What the live show?
I've never tried listening to one of their bootlegs to be honest, just seen them twice in the last two years which were both incredible shows. I can imagine it not holding up on tape.

Best: the two nights of Widespread at the first Roo. R.I.P. Mike The Big Wu at the first Roo because that started it all. MMJ Late Night 08 White Stripes 07 Gogol Bordello 08 The Flaming Lips 07
Worse: The Police 07 (it wasn't completely bad but there was no energy, just one big singalong) Tegan and Sara 08 (liked The Con album, hated the show)
We've discussed best sets to death, so I'll keep it to the worst:
- James Brown 2003 (might be the worst of all time) - The Dead 2003 - Bob Dylan 2004 - Trey Anastasio 2005 - Tom Petty 2006 - The Police 2007
Those are the ones that stand out the most for me as being complete garbage, though you could probably toss most WSP sets except for 2002 in there as well.
yeah I heard bad things about the James Brown show. Still hate I missed it though. I could at least say I saw James Brown.
Best Metallica '08 Robert Randolph and the Family Band '08 Deadmau5 '10 Jay-Z '10 Superjam- Les Claypool/Gogol Bordello '08 My Morning Jacket '08 LOTUS! '10 Tenacious D '10
Worst Kanye '08 The Entrance Band '10 (Awful band to open up Bonnaroo) Timo Maas '10 (didnt sit down and see him but was the only performer after all the main acts finished at 4 a.m on saturday, and talk about letting down a good spot. Boring, repetitive beats) Kings of Leon '10 (Really felt a better band should have taken the Friday primetime slot. But I respect 'Roo in for showing support in a hometown band.)
Another show that I just remembered and think could fall into an Honorable Mention catagory for being among the best shows I've seen is Robert Plant & Allison Krauss at 08. That was a marvelous set.
Agreed about Weezer having a terrible set. It was embarrasing watching him do jumping jacks up there, not even playing guitar for the entire time I watched. Sigh.

Best: PJ('08), MMJ('08), Portugal. The Man('09), Phish LN('09), Back Door Slam('08), The Mars Volta('09), David Byrne('09), Band of Horses('09), Les Claypool('10), Andrew Bird('09), Raconteurs('08), Ween('10), Amadou and Mariam('09), Toubab Krewe('09), MMW('10),
1. Pearl Jam - Beautiful Night, Great setlist, Great Energy; this concert made me a bonnaroo fan. 2. Stevie Wonder - Seemed like he cut the concert short, and he seemed upset about the bum mics, but otherwise an amazing show. 3. Gas Light Anthem - Never heard of them before, wandered up towards the front just before they came on. Loved the music, bought the cd, rocked that shit for 4 hours straight on the trip home. 4. John Fogerty - He may be old, but he still rocks out. He looked great, sounded great, and played very well too. 5. Jack Johnson - I know people around here dont care for him, but Sleep Through the Static was my favorite album in 2008, and getting to see him play at sunset, to ~40,000 was great 6. Metallica - Hard, loud, and against the grain; Excellent set list, great energy, and at the end of it, I got to say I saw Metallica 7. The National - This show made me a fan of this band 8. The Avett Brothers (2010) - They brought the rain. I didn't like their concert at the Roo nearly as much as when I saw them in Memphis, but they deserve to be mentioned just because it rained for 10 minutes during their concert. 9. Norah Jones - Watched this concert inadvertently. I was looking for shade, sat under the tree, and watched from afar, and really got into it.
Worst: DMB - They had their moments, but I was let down. ZBB - had to endure this to get a good spot for Dave, it sucked, but I only enjoyed dave slightly more, lol
Regret Missing the Most: 2008 My Morning Jacket, I didnt know who they were Sigur Ros, the same Plant and Krauss, had to leave because of my ankle
2010 Jay Z and GWAR - my feet were killing me and I was tired and cranky
FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011 - FACT: U2 in 2011
I actually like Jack Johnson, but I felt his set in 2008 was pretty lackluster. It wasn't really his fault entirely. I just don't think they should have had someone with such a small sound on such a big stage. It felt like it would have been better in a tent. I don't deny his drawing power, I just felt like it was really underwhelming for a headliner.
Best/Favorites: Dave + Friends (2004)- Makes the subsequent DMB shows at Roo its bitch. Ween (2004) David Byrne (2004) Praxis (2004) New Monsoon (2004)- first band I saw at Bonnaroo, and they did Pink Floyd's Fearless. I felt I was meant to be there. Patti Smith (2004) The Mars Volta (2005) Secret Machines (2005) Karl Denson's Tiny Universe (2005) Th' Legendary Shack Shakers (2005) Tool (2007) The Roots (2007) Girl Talk (2007) The National (2007) The Black Angels (2007) Pearl Jam (2008)- Probably my favorite Roo show ever. Metallica (2008) Robert Plant & Alison Krauss (2008) Phish (2009) Nine Inch Nails (2009) Al Green (2009) Jimmy Buffett (2009)- Perfect way to start Saturday at Roo. Potrugal. The Man (2009) Stevie Wonder (2010) Jay-Z (2010) Carolina Chocolate Drops (2010)
Worst/Disappointing: Widespread Panic (05, 07, 08)- I've tried, I really have. Dave Matthews Band (05, 10)- They've sucked at Bonnaroo. These should have been so much better. The Police (2007) Sigur Ros (2008)- Their drummer was sick, and the show suffered for it. I've seen better Sigur Ros shows so in that sense it was disappointing. I hope they come back and can play a better one. Beastie Boys (2009)- Should have went to Byrne. The Mars Volta (2009) Animal Collective (2009)

