i haven't had my own computer since college. i'm preparing to open an etsy shop for projects that i make (and just got my tax refund), so i feel like it's time to invest in something. i don't do anything too complicated on the computer, just browse the internet and use my cricut software. i want something reasonably priced that won't be busted within a couple of years. i know pretty much nothing about computers, so i need some recommendations.

Just make sure you get a SSD (Solid State Drive) for your hard drive, and not a conventional one. Everything will run faster, it's one of the best cheap ways to get a computer running fast.
Are you looking for a laptop or desktop? I don't really have any recs for what you should buy, just make sure it has a SSD.

i'm looking for a laptop. nothing very fancy, but something that won't be dead within two years like every other cheap laptop i've had.

That one does have a SSD for a hard drive, they advertise it as "flash memory", but if you look in the specs they'll say it's a SSD.
I know nothing about Macs, so can't help there.
I know when I bought my laptop (Windows), I opted for the least amount of RAM possible. Reason being, you can buy RAM for super cheap from sites like crucial.com, they'll even tell you exactly what kind you need based off your model. Installing extra RAM is extremely easy, I bet you have a friend that could help you, or you could YouTube it.
8GB of RAM would be plenty for you though, like the one you linked.
*Caveat, that was for a windows laptop, no idea if you can upgrade RAM like that in a Mac. I'd assume so, but no idea.

if you aren't married to apple, consider the Dell XPS 13. My wife has one and it's a beautiful piece of industrial design. I'd spring for at least 8 gigs of ram though, the linked model only has 4 gigs. You may be able to install ram yourself cheaper, depending on the model (this applies to any laptop). EDIT: if you want to go this route, just google the model and if you can install your own ram. i think some manufacturers solder ram to the motherboard so you can't upgrade it yourself.
Apple and the the XPS series are pretty much the top tier of laptops right now in the $800-$1000 range.
For general web browsing I recommend Chromebooks, because they are cheap, fast, and unfuckupable, but I'm not sure what Cricut is, sounds like something that requires a full OS.
I second Rothric's suggestion of an SSD, they are a no brainer at this point.

thanks. i've actually never owned a mac, just had friends who preferred them. for my cricut, i just use an online design software program that runs in a browser.

If you are going with A PC I would recommend ASUS. They are across the board the best bang for your buck laptops out there imo. Check out newegg.com and look for Asus laptops with an SSD, 8+ GB of ram, and and intel CPU (i3 good, i5better, i7 best). Something like this www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834234444

If it runs in a browser, it is possible a Chromebook could be right up your alley.
A Chromebook runs ChromeOS, which is a fancy way of saying your whole computer is just a Chrome Browser. Newer chromebooks, like the Samsung Chromebook Plus, can run certain android apps as well. Chromebooks have very little local storage, because they assume most of your activity will be done in the cloud, so if you need lots of local storage they won't work for you. They tend to boot up fast, and you can easily restore to factory settings with just a few clicks if anything does go wrong.
If you are interested, I'd first verify that your online design software will work properly with a chromebook. if it runs in a browser it probably will, but better to do a little research first.
Yesterday was my 3 year anniversary of being on these boards. It feels like it's been way longer than that. Even though I don't participate verbally very often, I appreciate the community you all provide for me here.

I have a 2011 basic model Apple MacBook Pro. I also have a 2014 gaming Asus laptop (that now that I don't game anymore, our 8 year old daughter uses it).
In the time I have personally used both, I liked both, but had a couple issues with my Asus. Wifi wasn't as good as my Apple, maybe it was just my particular model. I don't really remember what else. It is a good computer.
Anyway, the 5+ year old Mac is going strong. Slowing down some... if I open a ton of tabs the fan starts running harder, so I plan to get another next year with every bell and whistle. (Upgrade the processor/ram). I love the layout. I will say, a friend of mine told me when I got my first Apple I would hate it for 2 weeks. And I did. Tremendously. I had regret and wanted to throw it out a window. Now I can't ever imagine going back to Windows.
Consider me to be another vote for ASUS. I've had mine for six years now and it's still going strong, and I never turn it off. And absolutely go with a SSD, it makes a world of difference. Apple does make good computers and you're less likely to accidentally inundate them with viruses accidentally, but they're probably not worth the cost for what you're looking to do.

I am in the car with my girlfriend and we are heading to Pittsburgh. She's driving my car because I have a work conference call in 10 min.
I just discovered that she's a left lane sitter while driving on the turnpike. A bigger pet peeve I may not have.
I'm not sure what to do.
Oh man, that really is one of my biggest pet peeves too. For the rest of us out there, you have to tell her. Now how you do it is a different question!
And then you get the ones who speed up as you're attempting to pass them. Motherfucker, if you went faster I wouldn't have to pass you! Just let me pass you and then you may continue on your way!
Or on long highway drives when you see the same car pass you, then fall behind, then pass you, then fall behind...Do people not know about the cruise control?
It's amazing how much congestion one single driver can cause. People can be completely unaware of their surroundings, not realizing their actions affect others.

Lately I've been bothered by people slowing down directly beside me when I'm trying to change lanes. they are speeding up in my rear view mirror, I throw on my blinker thinking they will go right past, but they just slow down right beside me and travel at the same speed.

My current driving peeve involves where I live. It's a low traffic cul de sac. I have trouble turning on to it at times because people leaving will drive to the end in the middle of the road leaving barely enough room to fit in next to them. Of course, the most consistent owner of this drives an Expedition.
My biggest peeve when driving is when other people are on the road at the same time as me. I have places to go, do you really think I want to look at your fucking Volvo on the way? No, I do not.

I've had the wish of a world where I'm the only driver before. Then I imagine it would be like that scene in Vanilla Sky where Tom Cruise is driving through a motionless Times Square. What a boring life that would be.

In Indiana, you can get a ticket for riding too long in the left lane. Passing as quickly as possible is preferred. We've had a law on the books now for a year and a half.

My Grandpa once got a ticket in Texas for riding in the left lane too long. He was over 80 and drove really slow, though.

That's how it's supposed to be. The left lane is supposed to be for passing, not to stay there and go 80. But no one follows that anywhere.

We used to run those back when we were kids. The ultimate would be if two of our cars could set-up all 3 lanes on the Interstate. haha People would always get pissed off with set-ups. I won't do it now unless someone is discourteous toward me. Then I might get you.

Haha. You're like those dudes in Nocturnal Animals. Seriously, usually I'm in the fast lane or coming up on a turning lane when this happens. These people are usually old or scared and have slow reflex reactions or can't drive.
