You're just gonna have to go over 20. Needs some features. Slow Jamz, Birthday Song, Diamonds (remix), Kinda Like a Big Deal, Flight School, Alors on Danse, Get By, Make Her Say. I made a playlist of all his features, but I haven't updated it in a while.
Obviously none of us know your friends preferences like you do so I can't say oh they'll x instead of y. If you didn't want to go over 20 I'd take out New Slaves for Gold Digger, you have a lot of new Kanye but I feel like even casual Kanye fans enjoy Gold Digger. Also I agree with tЯist♡n, Heartless and Can't Tell Me Nothing should make their way on the list (but not at the expense of Flashing Lights).
I've got a friend who is well-listened and open minded musically and I sent him a link to "Champions", like hey have you heard the new Kanye track. He listened to it and dug it, then said he'd never really listened to Kanye West. I was like whaaaaaaat. Turns out he's avoided Kanye because of his public persona, which is pretty common I guess. I offered to make a playlist, and he said he would certainly listen to a "carefully curated" kanye playlist if I made one.
So knowing my friends preferences, I focused on Ye's more progressive later work, but with some hits/bangers thrown in there. I know the lack of earlier tracks will be upsetting to people. But if you have any comments on the playlist lets discuss:
1. On Sight 2. Cold 3. Runaway 4. Stronger 5. Waves 6. Mercy 7. Black Skinhead 8. Power 9. FML 10. New Slaves 11. Devil In A New Dress 12. Clique 13. Monster 14. Flashing Lights 15. Facts 16. All Of The Lights 17. Famous 18. Through the Wire 19. N--- in Paris 20. Ultralight Beam
I had to trim a ton of tracks I wanted to include, I really didn't want to go over 20. Even that is too high IMO, but I did the best I could. Some of these are just personal favorites, like while there are better Kanye songs than Clique, it has possibly my all time favorite Kanye verse.
I put a lot of thought into the order and am proud of the way the playlist flows. Some notably fun juxtapositions are Stronger > Waves, New Slaves > Devil In A New Dress, and All Of The Lights > Famous.
You know what your friend likes but I would take out all the Cruel Summer songs honestly. Also who hasn't heard Power and Niggas in Paris? I suggest Lost in The World, Diamonds From Sierra Leone, Roses, All Falls Down, Otis, and I'll stop there before I name his discography hahah

all great suggestions i will take into advisement, thanks all.
I want to keep it shorter is because I'm asking my friend to give this artist a shot, and I don't want to throw a million songs at him, even if it means leaving off some classics.
no chance in hell I take new slaves off. in fact i might remove Cold and just put New Slaves on there twice.
The Cruel Summer songs are a blindspot for me I'll admit. I think I dig them way more than most Ye fans. To The World was originally on the list but removed, and I really wanted to put New God Flow because it's incredible but I don't even remember if kanye is on that track.

I always would go to "Family Business" or some other tracks off of College Dropout to show someone that he's not a crazy, angry, arrogant dickhead like he presents himself in public. The touching songs about family and his mom and stuff tend to surprise people who haven't given him much of a deep listen besides the hits. Like...."Through the Wire" is a catchy song but when you explain the real life story and implore someone to listen to the lyrics and understand what was going on at the time it can really change the way you look at him.

Bless your face for including Devil In A New Dress.

He needs to start playing this live, and "All Falls Down" more frequently.
This is so fascinating. I tend to listen to his albums as a whole, so I'm pretty excited to listen to them as a collective, especially with the options to do things like mixing in TLOP with MBDTF songs together.
Bless your face for including Devil In A New Dress.
It's still one of the most stunning songs I've ever heard. sweet baby jesus it makes me crazy.
To respond to others who suggest including tracks like Roses to show that Kanye does have human feelings and is not a monster, my philosophy on this mix wasn't to try and humanize Kanye. It wasn't to say "look, he's a good dude deep down, so even though he says horrible things in certain lyrics and in public, you should look past that and recognize the greatness of the art".
Instead the idea was to force acceptance Kanye for who he is. As appalled as we might be that Kanye opens a track by referring to Taylor Swift as a bitch, claiming the credit for her fame, and in the same breath saying she wants to have sex with him, it doesn't change the fact that the portion of the track from a minute and fifty seconds to the end is the most beautiful and wonderful and flabbergasting piece of music released in 2016.
If you don't fully accept the reality of the Kanye as a megalomaniacal horror-punk rock and roll genius, I think it makes it harder to appreciate the beauty. I'm not saying you have to be OK with it, or be pleased with the things Kanye says, but if you let it bother you and wince at every offensive line than you are missing out on a rare thing, a true creative genius that has achieved the apex of popular appeal.
^^^not totally happy with how I explained my philosophy for the mix, but this is the third time I've written this post so i'm just gunna go with it.
having said all that I should probably put Roses on there.
and I did switch out Clique for Heartless, but that's the only change I've made.
Kanye's catalog is so deep. I just want a three or four hour Kanye West show split into two sets one day. Like a show where he performs everything, all of the MBDTF songs he never does live anymore, some of the awesome gems off of 808's & Heartbreak like Street Lights or Bad News, all of the feel good soulful songs off College Dropout and Late Registration, bring back some of the epic Yeezus songs like I Am A God or Hold My Liquor, hell he needs to do those features that we forgot about, I want him to perform American Boy dammit. Also how is I Wonder not in every setlist of his? Or better yet...how is Monster not in every setlist? I mean it's the perfect song for a live setting "Imma need to see your fucking hands at the concert" and it's such a fun song to rap along to.
1. On Sight 2. Cold 2. Runaway 3. Stronger 4. Waves 5. Mercy 6. Black Skinhead 7. Power 8. FML 9. New Slaves 10. Devil In A New Dress 11. Clique Heartless 12. Monster 13. Flashing Lights 14. Facts 15. All Of The Lights 16. Famous 17. Through the Wire 18. N--- in Paris 19. Roses 20. Ultralight Beam
After listening to the playlist several times, I removed Cold completely from the #2 slot, so now the playlist begins On Sight > Runaway. Added Roses to the 19 slot. Everyone is right, it belongs on this playlist.
As already mentioned, I replaced Clique with Heartless. So the only Cruel Summer track still on the playlist is Mercy.

Swift released a statement pointing out how she only approved the sex line but was never told the following line would be calling her a bitch and never heard the song before it was released. Said what Kim did was like character assassination.
