Saw this elsewhere and thought it would make for an interesting thread over here. What are the albums that marked your musical development at the 5 year increments of your life?
Nick (20)
5 years old
Free Willy Soundtrack
First album I remember buying with my own money (well allowance money.) I don't remember much about this, except it had Michael Jackson on it, it was a cassette, and I sat up in my room when my babysitter was downstairs thinking she would think I was cool because I was listening to music in my room. I guess that hasn't really changed.
10 years old
Jimmy Eat World- Bleed American
This was the first album I ever listened to obsessively, and it's not too embarrassing, which is pretty good for a 10 year old. It's a pretty good power pop album, not that I knew what power pop was at the time.
15 years old
Kanye West- The College Dropout
I loved this album, and still do. I remember watching "Through the Wire" on mtv when they showed a little bit more videos than they do today (ah memories) and thinking "this guy is going to blow up." I found his mixtape on soulseek, with the different ending to jesus walks, and waited for this to come out. Once it came out, I just popped it in my cd player and didn't take it out for awhile. Great great album.
20
Interpol- Turn On The Bright Lights
Of course between 15-20, and especially 18-20, my music tastes really developed. I started going to a lot more shows, and actively going back and searching for albums I may have missed. I listened to a ton of great stuff this year, but if I had to pick one album that defined it, it would be this one. I listened to antics a lot a few years ago, but somehow never listened to their greatest album (I like all of them, even OLTA.) I enjoyed how cold it was, how it could fill a room when blasting on a stereo. The album is simply massive, and there's not a bad track on it. Maybe I'll look back on this choice later on as pretentious, or too dreary, but for now, it's simply one of my favorite albums of all time.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles In Time Soundtrack Gloria Estefan boyeeeeee.
10. (1997)
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom This one takes me back to road trips visiting grandparents in Arkansas. I pretty much wore this album out and I'm not ashamed in the least. I still listen to it from time to time.
15. (2002)
Pink Floyd - Animals Right when I started getting really into music, playing the guitar, etc. The first time I heard "Dogs", I was truly blown away. Probably the first time I was ever actually blown away by a piece of music. Remains my favorite album to date, and probably will never change.
20. (2007)
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds Thinking of a quintessential album for this one is pretty tough, because 15-20 was when my tastes really began to expand. I was devouring pretty much anything I could hear and going to a lot of shows. However, no matter how much new music I fell in love with, it always came back to the Beach Boys/Beatles. I was playing a ton of both of them, but Pet Sounds, to me, encompasses the whole period of listening.
Very cool idea. I wonder what I would put 2 years from now when my next round of 5 comes about....so far these years have been all about seeking out new music and my ears are really loving electronica.

this is about all i can remember from back then. i know i had this poster on my wall.
10 years old (1990)
my music taste was already starting to develop as all over the place, from classic rock, alternative rock, pop, rap, r&b and country. but i was absolutely in love with mariah.
15 years old (1995)
my favorite bands at this age were stp, pearl jam, aic, ratm, pantera, etc. but late that year i also started getting into hip hop.
20 years old (2000)
all wu-tang all the time
25 years old (2005)
by this point i was starting to discover a lot more new bands from internet. dredg was my favorite band for a few years.
30 years old (2010)
can't think of anything that has influenced me much lately, but i am still getting into all kinds of music. i will just go with radiohead since i didn't list them during the previous periods and they are pretty much my favorite band ever.
My musical tastes still basically consisted on whatever my sister listened to, but the Police struck me more than the rest of the stuff she brought home.
15
15 was just before I was really about to discover the rich treasure that music would reward me with in life. In the preceding years I had become a big fan of Pink Floyd and the Cure, but it was around 15 when I taped a copy of the White album from a friend. Over 1,000 listens later, I'm still hearing new things.
20
Like the above posters, my musical tastes really exploded between 15 and 20. At age 15, I didn't own a single jazz album. Around 17, I started to delve into the rich catalog of Miles Davis, and soon found myself obsessively exploring every little subgenre of jazz. Jazz Fusion, though, was what started it all for me, and in particular, this track.
25
Once I finally had the money to go to shows, I was out a few nights a week, seeing whatever band that was playing, regardless of how interested I was in their type of music, and that caused me to really grow. Having fallen in love with funk, discovering the music of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti changed the way I thought about rhythm and musical textures, and was a jumping off point that caused to me search out different musical ideas from every corner of the globe.
30
Between 25 and 30, I discovered record shows and started attending Bonnaroo, which expanded my taste even further. This caused me to both explore the deepest roots of music - seeking out rare recordings of country blues, dixieland and hawaiian slide guitar from the 20s - and to keep up with the latest albums and smaller bands playing the festival. Delta Spirit represents a cross between these two, a lesser known band reaching back to those folk, gospel and soul roots but creating music that is completely new.

