Today, June 25, 2014, marks the 30th anniversary of Prince Rogers Nelson splashing his genius all over our faces with his breakout sixth studio album, Purple Rain. This thread is for those who wish to discuss its impact at the time of its release, and where it stands today after thirty years of change in the music world.
This thread is also for posting pictures of Prince:
Well I wasn't born when it came out so I can't discuss that part of it.
BUT how I discovered this album (and film) is a funny story I think.
My good friend Cory is obsessed with Prince. I knew a few of his singles and his impact but never actually listened. This was about 4 or so years ago now so I was about 24 and I told him I'd never seen Purple Rain and he wasn't having it. This conversation happens after I was, very arrogantly, taking shot after shot of tequila. It was my first time drinking Tequila and I figured I could handle it. Slow down they said, it sneaks up on you they said...but of course I didn't listen.
Afterwards we ate some corn and Cory put the movie on and BOOM my life was changed. The acting was awful and I laughed at all that but when the performances came on.....mannnnn
So I was pretty brain dead during the movie. The tequila hit hard and I was high as a stoned astronaut and Prince performed 'The Beautiful Ones' and raped my brain. From that moment on I was in love. Afterwards I probably passed out in the bathroom and ended up at a park somehow but that's not important to the story.
I got the Purple Rain album the next day and listened to it non stop for about a month. Amazing piece of work and I will def give it a spin again. PRINCE ROO 2015 PIT...I'M THERE!
This album lived in my Dad's vehicles for about two decades. It just always seemed to surface, with a couple of other zombie albums - Elvis Costello, Sting, and the Kinks all come to mind. Not sure I heard more than about half the LP until I started checking out Prince on my own about 10 years ago. It's understandable, as a track or two might have raised questions he wasn't down for...
For the longest time, it was my favorite Prince album, but in the last few years or so I've grown to love Dirty Mind and 1999 even more. That said, Purple Rain is still an all time pop classic and the title track is easily one of the finest rock ballads of all time, as well Let's Go Crazy one of the greatest album openers ever. I also go back and love the Purple Rain Live VHS which is one of my favorite concert documents, though I've never really liked the movie too much.
Have you ever thought about the fact that the classic song "When Doves Cry" has absolutely no bass?
Is that more crazy considering its success, or is that you just noticed the absence now?
I know its impossible for me to multitask when this song comes on. It grabs me and forces me to only focus on it, all the while pondering its sheer pop genius.
