I'm so sad that I'm not going to have a new live CBB every couple of days to listen to. They have been fantastic all throughout. I especially loved Moynihan coming out as Batman and NOBODY being able to understand what the fuck he was saying.
PFT if one of my favorite entertainers and I didn't even realize he was doing a different character each night. I remember before the tour he posted a picture of his character wikipedia for the show and said he was doing some homework to revisit some folks he hasn't done in a while or something like that. So cool.
As someone who isn’t a comedy bang bang fan, this thread often looks like a different language to me
Totally understandable. You should give CBB and Hollywood Handbook another shot. Join us
I would honestly love to. I listen to podcasts 8hrs/day and I’ve enjoyed other earwolf shows (U2 guys/HDTGM) but CBB hasn’t clicked liked I had hoped. I’ve tried a few eps but any recommendations would be much appreciated!

For CBB I can definitely give you some episodes that I feel really hooked me. They are a bit older and the characters likely have been on multiple times since then but I will try to do some digging and see. The one that always stands out to me, if you haven't heard it already, is an episode with Patton Oswalt (as himself) and Andy Daly (who is ALWAYS fantastic on the show but in this episode is playing Dalton Wilcox who is a poet laureate of the west and happens to also hunt/kill supernatural creatures). It's a really old one but was a perfect episode in that Scott and Patton had a fun little chat early and then once the "character" comes in it goes insane and Patton is a great guest who "gets it" and just adds to the improv.
Hollywood Handbook is harder to get into and also one that is hard to recommend but I will maybe try.
For Comedy Bang Bang - almost any episode involving Paul F. Tompkins, Andy Daly, Lauren Lapkus, or Lily Sullivan are sure to be great. Also worth checking out the "Best Of" episodes that they release at the end of each year which have lengthy clips of the top voted episodes. If any of those make you laugh then seek out the full eps.

Oh man this is great. Thank you so much! I’m always looking for something new to pass the time at work and I’ve been wanting to get into CBB because they have so much content and I love everyone involved. I crushed out the U2/REM/TH/RHCP over the past couple of months and it’s one of my favorites. I’m thinking CBB will be better the second time around.
I listened to one episode of Hollywood handbook but only because I heard king gizz was going to be on to talk about their Coachella set. I ended up getting really frustrated because I had no context for the show and it wasn’t at all what I was listening for lol. Might try to give that one a second try

Handbook is super frustrating to just jump into. It really relies on you following the evolution of the show. Sean and Hayes are so funny but in an inside joke kind of way. Their characters are so good at annoying guests while also being self deprecating and insecure man children. It's so funny when they get called out by guests like Julie klausner, mitra jouhari, and others. Hard to get into though. I'd recommend going way to the beginning and listening to their first show "reality show show" which was more about them being more like themselves and discussing reality shows. They eventually evolved into the handbook personas and then transitioned to that show. It's so dumb but so funny
About halfway through the latest episode of The Big Picture. It's an 80s Comedy Movie Draft with Sean Fennessy, Amanda Dobbins, and Chris Ryan. I kind've felt at the beginning they were in rare form, and so far it is a super feverish energy throughout, absolutely hilarious.
Also had a realization, I've been listening to The Big Picture for a few years and I have an intense parasocial love for these three podcasters. They are so clever and so funny and clearly love giving each other shit.
So glad they started doing drafts, easily some of my favorite content from The Ringer. If you haven't listened to one of their drafts choose a year or topic that interests you and dive in, they are a lot of fun. Best to choose one with at least the core 3. Amanda especially is vitally important. Dob Mob 4 Life.
Wild stuff. I still think he had something to do with it but definitely didn’t feel like enough evidence to put him away. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
new gourley and rust season starts next friday, and the theme is yuppie horror. 9/30: fatal attraction - hbomax 10/7: pacific heights - pluto 10/14: sleeping with the enemy - hbomax 10/21: the hand that rocks the cradle 11/4: raising cain - vimeo 11/11: consenting adults - hoopla 11/18: sliver 11/25: fear - peacock

For those who love stories about human relationships, resolution and reconnection-Heavyweight's new season has started. I had a little pre-cry squirt out when I heard Jonathan Goldstein's voice at the start of the new episode, because I knew that I would end up in tears by the end. Did not disappoint.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
i randomly found the pittsburgh show a few days ago when looking at tickets for a different event, but big grande officially announced a mini tour. like with everything they do, i immediately gave them my money.
in parasocial relationship to podcasters news, kulap announced today that her and scott are expecting a baby girl via surrogate very soon!
Yeah, I'm weirdly happy about this. I know for years Scott has occasionally mentioned how they're trying or want kids or whatever but never getting too into it since it's obviously a sensitive topic, especially when having issues conceiving.
Then when he was teasing some big news for if Threedom comes back I saw comments on Reddit talking about how that plus Kulap mentioning something on a podcast led them to the speculation about a baby/surrogate.
Not knowing either of them in real life makes it feel weird to be so happy for them but I definitely am glad they'll be getting something they've wanted for a while. I always liked the stories of Scott and Kulap bringing their nieces/nephews or whoever to Disney and other trips. Scotty Auks will be a good parent......I think.

i'm really happy for them too, and definitely caught a tear listening to kulap talk about it. so many of my friends/family members struggled with fertility before eventually having kids and you can't help but be thrilled for someone when it finally happens.

lol I don't regularly listen to the Conan podcast (I keep meaning to start it up cuz I love Sona, Gourley, and Conan himself) but this clip is so fucking good.
Halfway through when he starts reading "true facts" about Jack I just absolutely lose it.
"Your father is a tractor. Your mother is a corn silo."

Wanted to follow up on my CBB conundrum. Again want to thank everyone for the suggestions. I think itrainmonkeys gave the suggestion of listening to the “best of” episodes and that really helped me grasp the show. While it’s not the first thing I throw on in the morning, it’s found a place firmly in my daily rotation. That being said, I think I figured out what my issue was.
I just dove in to “Scott hasnt seen” which is now probably my favorite show at the moment. The only issue I have is that I wish Sean would be himself instead of the Sprague character. It got me thinking and I realized that I’m more drawn to comedy when people are themselves instead of the characters they play. I prefer wedding singer Sandler more than waterboy Sandler, or trainwreck bill hader more than Stefon, ruxin more than kroll show characters, even Ben stiller in meet the parents more than Zoolander. Not saying I prefer these films or shows more, just the characters. Pretty sure that’s why I was having a hard time with CBB. Was excited to see Paul sheer on an episode but when he’s playing a character the whole time, it kinda took me out of it.
I’ve been enjoying the episodes a lot more as I’ve progressed through and definitely have a new appreciation for CBB but I’m guessing that’s why it was so difficult for me to initially dive in. It’s been a lot of fun going through old episodes and once I catch up I’ll be excited for new ones. Just felt like I needed to provide clarity as I’m a narcissistic poster and had to bring it back to me lol

While you may not like it that much because of your realization about characters and real people I think the holiday and anniversary episodes are fun because there's so many people in the room all doing their wild characters and things just get chaotic. So much energy and off mic laughter.
Any Andy Daly episode rocks. Any Paul f Tompkins do usually rocks. There are a few guests who just tend to always hit
Haven’t listened to CBB in a long time, but thought I’d share I got TWO catch phrase submissions read by Scott. One was, “If you can’t stand the heat, you shouldn’t have murdered so many cats Grandma!” and the other was “And I think to myself, what a wonderful World Wide Web.”