I don't think I have the memory for this thread but I'll try.
5 Years Old-I don't remember listening to much music at this age. My family wasn't into music that I can remember.
10 Years Old- By this time I was listening to the Beastie Boys (licensed to ill) a lot then starting listening to Guns n Roses. I was obsessed with Axl and Slash for years.
15 years old-got into classic rock and gangsta rap
20 years old-I started listening to punk and attended the warped tour more times than I care to admit. Around this time I started getting into DMB heavily and then moved on to actual jam bands.
25 years old- My tastes branched out significantly. At this age, I would listen to anything except country.
30 years old-I now listen to everthing. Bonnaroo and Inforoo has led me to so many great artist that I never would have even heard of. Bluegrass has now become a big part of my life.
I don't remember the first cassette I ever bought but my first CD when I was in the 8th grade was Terminator X and the Valley of the Jeepbeats. I loved Public Enemy so much back in the day that I paid $15 for their DJ's solo record. I still have it.
A Thieve's Parade 2/24 Conspirator 2/26 Kevin Smith 3/11 Keller 3/17 Papadosio 3/18 JJ Grey 3/25 Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer 3/26 Toubab Krewe 3/27 O'Death 4/11 Budos Band 4/22 EOTO 4/28 Summer Camp 5/6-29 All Good

Ok I had to do mine a bit differently. I couldn't just pick one band or song for every year. So, after a couple days of thought I have my list, which consists of 10 albums or songs for every five year increment.
-5- I pretty much listened to whatever my mom listened to at this age. Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover- Sophie B. Hawkins All That She Wants- Ace Of Base (really that whole album) Red Red Wine- UB40 Jump- Criss Cross Livin On The Edge- Aerosmith That's The Way Love Goes- Janet Jackson Under The Bridge- Red Hot Chili Peppers I'm Too Sexy- Right Said Fred My Lovin (You're Never Gonna Get It)- En Vogue Achy Breaky Heart- Billy Ray Cyrus
-10- Embarrassingly enough... The Boy Is Mine- Brandy and Monica Hows It Gonna Be- Third Eye Blind You Make Me Wanna- Usher Tubthumping- Chumbawamba Everybody(Backstreets Back)- Backstreet Boys Never Ever- All Saints Ray of Light- Madonna Bittersweet Symphony- The Verve ( I still really like this song) Wannabe- Spice Girls Say You'll Be There- Spice Girls
-15- This was my punk kid phase Nirvana- Bleach (whole album) NOFX- I Heard They Suck Live (whole album) Sublime- Smoke 2 Joints Sublime- Caress Me Down Sublime- Sublime- 40 oz to Freedom Guttermouth- Gorgeous (whole album) NOFX- Pump Up the Valuum (whole album) Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Fever to Tell (whole album) A Perfect Circle- Mer De Noms (whole album) Tool- Sober, Prison Sex, Schism
-20- Deftones- Around The Fur (whole album) Butthole Surfers- Hurdy Gurdy Man Push Stars- Keg on My Coffin (RIP Jeremy Scott, best friend and one time love) Deftones- White Pony (whole album) Otep- Possession, Blood Pigs, Ghostflowers Nirvana- EVERYTHING THEY HAVE A Perfect Circle- Thirteenth Step (whole album) Bullet with Butterfly Wings- Smashing Pumpkins Jack Off Jill- Sexless Demons and Scars (whole album) Mars Volta- Televators (but also most of the De-Loused in the Comatorium album)
I still listen to a LOT of the bands listed, they just don't dominate anymore.
I'm 22 now and my tastes are still evolving. It seems I find a new favorite band every week. Also, I've gotten into a lot of classic rock in the past two years.
