. These were two times he had success before "War" was released in 1970.
Let's say Edwin Hatcher "Hatched" his "starrdom" with his single war. I don't know if this single was 2 before that (because I can't find a good source but it fits with a hint), but he also had a single in 74 called "Who's Right or Wrong"
Writer or Wronger = Who's Right or Wrong
So is The Who right or wrong?
Of course that could have just been help to point to Edwin also
It was that line of reasoning that led you to the Carpenters thing, but he was referring to this post, not the Carpenters post.

You are right my apologies. I always miss those numbers in the tweets. Did the same thing yesterday. So it may not do with the Carpenters at all.

Hey kids, plug into the faithless Maybe they're blinded But Bennie makes them ageless We shall survive, let us take ourselves along Where we fight our parents out in the streets TO FIND WHO'S RIGHT AND WHO'S WRONG
Say, Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet But they're so spaced out, B-b-b-bennie and the Jets
Elton John? Has this been mentioned?
Edit: Nope, count him out, he's in eastern europe during the Roo.

One of Edwin Starr's earlier hits was called "Headline News" a reference to a later clue. Ugh spinning in circles... I hope the DJ that gave this isn't the "Who" we are looking for and meaning she was wrong as in this is not a real clue.
THe problem is the "Before"...."Before the star was hatched is what is two times before I was."
Before June 10, 1970? (its release date) Jun 9?
Starr's release prior to his release of "War"? -> "Time"
Starr's previous top 10 hit before War? --> "Twenty Five Miles" --> is there something 12.5 or 50 miles before ...something?
Before War became #1? (August/September 1970) 3rd Isle of Wight Festival started August 1970 -- this was the 3rd time it was held >> it was held 2 times before this time. Note: The Who performed Tommy at this festival.
If the 3rd Isle of Wight Festival is 2x before the cluegiver was hatched, then perhaps the cluegiver was hatched at the 5th Isle of Wight Festival. It was revived in 2002. So the 5th would be 2003.
There are a number of ways to reason your way in and around this festival and this clue...probably more than anyone would care to read.
The #1 song Before "War"? (Make it With you, by Bread) -->
Thats where I got the Carpenters because they were number 1 2 songs before War.
Right, but it doesn't say two times before the hatching. It says "before" he hatched.
I'm not arguing, i'm just trying to see if we can all get on the same page. I don't see how we would look two songs back.
X...--->...Then Hatching.....------>...Something that "IS" 2 X's....----> And THEN... "I was"
No?
I believe if you think of it that way it leaves it too open for problem. Before in that case could mean the beginning of time all the way up to the day before. IDK

I believe that is the dilemma of the clue. It's just dangling there with nothing to hang your hat on.

Another twist on it maybe? Before War "Hatched" Starr the song was recorded by the Temptations which I believe has been mentioned here before. Should we be looking at them at all?
Yeah, I spent HOURS researching every member of the Temptations, and couldn't make any sense of it. Might be worth another try.
This clue is making me crazy.
Ditto, it gives me a headache just reading it. If it just said, is what I was 2 times before, instead of is what is 2 times before I was it would make me happier. Hopefully Bonnaroo's version will be worded more easily when it comes out.

This could be it. Starr won a grammy for "War" in 1971. If we think of that grammy as his stardom hatching, we look to the 1972 Grammy awards. Carole King kicked total ass that year, winning five for Tapestry, which was the album that made her a star. She is touring this year. Because I really need to do something besides obsess on this clue, I am going with Carole King.
2/5- Papadosio 3/3- MUSE 3/12- John Mayer 3/19- The Werks 3/31- Passion Pit 4/18- Ben Folds 4/20- Against Me! 6/10- Bonnaroo 6/30- Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey
Sorry Viciouscricle, Ithink Carole King is booked during Roo.
"Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours" was a huge hit around the time of "War". Wonder is a BRAND of bread. anybody want to help me connect this with the clue?

Well somewhere along the way Starr recorded the same song as Stevie Wonder (or wrote it can't remember)
"I Want My Baby Back" as a point of interest this song was released a year earlier on Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" album where the credited composer was Harvey Fuqua. On Edwin Starr's version the song is credited to Norman Whifield, Eddie Kendricks and Cornelius Grant(1967)

Try to see it my way, Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong. While you see it your way There's a chance that we might fall apart before too long.
Chorus: We can work it out, We can work it out.
he also covered this in 1971 went to 13 on the charts