They weren't really "bad" per say but after Stewart Copeland had talked in interviews about "really jamming out our songs, mates" and then they just stand out there and run through everything it was very disappointing. I left after a few songs and got a good spot for The Flaming Lips and was greeted by a soundcheck of War Pigs while faced. A much better decision.
Were The Police really that bad live guys? I'm just asking, since I've actually been on a big Police kick of late.
My favorites of 2010, my first Bonnaroo, were LCD Soundsystem, Flaming Lips, Hov, Phoenix. Didn't see anything that I really hated.
I guess it depends on what you're looking for. From a set list stand point, it wasn't bad (as in, the songs they included).
I think their musicianship as a group was mediocore though. For me, I think it had a lot to do with Andy Summers playing. It was very "loose" (to the point it sounded sloppy). Things tightened up toward the end, but I was really dissapointed.
Go to www.thetradersden.org and look up the show (I'm pretty sure it's still posted there in FLAC format). If you can't find it there, I'm sure you can find an mp3 floating around somewhere.
That way you can judge for yourself...ping me via PM because I'm curious what you think from an outsiders perspective (plus, you're stating you're really into police so your review should tend favorable )

I've always been a really big Police fan, and their show in 2007 was flat out miserable. At one point, Sting looked out into the crowd and said "C'mon, where are the 80,000 of you?!". They were all heading for the Flaming Lips late night.
Haha, the people have spoken. That's what I needed to hear. Makes sense; thanks for the input, everybody. When you get several people to say they were excited about it and love the band and that it disappointed greatly...that's when you know the show sucked.
Thanks for the tip, Huzzah, I will definitely track down the show. In the meantime, I guess I'll just have to go listen to Synchronicity and Zenyatta Mondatta and marvel at what a mind-blowingly good drummer Copeland is on record.
They were such a phenomenal, creative band...on record.
They were such a phenomenal, creative band...on record.
They were probably pretty damn good live too...back in the late 70s.
They could have used another year of daily rehersal time before their Roo performance though.
PS - I just took a look at their wiki page to see what they are doing now, and their Roo performance was so bad that playing Roo in 2007 isn't even listed.

Really? I loved The xx show last year!
i dont know it could of been the amount of people that was there for such a small band. i thought it was gonna be smaller and more intimate. i guess it had nothing to do with their performance.
Best: MMJ '08 (lifechanging) Galactic '10 (so much fun, the crowd really was the cherry on top) Pearl Jam '08 (fabulous perfect) Neon Indian '10 (didn't know them really beforehand, 1st full sent of the fest, amazing) White Stripes '07 (so lovely) Worst: OAR '08 (sooo bad, so offkey, so boring) Gaslight Anthem '10 (was looking forward to them - sounded terrible & should not do "witty" banter between songs) Police '07 (BOOORING) Regina Spektor '07 (so bad I have had a hard time liking her since)
