Put me in the camp that is a little disappointed at the jam band selection in the lineup, but it also wouldn't really surprise me to see that at least somewhat addressed when the additions are made to the lineup. Overall, I'm very happy with the lineup and especially the apparently bluegrass tent and superjam.
Where the Quack are the jam bands? I love seeing acts like Paul McCartney where ill never see them anywhere else and it's a good time. But I need some jam to actually get me there. That's the whole reason I liked bonnaroo for what it is. This I'd officially the end of bonnaroo as a name in the jam scene.
This actually took loger than I expected. What was the over/under on "Wheres the Jam?" ?
First opportunity to post since the lineup dropped.
Best. Lineup. Ever.
There were a LOT of surprises, which I couldn't say last year, it made the announcement more fun. I also think they extended themselves a bit in terms of budget with ticket sales being down last year. I expect this year will actually sell out (last year was not a sell despite what was announced the day before the festival), glad I already have my ticket purchased

I'm dissapointed in the R. Kelly get he is forever shrowded in a weird controversy and he had radio hits but as a top 10 get i think they are riding the success of the D'Angelo surprise last year and thought it would be strong to get its biggest R and B artist since Al Green. R. Kelly will be a running joke at the festival. Tom Petty is a dissapointing book also. He is a easy get in the festival industry and already having Macca it breaks away from the one major classic headliner to two this year. We could have gotten a fresh classic act instead we repeat previous roo's classic acts. I enjoy Petty's music I just wish Roo would hold itself to the standard of being the biggest festival in the country and not resort to repeating classic acts so soon. The Who, AC DC, Fleetwood Mac, Prince, Roger Waters all great classic acts with major draws that could be fresh for Roo if possible to book why opt to repeat classic acts. I'm just surprised by the artists ranging from 10-20 spots its mostly indie and rap acts in past these bands weren't as highly billed or regarded.
Four Tet Pretty Lights Wolfgang Gartner A-Trak Paper Diamond Holy Ghost! AraabMUZIK
There's plenty of EDM.
And thats not counting that often EDM comprises a fair amount of the additions generally. Especially DJs. Hell....wasn't the entire Lunar stage and all the DJs a late addition in 2010?
I would love to see a Kristen Schaal standup in the comedy tent as well. I really can't wait for them to release the comedy lineup.
It sounds like she's no loger doing stand-up. She got her Comedy Central special pulled by her request after bombing and said that she "used to be a stand-up" on Comedy Bang! Bang!

To a certain degree I agree with ilovefestys. It's one thing to diversify and evolve over the years, which I think roo has done well. There are plenty of bands I would've never paid to see on their own that I've been lucky enough to catch at roo over the years. However, the fest was built on jambands being the main attraction. I know they have been moving away from that but this is almost insulting to people that have been going since the beginning. 1 quasi jamband not even in the top 30 is ridiculous.
I'm not saying that roo should go back to the jamband days of old but throw us a freakin bone here. One barely mid tier act shows they are giving a big Quack you to their roots. Moe hasn't been back since 09 and lotus played thursday the only time they came. Who's going to bring in the sunrise for us? We had umphreys last year, sts9 in '11, disco biscuits in '10, moe in '09.
I don't think asking for more than 1 jamband on a lineup with over 100 artists and jam being the roots of this festival is too much to ask.
If the settlers hadn't massacred the native population of North America I probably wouldn't be sitting here today, but it doesn't mean I think genocide is a wonderful idea.
Yet you're not coming out firmly against it either.
How do you figure?
Let's be clear: I am comparing Bonnaroo's early jam-band heavy days to the wholesale slaughter of North America's indigenous population by the settlers. And I am saying that both practices are obviously abhorrent, but have resulted in something that is by-and-large a good thing. Now that we've gotten to the promised land, I think we can all agree that we have no more need for senseless genocide nor tuneless noodle mongering jambands. Right?

I don't even know where to begin. What lineups have you been looking at where the "indie and rap acts" weren't "as highly billed or regarded?" And as much as I would love to kick Tom Petty's fat old ass out of there, if they splurge for McCartney they aren't affording the Who, Prince, Roger Waters.
And R. Kelly will SLAY this festival. Absolutely murder. It'll be one of the best shows Bonnaroo has seen in years, believe me. All the PBR&B Hipster idiots who stumble all over themselves to suddenly praise R&B with acts like Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Miguel, and even D'Angelo are going to see what the KING looks like.

Haha unbelievable lineup. I do hope, though, we have a jam band that will destroy one of those 2:30 to 6 am slots. Thought it would have been STS9 or Disco Biscuits... I was wrong. Am I missing something?

I would have been okay with the one or two top 30 bands being known as a jam band ala Trey Anastasio Band, Moe, String Cheese Incident, Les Claypool.... but this is really disappointing that there isn't one night where any jam band fan has an option. I am an all music lover and fan. I have been to all the Roo's so I'm dissapointed based on a historical fan appreciative standpoint. They need to adjust this with atleast one to two more jam band additions. I still love and appreciate the diversity the festival has gone but too much emphasis on indie and rap music has overshadowed some of roo's greatest moments were by a jam band in the past and we wont really have that option.
R. Kelly is NOT the king of R&B. He WILL kill it, but the king? No way, no how.
Of modern R&B? Who else could you possibly put up there?
By now qualifying your earlier post with "modern R&B," I suppose there's a fair argument to be made from album sales and concerts over the past say 20 years that he's the "modern king." But because we're talking (if I understand you right) about Rhythm and Blues...I mean don't even make me say his name.

Oh, come on now. You really think I'd put Kells up against folks like Otis, Marvin, James? No, but R. Kelly is a classic, and he's been absolutely CRUSHING the game since the mid-90's. There's nobody who can touch him.
The 2013 initial lineup makes up for Phish playing 2 shows in 2009??? Tell me more
Well, Phish is awful. Even though I enjoyed that festival very much, they're horrible. Taking the late-night spot of another artist sucked. The fact there is so little jam on this is a small make-good for such a grievous error as that.
so the lineup in 2013 is making up for the scheduling of 1 band in 2009?
I would submit Mary J. Blige and Prince in the discussion for what Jugs has termed "modern R&B."
I saw Stevie Wonder perform at Outside Lands and he's the reigning KING. Admittedly, though perhaps Stevie Wonder could be considered not "modern R&B;" doesn't matter, he's the king.
Edit: I'm not sure I want to remain on record pigeon holing Prince's sound(s) as R&B. I reserve judgment on this issue for a later date.
Every year people talk about how Bonnaroo doesn't book enough "relevant" bands...can anyone please point out to me which jam bands are even remotely relevant? I'm sorry jam fans don't have a lot to look forward to this year but for the rest of us this is a much needed break. I don't even want to count how many times WSP has been booked at Bonnaroo in the 6 times I have been since 2005 (like 8), I know Phish has played like 4 shows...all of those could have been replaced by someone that I would have actually liked to have seen.
I am guessing Ed Helms also performs in the comedy tent?
Maybe not. He's not much of a stand-up but it seems possible.
that doesn't mean much as daniel tosh is a pretty worthless stand-up and he's being billed like he's chris rock. he's not even very good at rehashing internet spam

Relevant to what? Having a cult following that will travel long distances and buy tickets to a festival just to see one specific band?

Phish has played 3 shows @ roo, WSP has played 5 since '05. You may hate Jam bands, but at least their fans can count
and if 'those could have been replaced by someone that i would have actually liked to have seen', maybe you should of 1. gone to a different festival 2. start your own festival
I wouldn't be surprised to see a combination OAR, Lotus, Black Crowes, STS9 or even Bisco in the additions.
This x1000
Lotus or STS9 would reaaaally be a cherry on top. I mean, I'm seeing Lotus next week but still. I'm not a huge fan of Furthur, WSP, or any of those guys but I love my electronic jams.
